00:12This stamp was issued in late 1935 as a memorial to Queen Consort Astrid.

00:43Astrid of Sweden was Queen Consort of the Belgians as the spouse of King Leopold III.

00:50She was the mother of the future Grand Duchess Consort of Luxembourg,

00:55King Beaudoin I of Belgium and King Albert II of Belgium.

01:01Crown Prince Leopold of Belgium married Princess Astrid of Sweden in 1926.

01:25During August 1935, the young King Leopold III and Queen Astrid went on a private holiday to Switzerland.

01:34On August 29, 1935, the King and Queen decided to go for a last hike in the mountains before returning home to Belgium.

01:45The convertible they were driving went off the road, down a steep slope, and then slammed into some trees near a lake.

01:52Both the King and Queen were ejected from the car.

01:56The Queen's body collided with the trunk of a tree, and she died at the scene.

02:02The King was injured, but he later recovered from his injuries.

02:07The Queen was deeply mourned by her husband, by the Belgians, by the Swedes, and by the Swiss.

02:17In 1935, the Belgian postal authorities issued a postage stamp showing her portrait outlined in black, known as the Astrid Mourning Issue.
