00:00Kash Patel's gift to New Zealand officials backfires.
00:03FBI Director Kash Patel's diplomatic goodwill gesture to New Zealand officials
00:08has backfired after the gifts he presented.
00:11Inoperable pistols mounted on display stands
00:13were deemed illegal under the country's strict gun laws and subsequently destroyed.
00:18During his July visit to Wellington, Patel,
00:21the most senior Trump administration official to travel to New Zealand so far,
00:25gifted three D-printed plastic replica pistols
00:28to at least five senior police and intelligence leaders.
00:31However, pistols are tightly controlled weapons under the nation's law,
00:35requiring a special permit beyond a standard firearm license.
00:39According to Police Commissioner Richard Chambers,
00:41gun regulators determined the pistols were potentially operable
00:44and ordered their destruction.
00:47To ensure compliance with firearms laws,
00:49I instructed police to retain and destroy them, Chambers said in a statement.
00:53Two senior elected officials,
00:55Police Minister Mark Mitchell and Defence Minister Judith Collins,
00:58who also oversees the country's intelligence agencies,
01:02said they had received similar gifts from Patel.
01:05A spokesperson for the spy agencies described the items as
01:08a challenge coin display stand
01:10that featured the 3D-printed inoperable weapon
01:13as part of the design.
01:15New Zealand has maintained some of the world's toughest firearm regulations
01:19since the 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings,
01:22in which a white supremacist gunman
01:24killed 51 Muslim worshippers
01:26using legally purchased semi-automatic rifles.
01:29While the pistols Patel presented were not of that type,
01:32the country's laws require individual permits for pistols
01:35and classify 3D-printed weapons as firearms.
01:38Thanks to everyone!
