00:00We analyzed a decade of police data, and we've noticed a significant change in the type of crime reported in the ACT.
00:08Canberrans are reporting more assaults, offenses against people, and less property damage and home break-ins.
00:16Underreported crimes like sexual assault and domestic and family violence-related assault have climbed by almost 80 to 90 percent.
00:24But over the decade, crime has fallen as Canberra's population has risen.
00:30After 2014, burglaries reported in places like garages and sheds fell.
00:36But since 2022, reports have increased again.
00:41Reported home invasions have gradually fallen in the past decade, but break-ins at shops and businesses have remained about the same.
00:49Our analysis also shows some crimes concentrated in particular areas.
00:54The top five suburbs for motor vehicle theft have been Belconen, Braddon, Phillip, Fishwick, and the city center.
01:03Vehicle thefts peaked in 2021, but have since fallen to 2014 levels.
01:09Casual speeding fines make up the bulk of road offenses in the ACT.
01:15Other offenses like using a mobile phone while driving, since its introduction last year, has also begun featuring high on the list of offenses.
01:25What our figures show is that crime is changing, but it's not just up to the police to address this.
01:31Prevention services for offenders and support for victims is also a big part of this picture.
