Pompey boss John Mousinho shares his thoughts on the Blues' 'frustrating' home defeat at the hands of Stoke City at Fratton Park.
Transcript
00:00Here with Pompey boss John Massino. John, what are your emotions after that? Frustration? Disappointment perhaps?
00:08Yeah, one of the most frustrating ones I think of the season because of the nature of the game and the fact that I think we should have come away with three points.
00:17Ultimately, we got beat by the better side on Tuesday night and we can do that after a good point after King Power.
00:23But today, I thought we just left far too much out and we should have come away with at least a point if not all three.
00:29Was it a slightly disappointing first half as well?
00:33Yeah, it was just a really ordinary first half I thought. Without us being horrendous, I just don't think we ever got going.
00:39We didn't get going in the game. None of those were five minutes to go. I thought let's just get us to half time and regroup and go again from there.
00:46So yeah, we raced 45 minutes.
00:48But from there, then got yourself a real good foothold it felt.
00:51Yeah, straight away in the second half I thought we got on the front foot and we looked like a very positive side.
00:57We looked like we were going to create and we did create. And yeah, we just didn't put the ball in the back of the net.
01:01Would it be fair to say kind of a slightly sliding doors moment with Mackenzie's chance and then their goal a couple minutes later?
01:07I think so. But ultimately, if we do miss chances at the top end of the pitch, we have to make sure that it doesn't affect us.
01:12We have to make sure that we still keep a clean sheet. One of those games that you think, right, fine.
01:15If we're not going to put the ball in the back of the net, we come away after the first half where we probably could have conceded.
01:21We come away in the second half where we looked a lot more solid and we didn't concede any chances probably until we ran the goal down and we were chasing the game.
01:28And yeah, just to think it's one of those days and that was the disappointment of conceding the goal.
01:33Yeah. And then the response to adversity, I felt like it knocked the stuffing out slightly from there.
01:38Yeah, I thought the response was pretty poor. We didn't keep doing the things that have made us a good side in the second half.
01:45And yeah, I thought the decision making at that point was really poor.
01:48Yeah. I guess the irony is, you know, Josh Murphy comes on and that's the kind of meet and drink that Colby Bishop's been waiting a few weeks for.
01:54And he wasn't there on this occasion, unfortunately.
01:57Yeah. The positive really in that, I think, is the fact that Josh has come on, he's had such an impact.
02:03And yeah, we do look like a different side with him on the left wing.
02:06Yeah. How do you think Mackenzie did, all told, though, today?
02:09I thought he was really good. That's why we kept him on. I thought he was a constant threat.
02:12He was lucky not to have a couple of goals, really. And yeah, I thought for his full lead debut, I thought it was excellent.
02:19And a threat in behind as well?
02:21Yeah, I think a sort of different threat to necessarily what we've had so far this season.
02:26And yeah, he worked the shoulder really well. A couple of times, a couple of times got caught offside, but only one of those to come off to get top.
02:33And what was the thinking behind the sort of, you know, using Colby's end-deep, which you've done a couple of few times now?
02:38Yeah, I thought Mackenzie came on on Tuesday night. He did really well. He stretched the game really well, got his goal.
02:42And it was a case of getting a couple of goal scorers on the football pitch and, you know, working off each other
02:48and giving ourselves the best possible chance to stretch the game, but also playing between the lines a bit as well.
02:53And generally, you're thinking over the change, obviously, some in force as well.
02:56Yeah, just to freshen things up really, I thought we were, we've been tired over the past couple of games, rightly because of the output.
03:04And coming back here, early kick-off, I thought it was the right thing to do.
03:08And your thoughts on, particularly Hayden Matthews being favoured overnight today as well.
03:12Yeah, just one of those. I think Josh has had that introduction into the season where he hasn't had a full pre-season,
03:19playing three games in a week. Again, we didn't necessarily think it was the right thing to do,
03:23so Hayden to come in and freshen things up, we thought it was a good way to go.
03:27And obviously a disappointment for Hayden, obviously that own goal as well.
03:30Yeah, he'll be disappointed and, yeah, ultimately at that point, probably tiring and not able to, sort of,
03:35sort of, free out of the box.
03:37Obviously, the last 20-odd minutes for Josh Murphy as well, back in the fray.
03:41How much of a lift is that for the lads?
03:42Yeah, a massive lift. You know, you can see the difference that he makes to the straight side.
03:45Straight away.
03:46And, yeah, we need to make sure we build the market fit.
03:49What was he able to do today in terms of, was that probably what he did?
03:53That was about the max, yeah, about 25 minutes.
03:55So, where's he at now looking forward in terms of contributions, do you reckon?
03:58He's not, he's, you go from 25 probably to 45 at most, so, yeah, nowhere near being able to start.
04:05But again, as I say, though, immediately you can see what Josh Murphy brings and what Josh Murphy offers.
04:11Yeah, he's an exciting player. We don't have to sell that to anybody at Fatton Park.
04:15And, yeah, we've been really pleased to have him back.
04:18Yeah.
04:19Seggs?
04:20What's the latest on Seggs?
04:21Nothing, not too bad, considering what we thought.
04:23What might be the case here about four to six weeks for Seggs are much better.
04:26Prognosis to be here in the region of the theatre.
04:28Yeah, he was obviously desolate, didn't need you in the week.
04:30So, is that giving him a pick-me-up of sorts?
04:33Yeah, I mean, he was, he came into the training ground as pleased as you could be, I think,
04:37early morning, having got the results.
04:39So, yeah, bouncing around back to his usual self without quite physical activity.
04:44So, it's really hard.
04:45So, what is it?
04:46Is it?
04:47Yeah, just essentially.
04:48Turn his ankle later.
04:49And no need for surgery.
04:51No need for surgery.
04:52Okay.
04:53So, obviously, now just the responses, what's required, really?
04:56Yeah, we've got another tough week coming up next week with three games, two of them away
04:59from home.
05:00And, yeah, what we need to ensure is, obviously, positive performances and certainly when we come
05:04back here on that Tuesday night or that Wednesday night, sorry to be right at our home, yeah.
05:09Can you hear as it will take care of as if there isn't a thing, every one?
05:10No?
05:12Yeah.
05:13Can you hear?
05:14No.
05:15It's like a perfected movimiento.
05:16Definitely.
05:17fun.
05:18Yeah.
05:19Oh, my goodness.
05:20You guys haven't got everything.
05:22When're I?
05:23Nothing.
05:24I don't think, I guess...
05:25I don't think like one.
05:26I don't think, do role, but I know it and sometimes.
05:28I don't think it's like an actual sun!
05:29I don't think it's like your job wasn't going.
