00:00Surprise! NFL coordinator emerges at top candidate for Penn State job after James Franklin firing.
00:07The Penn State Nittany Lions stunned the college football world over the weekend
00:11when they fired head coach James Franklin on the back of a 13-win season.
00:16However, for those paying attention, the move had been in the making for a long time.
00:22Franklin served 12 years as the Penn State head coach,
00:24and while he experienced success, he seemingly faltered in every big moment.
00:30In the wake of the firing, names such as Urban Meyer, Kurt Cignetti, Eli Drinkwitz,
00:36and former Penn State player Matt Rule have been tied to the job.
00:40But now a new name has emerged as the betting favorite, and it's not one you may have expected.
00:45For some reason, Rule began the search as the prohibitive favorite to wind up at Penn State.
00:50He went to State College High School, walked on to the Penn State team,
00:53and previously worked with Penn State athletic director Pat Kraft while the two were at Temple.
00:58However, Rule's hiring is far from a foregone conclusion,
01:02and another emerging coach with ties to the school has now moved to the top of the betting odds.
01:08Late Tuesday night, Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady became the betting favorite
01:12to become the next Penn State head coach, per BetOnline.
01:17Known as a top young offensive mind, Brady has deep ties to the program.
01:21He was a graduate assistant at Penn State in 2015-2016, and works for Buffalo Bills owner Terry Pagula.
01:29Those more familiar with Brady also know that he was the offensive coordinator for LSU's historic undefeated season in 2019.
01:37The Tigers averaged 48.8 points per game that season, leading Joe Burrow to win the Heisman Trophy.
01:43Though Brady leads the odds now, this doesn't guarantee his hire.
01:45It's an intriguing turn, given his NFL coaching potential.
