Bowie doubts Labour migrant plan will cut crossings

Shadow Scotland Secretary Andrew Bowie says he has “little to no confidence” Labour’s plans to tackle small boat crossings will work. Speaking after Yvette Cooper announced the first migrant returns to France will begin this month, he said the Government has “so far seen no dent” in crossings and must show real results before the next election. 00:00Of course, we want to see the action that the Home Secretary announced yesterday yield results.

00:06But so far, nothing that the Labour government have tried has actually seen any dent in the numbers of illegal crossings or people coming into this country illegally.

00:15They came into office promising to smash the gangs.

00:17The only thing they've smashed is the record for a number of people coming into the country.

00:20So we need to see action.

00:22I very much hope that these actions yield benefits, but I've got little to no confidence that it will do so.
