00:00ДИНАМИЧНАЯ МУЗЫКА
00:30Absolutely. I love Ant.
00:32I just need to see more from the rest of the team.
00:34Last year, they were in so many clutch situations.
00:37Ant had great numbers.
00:39Their team-wise, they didn't have the record to show.
00:43So I would love to see more from their support staff.
00:46Julius Randle had a great year last year.
00:48Julius Randle leading them in assists.
00:50It's probably an issue.
00:52They need to remedy that, but this will be a great game.
00:55They have depth issues.
00:56They just announced that Dante DiVincenzo is the point guard.
00:59So they're not sure what's left with Mike Conley.
01:01They don't think Dillingham's ready, obviously.
01:03So now they're playing Dante with six turnovers
01:05and is uncomfortable necessarily taking on that responsibility in game one.
01:09I mean, they've got some challenges ahead of them.
01:10They can't all be unamped.
01:12Dirk, I mean, there's really no hiding from it right now.
01:15The question for the Lakers is, what are they going to get out of DeAndre Ayton?
01:19So what do they need out of Ayton?
01:21Yeah, I mean, they need a rolling presence, clearly.
01:23Obviously, Luka plays so well with the vertical spacer.
01:27And, you know, he needs to roll.
01:28He needs to be above the rim.
01:29He needs to catch and finish.
01:31That also opens up all the shooting outside.
01:33The Ruiz, the Gabe Vincent.
01:35They need to, obviously, they need to get open shots.
01:37They're not really great at creating their own.
01:39And so Luka and Reeves need to create all the shots.
01:44Ayton's going to roll.
01:44He's going to finish at the back.
01:45He's going to catch the ball.
01:46He's going to duck in.
01:48So they need him to be a little more aggressive.
01:50And I think they're going to play off each other better, I think, from game to game.
01:54It's amazing what happens to a team when your big man rolls early.
01:59If you roll the first three, four, five possessions, it's not that many.
02:03Roll five possessions in a row and see what happens for everybody else.
02:06And then see what happens for you, the back end of the game.
02:09Exactly.
02:10Look, they're going to find ways to score with Luka.
02:12LeBron comes back.
02:13For me, the defense for the Lakers is going to be the Achilles heel.
02:16How do they defend?
02:17They have no natural defenders per se.
02:20I think they're going to have to defend by committee.
02:21Last year, I thought J.J. put them in a position to be in the gaps,
02:24keep people out of the paint.
02:25But then how mobile are they on the back line?
02:27How good are they reading and reacting?
02:28Runner shooters off, low man shifting over.
02:30That's going to be a big challenge for this Lakers roster.
02:33And also, I'm thinking about it.
02:34I'm looking at teams now playing without a point guard.
02:36We saw Houston play without a point guard.
02:37We see Minnesota possibly playing without a point guard.
02:39And I'm looking at you, one of the best point guards of all time.
02:41How do you see this working out for these teams
02:43in a different style of play right now
02:45with five guys being able to play the point and being positionless?
02:47Like this point guard by committee thing is difficult, okay?
02:50It sounds good.
02:51You've got guys that can handle some of it.
02:52But when they pick up your best player full court on the night,
02:54you don't want him handling the ball on the night.
02:56But then who's going to handle it?
02:57Other guys that are uncomfortable.
02:58So, I think we underestimate a little bit
03:00just how important it is to have someone just calm the table.
03:03Oh, really?
03:03Oh, really?
03:05We underestimate it.
03:07Some people say the point guard is the most important position.
03:10Thanks, Steve.
03:11Thanks.
03:11Yeah.
03:12After a quick break, it's time for tip-off Anthony Edwards
03:15and the Timberwolves against the Lakers.
03:17That's next.
03:18There's only one way to find this feeling
03:23when anything is possible.
03:28This feeling of the beginning.
03:31Boom!
03:35I gots to bring it to you cowards
03:37and it's better to be quick.
03:39Just electrified the crowd.
03:42Fire!
03:42Fire!
03:43Money!
03:44Yeah!
03:45Look out!
03:47Look out for one!
03:48Because in this league,
03:54at any moment,
03:57we can witness the beginning.
04:05It's a beautiful night in downtown Los Angeles.
04:09Welcome to the NBA on Prime.
04:11Presented by Wingstop.
04:13The Minnesota Timberwolves,
04:15a 49-win team a season ago.
04:17against the Los Angeles Lakers,
04:20who won 50 games for the first time in five years.
04:24And they've got a second-year coach,
04:25J.J. Redick,
04:27who's got this team ready to go.
04:28Although they lose opening night to the Warriors here by 10.
04:32The Timberwolves on Wednesday beat Portland by four.
