00:00:54I've been working at BuzzFeed basically since it began.
00:00:57And I've always been a little obsessed with celebrity.
00:01:00My whole childhood revolved around Britney Spears.
00:01:03When I was 14 years old, MTV came to my house because I was such a big Britney Spears fan.
00:01:09Personally, I think Britney is still a virgin.
00:01:13It's still my proudest moment of my entire life.
00:01:16So anyway, last year, I was sitting at this bar.
00:01:20I put my phone on the table.
00:01:21It gets swiped.
00:01:23So the next day, I go out and buy a new phone.
00:01:26Everything's totally normal with it for like a year,
00:01:29until these pictures start showing up on it.
00:01:31Pictures of fireworks, people riding motorcycles,
00:01:34tons of selfies, you know, about 40 selfies of a guy with an orange tree.
00:01:38An unfamiliar face in an unknown setting.
00:01:41That's exactly what Matt Stapira discovered while scrolling through his photo stream on his iPhone
00:01:46last month.
00:01:47And I was like, well, shit, I got hacked.
00:01:50Which is like an old person's thing to think.
00:01:52But a year after Matt lost his phone, he started noticing a bunch of photos
00:01:56on his new iPhone.
00:01:57Pictures that he had not taken.
00:01:59Like for example, this menu.
00:02:02And lots of storefronts.
00:02:04And I just remember being like, you know what?
00:02:06I should do a BuzzFeed post on this.
00:02:08That BuzzFeed story that Matt had written became a sensation in China.
00:02:16Apparently, everybody and their brother in China read the story
00:02:20and went on a hunt for the guy in front of the orange tree.
00:02:24I went to bed that night and everything has been different ever since.
00:02:30The Chinese internet found my story and someone in China had translated it
00:02:33and put it on Weibo, which is like the Chinese version of Twitter.
00:02:37Then they find out where my phone is.
00:02:39The fact that they were able to find one guy out of like 1.3 billion people
00:02:45in less than 24 hours is insane.
00:02:47It just completely blows my mind.
00:02:50The Chinese internet had given him the name Brother Orange
00:02:53because he took a ton of selfies in front of an orange tree.
00:02:57Brother Orange had bought my phone in China, but my iCloud was still connected to it.
00:03:01So whenever he took pictures on my old phone, they would show up on my new phone.
00:03:06First, I was like really freaked out.
00:03:07I was like, why are these pictures showing up on my phone?
00:03:09I never put two and two together that it was my stolen phone from over a year ago
00:03:14and that my iCloud was still connected.
00:03:17My phone is actually in China and my stolen iPhone is still alive.
00:03:22It was like something had come back from the dead.
00:03:26Someone like actually freaked me out again and was like,
00:03:28you have to like they could be accessing your information.
00:03:31And that's when I went to the Apple store and you know,
00:03:33did the kill switch on that phone.

00:03:37They made me a meme, which is hilarious.
00:03:40And one of the top comments I always get is come to China, come to China, come to China.
00:03:45I feel super lucky.
00:03:48I have an invitation to this part of China that no one's ever heard of.
00:03:52My phone literally ended up from this place and to southern China to Brother Orange.
00:03:59It's absolutely insane.
00:04:13It's always so awkward when someone like watches you take a selfie because it's the most embarrassing

00:04:20I have no idea what's going to happen or what it's going to be like in Brother Orange's town,
