00:01The United States has confirmed it is sending its most powerful aircraft carrier to the waters of Venezuela

00:09in what is seen as the latest military escalation in the region.

00:13The USS Gerald R. Ford, capable of carrying up to 90 aircraft, will be deployed to

00:20quote, detect, monitor and disrupt illicit actors and activities that pose a threat to the US, says the Pentagon.

00:28Hours before the announcement, the US said it had conducted its 10th strike on a suspected drug-running boat, leaving six people dead.

00:37Venezuela's President Nicolás Maduro has accused the US of quote, fabricating a new war,

00:43and there are fears that the US military buildup is aimed at removing him from power.

00:49Trump has accused Maduro of being the leader of a drug trafficking organization,

00:53and the US does not currently recognize him as Venezuela's legitimate leader.