04:35And the Timberwolves are led by the terrific young star in the making,
04:40Anthony Edwards, top 10 in scoring, top 10 in most metrics,
04:44doing everything now to his game that he wants.
04:47The long-range shooting we've seen.
04:50Now the mid-range game is in his sights.
04:53And as I sit next to Candace Parker and Dwayne Wade,
04:56let's talk about matchups to watch early in this one.
04:59Candace, between the Wolves and the Lakers.
05:01Well, you see the game the way you played it.
05:03And I'm looking at that matchup between Gobert and Aiden.
05:07Obviously, Gobert finding his way in the offense,
05:09understands how to play off of Anthony Edwards and J. McDaniels.
05:13Aiden finding that connectivity with Reeves and Luka.
05:16We'll see about this adjustment in this second game.
05:20I like that, Candace.
05:22I'm going to follow your lead.
05:23So as a guy who had the ball a lot,
05:24the top defender gets the excitement.
05:27So I'm going to go with J. McDaniels and Luka Dantas.
05:29I just talked about Luka.
05:31He did a great job of having 60% of his points in the paint.
05:34He's going to be on J. McDaniels and make sure
05:35that he's taking those long step-back shots,
05:38going to his left for a long threes,
05:40and not getting down the pancreas in the offense for a team.
05:43Our officials tonight,
05:44the crew chief is James Williams in his 16th year.
05:47The referee is Sean Corbin in his 31st.
05:50And our umpire, Tyler Ricks,
05:53in the replay center, Andy Nagy,
05:56Evan Scott, Robert Hussey,
05:58and here we go.
05:59The Timberwolves won by four Wednesday in Portland,
06:03shooting almost 50% right across the board.
06:06Hit their threes, just under 50% from the field,
06:09and they got it first with Edwards working on Vincent for a three.
06:15And it's saved by Austin Reeves,
06:17and out of bounds he goes with the ball.
06:19Minnesota's ball.
06:20Well, right away, I like the action that Minnesota came out in for Anthony Edwards.
06:25They did just give him the ball as they create something.
06:27They actually ran some things and misdirectioned and got him a good shot.
06:30There's a new starting point guard this season for the Timberwolves.
06:43Dante DiVincenzo.
06:44Mike Conley will come off the bench.
06:46And Gobert, who we just heard from with Allie,
06:49will feed to Don.
06:51And he puts it up and in.
06:52Dante gets the two on the floater.
06:54And Dante not having the greatest outing in game one,
06:58switching to that point guard position with Conley on the bench,
07:00but immediately Coach Finch gets him going downhill with a Rudy Gobert picker roll.
07:05Don't judge with that feisty defense of Dante DiVincenzo on him,
07:12and they're on top and three to fire with the fake and the three.
07:18And the rebound by Edwards.
07:20Quick outlet to McDaniels.
07:21Goes the other way.
07:22Luca in the way into the right for two.
07:25Jaden McDaniels going downhill.
07:26They're trying to get him in an open court more
07:28so he has more opportunities, Kansas.
07:29They want him more involved in his offense.
07:32We all do.
07:34Lakers.
07:36The other night shot 54% from the floor.
07:39It was a good night for Reeves, who put in 26.
07:42Fans right there.
07:43I think Anthony Edwards got hit in the eye as he goes the other way.
07:47And inside the paint, there's two, and it's put in.
07:51And McDaniels has now four on his first two of the game.
07:54First two shots are in.
07:55And Coach Finch talked before the game about
07:57Jaden McDaniels' emergence on the offensive end.
08:01We understand he's long, athletic, can he defend,
08:03but putting the ball in his hands more to start this season.
08:07DiVincenzo was defending Doncic, who was holding his hand, as you can see.
08:12Maybe it was just a quick jam,
08:13but it looks like it might even be a little bit more than that.
08:17Boom.
08:18Right here, McDaniels just taking it on.
08:20Lakers struggled early on against Golden State,
08:23keeping them out of transition.
08:24A lot of on-ball turnovers, which ignited their offense.
08:30Coach Finch talked about the trades last year that happened
08:33and how it kind of changed the team
08:35and how Jaden McDaniels, before the trades,
08:38was going to be more involved in the offense.
08:40But then the trades happened.
08:41They had to kind of get Julius Randle up to speed and everything.
08:44And so now, having a full year with this new team,
08:46you see the emphasis on Jaden McDaniels attacking,
08:50making sure that he not only is shooting spot of threes,
08:52but he's getting in the paint.
08:53And when you talk about that trade,
08:54and of course that was right before the season began last year,
08:58shocked the NBA,
08:59but it takes a team a while to adjust to that kind of a move.
09:03Well, it takes a team a while,
09:04and for them to adjust it in the same year,
09:07make it to back-to-back Western Conference Finals,
09:10I mean, I'd say that's an adjustment.
