00:16And first Poland, now Romania. Russian drones cross a new line, and NATO's not taking it lightly.
00:23The stories that matter, clear and credible, from across the country to around the world.
00:31These are your unbiased updates from Straight Arrow News.
00:37Good morning, I'm Craig DeGrelli. The investigation into the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk is zeroing in this morning, but so far, no clear motive.
00:47Authorities say 22-year-old Tyler Robinson remains uncooperative in custody.
00:51As law enforcement combs through his home and digital footprint.
00:55Utah Governor Spencer Cox confirmed on Sunday that the suspect's own family helped identify him and urged him to turn himself in.
01:04The suspect has not been cooperating so far, and so we're getting all of this information from family members, again, people around the suspect,
01:14and then the forensic information that we have, which is confirming everything and more than what we were able to share in that initial press conference.
01:22New witness video shows the moment chaos broke out at Utah Valley University when Kirk was gunned down during an outdoor debate last week, as thousands watched.
01:33Investigators say Robinson had become more political and made comments critical of Kirk, calling him full of hate.
01:40The governor said bullet casings were engraved with obscure online references, pointing to radicalization in the darker corners of the Internet.
01:49We're also learning more about his personal life.
01:51He does come from a conservative family, but his ideology was very different than his family, and so that's part of it.
02:00We do know that the roommate that we had originally talked about, we can confirm that that roommate is a boyfriend who is transitioning from male to female, so we know that piece.
02:13I will say that that person has been very cooperative.
02:17Meanwhile, in Manhattan, New York, mourners gathered for a vigil for Kirk last night, organized by the Republican Club, one of several events across the country.
02:26Supporters carried American flags, sang the national anthem, and vowed to carry on his legacy through activism.
02:33According to Fox News, Kirk's funeral will be this upcoming Sunday in Glendale, Arizona.
02:37Formal charges against Tyler Robinson are expected tomorrow.
02:41He remains held without bail in Utah.
02:44Related topic now.
02:45FBI Director Cash Patel is under fire over his handling of the Charlie Kirk assassination, and this week he will be on the hot seat before Congress.
02:54Patel is set to testify tomorrow and Wednesday before the Senate and House Judiciary Committees,
02:59where lawmakers are expected to press him on the Bureau's response to the Kirk shooting.
03:04Criticism began when Patel prematurely announced on social media that the subject was in custody,
03:10just hours after the assassination on Wednesday, an assertion that turned out to be false.
03:15According to NBC News, federal and local officials raised deeper concerns behind the scenes,
03:21including Patel's whereabouts the night of the shooting,
03:24and what one former official described as grandstanding in the hours after the arrest.
03:28Now questions are growing, not just about Patel's judgment,
03:32but whether he can be the steady hand the FBI needs as it faces internal turmoil and growing political pressure.
03:40New tensions in the Caribbean this morning as Venezuela accuses the United States of a hostile seizure.
03:47Venezuela's foreign minister claims Americans from a U.S. Navy destroyer illegally boarded a tuna fishing vessel
03:54with nine crewmen calling it a provocation.
03:57He displayed photos. You see it there?
03:59He claims they show U.S. sailors on the vessel and the USS Jason Dunham.
04:04But a U.S. official tells ABC News the boarding was part of a drug search based on a tip.
04:09A Coast Guard team embedded on the destroyer inspected the boat,
04:13found no contraband, and insists it only took minutes, not eight hours.
04:18The official also said the vessel was in international waters.
04:22The clash comes amid a string of incidents.
04:24Earlier this month, the Pentagon said Venezuelan fighter jets flew dangerously close to the same U.S. warship.
04:32And President Trump recently announced a strike on a drug boat from Venezuela
04:36killed 11 narco-terrorists from the gang Tren de Aragua.
04:41Caracas calls that a lie.
04:43In response, Venezuela is launching large-scale militia training.
04:47Video shows armed volunteers, some senior citizens, handling rifles, even heavy artillery.
04:54The country's defense minister says the exercises are about, quote,
04:58preparing to defend peace against any U.S. incursion.
05:02Nicolas Maduro is set to speak later today.
05:05Meantime, Reuters is reporting five U.S. F-35 stealth jets have landed in Puerto Rico,
05:11part of a deployment of 10 ordered by Donald Trump to target drug cartels.
