Ivory Coast: preliminary election results point to another term for Ouattara

While the country awaits definitive results for the presidential elections, the electoral commission has announced first results that point to an overwhelming victory of current president Alassane Ouattara, who would thus start a fourth mandate aged 83.

00:00It comes as no surprise to the voters in Ivory Coast.
00:05First results for the presidential elections published by the Electoral Commission late on Sunday
00:09have pointed towards current President Alassane Ouattara staying in power.
00:14Ouattara, who is 83 years old, would start a fourth term as head of state if the results are confirmed.
00:22The Electoral Commission has been announcing results for each administrative district since Sunday evening
00:26and is expected to have a full picture with definitive numbers on Monday.
00:32Figures for voter participation are also preliminary for now, but estimations are oscillating around 50%.
00:38For experts, this low percentage is linked to the lack of opposition candidates.
00:44Four other politicians also ran for president, but no major opposition leader was allowed to participate in the race.
00:51This led to protests and tensions in the population in the months before the election.
00:56The casting of ballots itself happened without major incidents,
01:02although some clashes took place in around 2% of voting stations.
