00:00Dan Campbell says ref lied about NFL intervening to overturn TD after publicly denying league
00:06stepped in. It looked like the Lions had opened the scoring against the Chiefs after a trick
00:11play resulted in Jared Goff catching a touchdown pass. However, it was overturned due to an
00:16illegal procedure penalty. Dan Campbell has contradicted the referee, who claimed the
00:21league didn't direct officials to flag this controversial moment. Fans remain critical
00:26of officiating. There might eventually be a day when the NFL figures out a way to essentially
00:31remove the human element from the equation when it comes to officiating. Though a future without
00:37human error looms, we still face fallible officiating, like on Sunday night, where Detroit's 7-0
00:43touchdown lead was erased by an illegal motion penalty, possibly influenced by NFL intervention.
00:49The play saw Jared Goff move left before the snap to David Montgomery, who passed back.
00:55Goff scored, but officials flagged him for illegal motion. It took them a minute and a half as they
01:01determined he didn't pause after establishing as a back, nullifying the touchdown, and costing five
01:06yards. It's worth noting that the particular penalty is not something that can be looked at upon review,
01:12and after the game, referee Craig Rolstad said the flag was thrown after the officials huddled to
01:17discuss the mechanics, specifically noting, we did not have any assistance from Kansas City or New York.
01:23The claim that the NFL did not get involved was directly contradicted by Lions head coach Dan
01:29Campbell, and during a conversation with 97.1 the ticket on Wednesday, he curtly confirmed that an
01:36official informed him the crew got an assist from someone watching in the league office.
01:41In theory, it's good that the right call was ultimately made, and you could argue the four
01:46points the Lions sacrificed as a result of the TD being overturned were a moot point in their 30-17 loss to
01:53Kansas City. However, the NFL's lack of transparency on officiating decisions raises concerns, frustrating
01:59both Campbell and Lions fans with the situation's optics.
