00:22Even as a kid, I loved football because there was something special about joining the fight, taking charge, and motivating others to win, a J. McCarron, 35, said in a video announcing his run for office.
00:34When coach Nick Saban recruited me to play quarterback for the University of Alabama, he taught me the principles of being a leader.
00:41And together, we won back-to-back national championships.
00:45And playing in the NFL reinforced the importance of achieving goals bigger than ourselves.
00:49My roots run deep in Alabama.
00:53And with my football career behind me, Catherine and I are raising our boys here, instilling in them our deep Christian faith and teaching them the fundamental morals that make this state so special.
01:05But today, Alabama's conservative and cultural values are under attack from every direction.
01:13That's why Charlie Kirk's assassination affected so many of us so deeply.
01:17His example convinced me to get off of the sidelines, get into the game, and stand tall for our conservative beliefs.
01:25So today, I'm announcing my candidacy for Lieutenant Governor of Alabama.
01:30Jay McCarron's wife, Catherine Webb McCarron, is arguably more well-known in Alabama and nationwide than he is.
01:37As a semi-finalist in the Miss Georgia USA 2008 pageant and winner of the Miss Alabama USA 2012 pageant, she gained national fame during the 2013 BCS National Championship game when announcer Brent Musburger spotlighted her.
01:54This recognition led to her appearance in the 2013 Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.
01:59McCarron played for the University of Alabama from 2010 to 2013, securing two national championships with the Crimson Tide.
02:09In the NFL picked by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2014, he had stints with several teams including the Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans before excelling in the XFL.
02:20He passed for 1,179 yards in nine NFL seasons, earning $16.5 million.
