00:00Now, look what has actually happened.

00:03Since it started, 5th of August, 11,518 people came across in boats.

00:09You have returned 42.

00:12And we have given the French, proportionately in that period, £34 million.

00:19Now, not only...

00:21And by the way, we've added £100 million for this specific policy,

00:25but let's leave aside the £100 million.

00:28We are giving the French £800,000 for each person that has been returned.

00:35This policy is not a deterrent, and it's the most expensive deterrent known to man.

00:40Yeah, be fair, Trevor, it's also early days on the scheme,

00:43and that's not the grand sum of all of the deportations,

00:47and we're not just returning people to France.

00:49I'm not pretending for a moment that these aren't really serious challenges,

00:53and the public aren't fed up with people coming across in these boats, so are we.

00:57We know what the cause was and where this started, and that was, you know, a very bad decision

01:02to leave the Dublin Convention and everything else we lost when we left the European Union,

01:06but we are where we are.

01:07We've got to now deal with the world as it is, not as I would wish it to be.

01:11And we've got to go further in terms of the measures we're taking to deter people from coming over

01:16and to ensure effective returns. So I don't doubt the scale of the challenge.

01:20I don't doubt the scale of the public anger. We've got to give these schemes and initiatives time to bed in at work.

01:25I completely appreciate your honesty and your frankness.
