00:00President Donald Trump has shown interest in a third term, despite it being unconstitutional.
00:05Now, are there any real paths for a third term for Trump?
00:11I would love to do it. I have my best numbers ever.
00:16That's the president speaking to reporters recently on Air Force One about running for a third term.
00:21And it's not the first time he's mentioned it.
00:24It will be the greatest honor of my life to serve not once, but twice or three times or four times.
00:32I say this, so many people want me to do it. I have never had requests so strong as that.
00:40The president's official merchandise website currently sells several pieces of Trump 2028 merch.
00:46During a recent meeting with congressional leaders, Trump also displayed Trump 2028 hats in the Oval Office.
00:52Meanwhile, Trump ally Steve Bannon made his thoughts on the matter clear.
00:58Well, he's going to get a third term. So Trump 28. Trump is going to be president in 28.
01:02And people just ought to get accommodated with that.
01:05At the appropriate time, we'll lay out what the plan is.
01:07But there's a plan and President Trump will be the president in 28.
01:10Despite that, the 22nd Amendment of the Constitution clearly lays out term limits.
01:16No person shall be elected to the office of the president more than twice, that amendment reads.
01:21Now, if Trump wants to get around that amendment, there are a few possibilities, but none of them are easy.
01:27The first option would be repealing the 22nd Amendment.
01:30But that would require an amount of political support from the House, Senate and state lawmakers that Trump allies just don't have.
01:38Another idea floated is Trump running for vice president, then having the sitting president resign.
01:43That's barred in the 12th Amendment, and Trump doesn't really like that idea anyway.
01:49Yeah, I wouldn't rule that out because it's too cute.
01:51I think the people wouldn't like that. It's too cute.
01:54It's not, it wouldn't be right.
01:55Then there's Trump becoming House Speaker, which doesn't necessarily need to be an elected official.
02:01The president and vice president could resign, and the House Speaker could become president.
02:05But that would most definitely be challenged in court.
02:09Current House Speaker Mike Johnson, who's also a constitutional lawyer, has thrown some cold water on the plan, saying he doesn't see a path.
02:16But I think the president knows, and he and I have talked about, the constrictions of the Constitution, as much as so many American people lament that.
02:25Johnson also noted amending the Constitution could take around 10 years.
