00:00Torpedo bats, injuries, Aaron Jojo and Pace for another historic year, an MVP award.
00:06The Yankees are 92 games into the season.
00:08They currently sit at 51-41, and they're two and a half games behind the Blue Jays
00:13for first place in the division.
00:15So, Greg Joyce, how would you grade the Yankees' season so far and why?
00:20Yeah, I'd probably give it around a B, B+, somewhere in that range.
00:24I think if, you know, coming out of spring training, if you told, you know, the Yankees
00:30that they'd be, you know, 10 games over .500 in July without, you know, getting a single inning
00:35from Garrett Cole or Luisil, and they'd have Clark Schmidt headed for Tommy John surgery
00:40to mid-year, I think generally you'd take that.
00:44Obviously, when you see it played out, it looks a little bit different.
00:47You know, the first two months of the season, it looked real sharp for the most part.
00:50We saw a lineup that was deep, deeper than last year.
00:55You know, guys were, a lot of guys were kind of playing beyond what they were expected to.
01:00Obviously, Aaron Judd was flirting with .400, putting together a pretty dominant first two
01:06months, and the pitching staff was, for the most part, kind of holding it together.
01:12You know, they had some key contributors like Ryan Yarbrough was pitching well.
01:16Will Warren had shown a lot of growth.
01:17Clark Schmidt had started to pitch deeper into games, was kind of taking that next step.
01:23But obviously, then the past month, you know, six weeks, it's kind of a different story.
01:29The offense has largely gone cold together, struggled with runners in scoring position.
01:34Some of their defensive miscues and mental errors that plagued them last season in October
01:40have kind of been popping up a little bit too often over the last few weeks.
01:43As they hit that kind of summer swoon, that June swoon that they had a lot, each of the
01:47last three years.
01:49So it's kind of been, you know, kind of a tale of two seasons so far, if you kind of break
01:55it up the first two months versus the last month and a half.
01:58But, you know, they've kind of, with all the injuries that they've had, they've kind of,
02:03you know, when you look at it, zoom out and look at it in the hole, they're in a decent
02:07spot right now.
02:08A couple games out of first place behind the Blue Jays, even though they lost that first
02:12place last week when they got swept by the Blue Jays.
02:15But, you know, they haven't totally damaged anything yet in terms of where they stand in
02:21the standings.
02:22Because I think the trade deadline will be key coming up here to see how they can kind
02:25of fortify the roster.
02:27Obviously, you know, the shopping list is a lengthy one at this point.
02:31I was, you know, Brian Cashman saying yesterday they needed a starter, you know, some bullpen
02:36help and an infielder.
02:38So it's a lot of pieces to acquire in one deadline that may not be overflowing with options.
02:43But, you know, I think by and large, when you, you know, I think, you know, the last
02:49couple of weeks, it has often seemed for, you know, the fan base, like the sky is falling.
02:55But, you know, it seemed like that last year, too, around this time, they were able to kind
02:58of right the ship later in the summer and kind of, you know, obviously reached a World Series.
03:03We'll see if they can do that this year.
03:04But, you know, they've kind of withstood some of the challenges so far.
03:08And if, you know, if they're able to snap out of this before long, they could be headed,
03:13you know, could be headed on the right track.
03:15Still a lot of baseball left.
03:17Greg Joyce, thanks, man.
