00:00So, you know, the 787 has been in service for a long time now, and I think it's been a very safe airplane.
00:09It's had some manufacturing challenges with joining body parts and such, but, you know, we really haven't seen many incidents in the fleet.
00:18And so I tend to think that that's not going to be the problem here.
00:23Is a Boeing 787 serviced at airline A different than at airline C or airline Q?
00:35Is there a difference service to service of the airlines?
00:41You're talking about maintenance service.
00:43The maintenance of the GE, the general electric engines, the maintenance of the system.
00:48For a grizzled pro like you, is it uniform worldwide?
00:54It's not, right?
00:55And so it comes back to training of those staffs on the ground that have to do, you know, sort of line maintenance on the airplane and training of people inside the, you know, the bigger engine overhaul shops that are maintaining aircraft.
01:13You know, we've looked at the fleet here of Air India, Boeing 787s, and there's not an airplane that's younger than two years.
01:22And the youngest one is a 787-9.
01:25So it's likely that the airplane that crashed today, and, you know, we hate to hear this kind of news, it's really likely that it's been in service for a couple of years.
01:35And so I would expect that the maintenance organization at Air India or some of their contractors have worked on it from time to time.
01:44George, when you see an aircraft like the 787, which is, again, a very sophisticated aircraft, crash right on takeoff, I mean, barely getting off the ground.
01:55Historically speaking, in past crashes, what have we learned on those types of situations?
01:59Yeah, I mean, usually it speaks to an engine problem, right?
02:06At takeoff, the engine is put under the most stress that it'll see during a flight.
02:11You know, the pilot pushes the throttles forward, maybe to the firewall, maybe not quite, but essentially he's getting the most power out of the engines he can get or she can get as they take off.
02:22The video I've seen was of a controlled descent into the neighborhood.
02:26Again, I hate to see that kind of footage, but the airplane looked to still be well in control.
02:33And so my sense is the pilot couldn't get the power out of the engines they needed to fly.
02:38And so, again, that's kind of pointing to a potential engine problem.
02:43What type of engines do we know were on this aircraft?
02:46Yeah, these are GE engines.
02:47They're GE, I think it's GE 9X on the 787.
02:54A very reliable engine from a very good engine manufacturer.
02:58And we're getting news across the Bloomberg terminal now.
03:00Bloomberg News reporting 204 bodies found at the India aircraft site.
03:05That's according to police.
03:06And, again, there were 242 souls on board here.
03:10George, how widely deployed is the 787?
03:12I mean, I love flying on them.
03:14I think they're great aircraft when I do go on a long flight.
03:17Are they pretty much all over the world at this point?
03:19Yeah, they're in fleets globally.
03:23Well over, I think, 1,000 now in service.
03:28There's two sort of competing airplanes in this, I'd call it, in this size.
03:32It's the A350-9 and the 787.
03:36787's outsold its A350 competitor.
03:40Both airplanes, great offerings.
03:43And really being sold a lot into global fleets around the world.
03:46They're of the size that you could put them into a lot more markets.
03:49And some of the bigger ones, like 777s.
03:52And so airlines love it.
03:53Okay.
03:54Let's do everything.
03:55Nice.
