00:00Jason, I know that you wrote episode one, so I have to ask about the cold open.
00:03Sure.
00:04It's so messed up. Why is the Music Man kind of the...
00:07I said, what is the one question we haven't asked yet that we...
00:09And we were thinking, oh, no one's asked about Music Man.
00:11So I started out as an actor on Broadway, like my co-showrunner Brad.
00:15I love musical theater. When we started talking about the opening,
00:18we actually initially entertained the idea of writing an original musical number,
00:21which quickly seemed like that was going to be a heavy lift.
00:25And we also... I think the other thing we realized was we wanted this to feel grounded in the period.
00:29And we also realized that opening... the song...
00:31Trouble. Trouble. Trouble. Trouble.
00:33...was a perfect opening to hear that over black before camera goes up on our opening scene.
00:38A really eerie repurposing of an otherwise happy musical theater number.
00:42Oh, we got trouble. Right here in our city.
00:45Trouble. Trouble. Trouble. Trouble. Trouble. Trouble. Trouble. Trouble. Trouble. Trouble. Trouble. Trouble. Trouble. Trouble.
00:51Maddie, is that you?
00:52We wanted to, you know, find that inciting it kill, that inciting it abduction.
00:58Obviously, the book, the movie begins with Georgie being taken.
01:01And so it felt appropriate to have Maddie Clements have our first It abduction.
01:06But we wanted to do it in a fresh way. We wanted to do it without Pennywise.
01:09We wanted to see another manifestation of It.
01:11And specifically a manifestation that took advantage of the fears of the time period.
01:15It's 1962. We're in the heart of the Cold War.
01:18Fears over nuclear radiation and fallout and mutation.
01:21And all those things combined into us coming up with the sequence that you see at the beginning of 101.
01:26Which really is the inciting incident of the entire season, right?
01:28Maddie Clements' abduction is what sets the rest of the story in motion.
01:31Wow.
01:32Okay, great.
01:33GoodWell .
01:34So, thank you.
01:36Good well...
01:41There, both.