05:15The Pentagon won't confirm details, but says no forced posture change is being announced.
05:22Romania is condemning what it calls irresponsible actions by Russia
05:26after a Russian drone violated its airspace during an attack on Ukraine.
05:31Romania and Poland, both NATO allies, scrambled fighter jets over the weekend,
05:36responding to waves of Russian drone and missile attacks.
05:39NATO has been reinforcing its defenses amid growing concern over repeated Russian incursions
05:45near allied borders.
05:47Poland says its airspace was not violated during Saturday's assault,
05:51but remains on high alert after shooting down Russian drones that did breach Polish territory last week.
05:58The Polish prime minister says their forces are now at the highest state of readiness.
06:03Meanwhile, President Trump is pressuring NATO allies, issuing an ultimatum on Saturday.
06:07The U.S. will impose major sanctions on Russia, he says, but only if NATO countries join in
06:13and stop buying Russian oil.
06:16Look, Europe is, they're my friends, but they're buying oil from Russia.
06:21So we can't be expected to be the only ones that are, you know, full bore.
06:26But Europe is buying oil from Russia.
06:29I don't want them to buy oil.
06:31And the sanctions that they're putting on are not tough enough.
06:35And I'm willing to do sanctions, but they're going to have to toughen up their sanctions commensurate with what I'm doing.
06:41President Trump departs on a state visit to the U.K. tomorrow.
06:45He'll be back at the end of the week.
06:47New York Governor Kathy Hochul is now throwing her support behind progressive Democratic Socialist
06:53Zoran Mamdani in the race for New York City mayor, saying she needs to know the next mayor won't, quote,
07:00surrender one inch to President Trump.
07:02In a New York Times op-ed, Hochul says her top concern is affordability and that Mamdani shares that priority.
07:10But she also made it clear police must have every resource they need to keep the streets and the subways safe.
07:17She also urged Mamdani to treat the fight against anti-Semitism as urgent.
07:23Hochul admits they don't agree on everything, but says he has the courage and optimism to lead the city.
07:29Right now, Mamdani is leading in the polls, ahead of former Governor Andrew Cuomo,
07:34current Mayor Eric Adams, and Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa.
07:38President Trump has taken notice, calling Mamdani a, quote,
07:42communist and radical left lunatic, and warning that if Mamdani wins,
07:47he will come calling to the federal government for money.
07:50Finally this morning, the 2025 Emmy Awards are in the books,
07:54and in at least one case, the record books.
07:57Seth Rogen's The Studio Cleaned Up, snagging 13 wins, including Best Comedy Series.
08:02That sets a new record for comedy and for a first-year show.
08:06Not bad for a freshman.
08:07On the drama side, The Pit took Best Drama and gave Noah Wiley his first-ever Emmy win,
08:14a full-circle moment after five nominations for ER back in the 1990s.
08:19Netflix's Adolescence also made noise, grabbing six trophies, including Best Limited Series.
08:25Its 15-year-old breakout star, Owen Cooper, became the youngest Emmy winner ever in a supporting role.
08:32And it was a bittersweet night for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
08:35Colbert, just months away from its CBS cancellation, Colbert finally won Outstanding Talk Series.
08:41He got a standing ovation, the crowd chanting his name, proof that sometimes the TV gods do love a good finale.
08:48I've got to admit, I didn't watch the Emmys last night.
08:50I was oversaturated by football this weekend.
08:53What does that mean?
08:54It means I watched college football late Saturday afternoon, Saturday night, went to church on Sunday,
09:00turned on the NFL when I came home, watched the Super Bowl rematch, and by 8 o'clock I was tapped out.
09:05Time to get ready for bed and Monday morning.
09:08There you go.
09:09All right, before we head out, here's what we're tracking today.
09:11Pope Leo XIV will lead a vigil this morning at St. Peter's Basilica, marking the Jubilee of Consolation.
09:17At noon, Venezuela's President Maduro is set to speak after accusing the United States of intercepting a Venezuelan tuna boat in the Caribbean.
09:27Also at noon, Vice President J.D. Vance will guest host Charlie Kirk's own podcast, live on the Rumble platform.
09:35And at 4, the President is expected to sign a new presidential memorandum.
09:39It's news without the junk calories.
