00:06Well, we shot this at the same time as movie one.
00:08So we spent a lifetime with Elphaba and Galinda.
00:10You've only seen their university years.
00:13Wait until they look back on their years
00:15and their fairytale that they've had shatters in front of them.
00:18That's when they become, like, warriors.
00:21And so I'm excited for people to get the full story of Wicked now.

00:25Wicked part one became such a pop culture phenomenon.
00:28Did you anticipate this reaction?
00:30I did not anticipate we'd be at Dancing with the Stars,
00:32having a Wicked night.
00:34That's insane.
00:35I mean, we know people love Wicked,
00:36but to see them fall in love with Elphaba and Galinda in this form,
00:39with Ariana and Cynthia to understand the power that they have,
00:42that's been the best.
00:43And to see my little girls and my little sons as well
00:46fall in love with the world of Oz when, you know,
00:49Wizard of Oz is so old and Wicked's been around for 20 years.
00:53That has been the best part of my whole life.
00:55They love what I do for a living now.
00:57It's great.
00:58I know. Dad is cool.

01:02And then the next movie, cool again.
01:03But I love the bond between Cynthia and Ariana.
01:05Yeah.
01:06We got a glimpse of what their sisterhood is really like
01:07during the press junkets they were doing.
01:09Can you share a core memory of filming with them
01:11that has really stuck with you?
01:12I love their rehearsals because that was, you know,
01:15the pressure's on.
01:16Everyone's expecting a lot from Glinda and Elphaba.
01:18They're so confident in what they do, but we were all scared
01:21because we're taking on such beloved properties.
01:25But we would sit on the floor of my office to rehearse.
01:28We wouldn't be standing up.
01:29They loved the floor.
01:30They had to feel the ground.
01:31Yeah.
01:32And so we'd be there and we'd talk about every line,
01:34everything.
01:35We'd try different versions.
01:36And working it out like that was really beautiful
01:38for us to find our way in to this Oz.
01:41That's incredible.
01:42What did cast bonding look like on this film
01:44with everyone behind the scenes?
01:45What were we doing?
01:46Dinners?
01:47Sleepovers?
01:48Well, one, it was like a kindergarten set all the time.
01:51I like that.
01:52Everyone was playing.
01:53I mean, Johnny and Ari together is insane.
01:55Then you throw Bowen in there and Cynthia.
01:57I love Bowen.
01:58I sometimes felt like I had to be a teacher.
02:01But that's the thing.
02:02The spirit of the movie had to be like that.
02:04And so we had to always play and they had to trust
02:06that I would protect them in the edits.
02:08And I think that comes out of it.
02:10So that was really fun.
02:11And the world is your oyster, John.
02:13What is a project you would love to spearhead next?
02:15What do we have our eye on?
02:16You know, I'm not ready to go there yet.
02:18I don't want Oz to end.
02:19I know.
02:20So I'm not ready.
02:21We just finished editing just like three weeks ago.
02:23So I'm processing.
02:25This is part of my processing.
02:26What do you do when you process?
02:27Edits are done.
02:28Is there a celebration you do?
02:29Is it getting together with the wife?
02:30How do you celebrate that?
02:31I spend time with my kids.
02:33I have five kids.
02:34Eight, six, four, two, and ten months old.
02:37I get to talk about the movie.
02:38It feels like I get to sort of exercise and release memories and things like that.
02:43And we get to spend a lot of time with the girls, you know, when we do press and stuff.
02:46And we get to sort of let it all go slowly but surely.
