00:10Yacht Issue
00:14The Yacht Issue was a series of postage stamps
00:17bearing the image of the German Kaiser's yacht,
00:20SMY Hohenzollern II,
00:23and they were used in all of Germany's overseas colonies.
00:27Millions of the stamps were produced,
00:29and they were the principal means of postage
00:31for all German imperial overseas possessions
00:34in the years 1900 to 1915.
00:38The German colonies were all acquired between 1884 and 1899.
00:43They belonged to the Universal Postal Union
00:46and used the same postage rates as the mainland German Empire.
00:50Initially, regular imperial stamps from the mainland were used,
00:54and only their cancellation marks would reveal their colonial usage.
01:00Later, the names of the individual colonies were printed over the regular stamps before sale.
01:06In 1900, a new stamp design was released for universal use in all of the colonies.
01:13Individual yacht issues were printed from master plates,
01:17which were blank in the scrolls surrounding the design.
01:20These key plate stamps could be engraved with names and prices as needed.
01:26Sometimes blank stamps were printed and stored,
01:30and the text would be overprinted later.
01:32On fully engraved plates, the text color matches the design color,
01:36while overprinted blanks have their text in rich black ink.
01:41The printing was done by the intaglio method,
01:44which required moistening the paper before printing.
01:47After the drawing process was complete,
01:49the irregular contraction of the paper would sometimes cause the finished stamps
01:54to have designs of slightly different size.
01:57Early printings were not watermarked, but from 1905 onwards,
02:02the classic lozenges watermark was applied to the back of the paper.
02:06Two separate designs of the yacht stamps were published.
02:09They were issued to each of the colonies in a standardized set of colors and denominations.
02:15The less expensive varieties, 30-20 pf and 1-2 marks,
02:21were printed in monotone shades of red, orange, green, indigo, and brown.
02:27The more expensive versions, 25-50 pf and 3-5 marks,
02:32were printed differently for aesthetic appeal.
02:35The same design had its ship and text printed with extra heavy black outlines,
02:40while the larger design was printed with contrasting colors like red and green.