09:16Vincent is working on Edwards.
09:18Shot clock at three.
09:19Cross-court, even Junzo.
09:21Corner, McDaniels, three.
09:23And it's out of bounds.
09:24It's off the Lakers.
09:25Aiton was reaching in,
09:27trying to grab,
09:27and out of bounds,
09:28and Minnesota's ball.
09:30Here's Chris Finch, sixth year.
09:32He has been a part of these stair-step moves
09:35from the playoffs to two straight Western Conference Finals.
09:41And defense has been the mentality of Minnesota.
09:44They built it on that.
09:45They have the switchability
09:48that you understand it takes to win a championship in this league.
09:52Julius Randle with a three.
09:54Well, Anthony Ares, he draws so much attention,
09:56and he is very unselfish.
09:58And so, last game, we know he only had one assist.
10:00Coach talked about wanting to make sure
10:02that he has more opportunities to make sure his teammate didn't go out of a shot.
10:05Boncic putting it through.
10:08Five-time first-team All-NBA.
10:11The big trade last year.
10:12Randle going in.
10:13Contorts on Hachimura with a whistle and a foul.
10:18At the 9.28 mark,
10:20and Hachimura will pick up his first.
10:23And so much has been on the shoulders of Luka.
10:26Early on, Austin Reeves moving into a different role
10:29with LeBron James out.
10:32And it's going to be interesting who that number three person is
10:36that steps up and is able to be and contribute on the offensive end.
10:41You know, Candace, I like it for Luka.
10:43I know it's not ideal for LeBron,
10:45or I know it's not ideal for the Lakers that LeBron is not playing.
10:48But this gives Luka an opportunity to really put his identity on this team
10:52and allow all of us to see the way that he's going to play
10:55and how he's going to feel without LeBron being on the court with him.
10:58So I kind of like it early in the season for Luka.
11:00LeBron missing a season opener for the first time in his career,
11:05and this is his NBA record 23rd season in the league.
11:10He's 40.
11:11He'll be 41 in December.
11:13But last year's second NBA all-time player with this Laker team in his seventh year.
11:20And you see Gobert in that drop coverage.
11:28I don't know how much longer they're going to be able to stay in that
11:31because Luka, that is exactly what he wants to play against.
11:35Edwards the miss.
11:37Reeves the rebound.
11:38Here comes Reeves.
11:39He had 26 the other night.
11:41And good numbers last season.
11:42Dutch it's three.
11:44Rebound Randle.
11:46Minnesota would like to run more, he says.
11:48As Chris Finch told us, it's not necessarily in our DNA.
11:52But when we do run and are better in that kind of a transitional game,
11:57we were playing our best.
11:58Randle for a triple.
12:00Every time they get an opportunity,
12:02they're looking to pitch the ball up to Jaden McDaniels
12:04because they know outside of N, he's the best attacker in this lineup.
12:08And so they're looking to pitch it up to him
12:09to give him an opportunity to get some early offense.
12:13Reeves making a move.
12:16And Hashimura is wide open.
12:18Late close, three is down, and he's got his first basket.
12:21And that's a great sign for the Lakers.
12:23The ball touches paint with Reeves.
12:26Rui makes the T-Wolves pay.
12:28T-Vincenzo.
12:30He did not shoot all that well the other night,
12:32but he's off to a start here.
12:33Yeah, I think coming into the game,
12:35first game, been in a new role.
12:37Playing point guard, you know, there's a lot in your mind.
12:39Now he's able to get a little comfortable
12:41and just settle in and shoot the basketball the way he does.
12:43Dave Vinson with a three.
12:45And right there, Dave Vinson.
12:48Spreading the well from beyond the arc.
12:50Right now, actually, it's a shootout.
12:53He's here at Crypto.com Arena.
12:55Arizona from three the other night was 15 of 30,
13:01so they really were hitting, but the Lakers were not.
13:03They were 8 of 32 from three.
13:06They lost by 10.
13:08They missed 11 free throws in that game.
13:10It's a turnover right there.
13:12Even Genzo gets it up, and Edwards with flying shot.
13:14And what you can't do against this T-Wolves team
13:17is turn the ball over right there
13:19because they're going to make you pay.
13:21They have guys that love to live in transition.
13:24Eight-point lead for the Timberwolves.
13:27Winning their opener.
13:28Lakers lost their opener.
13:29We come back to L.A. after this on prime.
13:32Smith with the Cavs before spending the next four
13:35with our teammate Dwayne Wade in the Miami Heat
13:37and returning home, delivering on his promise,
13:39all before making a trek west,
13:41becoming a Los Angeles Laker.
13:42But for a career that's been primarily built on durability,
13:45Kevin, you mentioned it.
