00:00The knife-wielding terrorist who attacked a UK synagogue on Thursday has been identified as a 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian descent, officials announced.
00:11But who was Jihad al-Shami? Here's everything we know about the killer so far.
00:16Jihad al-Shami was killed by police after carrying out the rampage that left two people dead on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Manchester.
00:30Later that day, authorities said in a statement,
00:33We are now able to confirm that, although formal identification is yet to take place, we believe the person responsible for today's attacks is 35-year-old Jihad al-Shami, according to The Sun.
00:45Al-Shami was not previously known to anti-terrorism or police officials, the update revealed.
00:50As police probe his motives for the hate-filled attack, investigators will look at whether he's also to blame for menacing emails,
00:57a conservative politician, John Howell, received back in 2012, after he defended Israel's right to protect itself, the Times reported.
01:07One of the emails the politician received came from a Jihad al-Shami, spelled without a hyphen, who told him,
01:14It is people like you who deserve to die.
01:18It comes as British officials revealed they were surprised to learn his first name was Jihad, a term associated with radical Islam, while his surname translates into English as the Syrian.
01:28Al-Shami came to the UK as a young child and became a British citizen in 2006, authorities said.
01:36He lived in Prestwich, Manchester, and was described as a weightlifting enthusiast, oftentimes being spotted exercising and lifting weights outside, locals told the BBC.
01:46One local told the outlet he seemed to be a straightforward, ordinary lad.
01:52Neighbors also said he was known to alternate between wearing Western-style clothing and traditional Syrian attire.
01:59On Thursday morning, just after 9.30 a.m., Al-Shami plowed his car into pedestrians and stabbed a security guard outside the temple.
02:07The killer was spotted wearing what appeared to be a suicide vest when he tried to storm the synagogue, stabbing a window in an attempt to get inside.
02:16However, the explosive vest was later determined to be fake, police said.
02:21The investigation had since determined that one of the victims was killed by a bullet as police opened fire on the terrorist.
02:28Manchester residents Adrian Dalby, 53, and Melvin Kravitz, 66, were named as the two victims killed in the horrific attack.
