00:00One of the top high school wide receivers in the country, Jameer Brown, from Huber Heights, Ohio,
00:04says he should be earning NIL money right now,
00:08and he's suing the Ohio High School Athletic Association to get paid.
00:15Brown's mother, Jasmine, filed the lawsuit on the sophomore's behalf on Wednesday.
00:20In response, the OHSAA could vote to change their NIL rules.
00:26The suit claims the state high school association's rules unlawfully suppress their economic liberties,
00:33freedom of expression, and restrains competition in the NIL marketplace.
00:38Brown claims an earning power of more than $100,000 per year,
00:42including significant non-monetary benefits like enhanced reputation and networking connections, according to the lawsuit.
00:50Ohio is one of six states that don't allow high school athletes to earn money from their name, image, or likeness.
00:58Brown, who plays at Wayne High School, is ranked number two on ESPN's top 300 recruits in the 2027 class.
01:05He told ESPN he wants the lawsuit to be a game-changer for other kids,
01:10hoping they'll have opportunities that players in other states already have.
01:14My family is getting by, but being able to use NIL would take some weight off my mom and me
01:21by helping cover things like tutoring, training, and travel,
01:24which helped me grow as both a student and a football player.
01:28Brown is verbally committed to attend Ohio State University as part of their 2027 class.
01:33His case could change the way young athletes search out opportunities in college,
01:38especially if they're being paid while in high school.
01:41NIL has already changed the way colleges recruit.
01:45Brown's future coach, Ryan Day, addressed that on Tuesday.
01:49Because I think now more than ever, evaluations are critical.
01:52Like, more than ever.
01:54It was important before, but if you brought somebody on your team in the past
01:57and maybe it didn't quite work, you know, they moved on.
02:01Well, now it's going to cost you a lot of money if you make a mistake.
02:03That's just the truth of it all.
02:05So I think evaluations are as important now as they've ever been.
02:09OHSAA Director of Media Relations Tim Stride told Straight Arrow News
02:13that the association has been working to prepare schools for a vote on NIL rules in the near future.
02:20They could decide whether to hold an emergency vote in the next few days.
02:24For Straight Arrow News, I'm Chris Francis.