13:46For the first time in his NBA career,
13:48he begins it on the sidelines,
13:49dealing with what the team reported back on October 9th
13:52as sciatica.
13:53Now, the latest with LeBron is he's expected
13:55to be reevaluated in the coming weeks
13:57as he continues to be very patient
13:59with the controlled ramp-up program,
14:01which I'm sure, Dwayne, you can attest to
14:02is easier said than done
14:04as the last place he enjoys being is on the sidelines.
14:07But guys, I'm told LeBron is doing everything,
14:08both mentally and physically,
14:09to get back with his teammates as soon as possible.
14:12Having said that,
14:13as the team awaits his return,
14:15Luka Doncic, guys, has made it very clear
14:16it's all about that next-man-up mentality.
14:19Kevin?
14:19It is, and a good report, Allie,
14:21and thank you for the update.
14:22Doncic finding a room inside,
14:24carving for his ninth point of the night.
14:27And the Lakers finding ways to score.
14:29Minnesota coming out in that zone,
14:31and Luka not settling for the outside jump shot,
14:34getting to that nice bank shot.
14:35It's Edwards.
14:39Vincent there.
14:40Gobert with the screen.
14:42Trying to poke and drive and spin and fire on that 16-footer.
14:46That mid-range shot is what he worked all off-season on.
14:50You love to see it.
14:51It's a point of emphasis for him,
14:52and you can tell how much work he really put in,
14:54the confidence that he has.
14:56Just get to his spots.
14:57He's more athletic than most guys.
14:58He can shoot right over the top of him.
15:01Now they got Aiden over there,
15:03trying to defend Edwards.
15:04He packs up a three.
15:06He took the second most last season,
15:08and he made the second most threes in the NBA.
15:10Yes, and Anthony Edwards,
15:12that was calm, cool, and collected,
15:14stepping into that.
15:15If you're Aiden, you've got to get in his shot-making space.
15:18Oh, nice scoop inside, climbing for two.
15:20Reeves puts it up and in.
15:22Aiden was giving him a step.
15:24He didn't want him to blow by him.
15:25I mean, Anthony Edwards right here.
15:36Just get to his spot.
15:38You know, Gabe Benson is a shorter defender
15:39that's right under him.
15:41Just get over the top, and then here,
15:42he's playing him because he will blow by him.
15:44Just give him a little space,
15:45and this is what he practices on.
15:46He shot about 700 of those last year.
15:48That's target practice for him.
15:52Timeout taken by Minnesota.
15:54And the Lakers and the Timberwolves paddling here
16:02in game two for each in the NBN.
16:05Prime is brought to you by Wingstop.
16:07Big plays with even bigger flavor.
16:09Wingstop is here by CarMax.
16:12You want to drive?
16:14And by State Farm.
16:15Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.
16:18Gorgeous day in Southern California.
16:20There was a challenge as we were going to break.
16:22It was put on by Minnesota,
16:25and they won the challenge.
16:28Foul on Doncic.
16:29Ball was off the Lakers.
16:30Minnesota's ball.
16:31Chris Finch, six years, been there during the climb of this franchise.
16:39For 16 years of 17 seasons, they were not in the playoffs.
16:45They were losing his professional franchise in sports and all the major sports.
16:49But, boy, have they turned the corner with a couple of big acquisitions and getting their gem in Anthony Edwards.
16:54Well, once again, Chris Finch, he stood up in his chair a little bit when we were talking and asked him questions about what's important.
17:01And what he said is important that we talk about Anthony Edwards winning.
17:05He's been in the Western Conference Finals the last two years.
17:08He's only 24 years old.
17:09He's done a lot of winning at a young age.
17:11Randall will not get in.
17:12Gumple substitution.
17:13Now's Reed is in the game.
17:16Randall just put in his ninth.
17:18Doncic will bring it up.
17:19Reed's Marcus Smart is in the game.
17:22Aiton in the middle.
17:23He'll try to set a high screen.
17:25And Doncic will try to ply his way in.
17:28Rebound Minnesota.
17:30Reed.
17:31Randall.
17:32Reed.
17:32The pump.
17:33The drive.
17:34The floater.
17:35Inside.
17:35Reed's will control it.
17:39Lakers last year, the number three seed in the Western Conference.
17:41Reed's got his shot with a little bump and he gets the two.
17:45We saw what Reed's could do on the offensive end in that fourth quarter against Golden State.
17:50Scoring 13 of his points.
17:54So we, Lakers need Reed's to be aggressive.
17:57He would like to see him get to the paint for the Lakers to be successful tonight.
18:01Aiton had the rebound.
18:03Reed's the other way.
18:04Aiton's the D.
18:06Don't connect is in the game for the first time.
18:08Their top pick last year.
18:09Out of Tennessee with a spin.
18:11Reed is there.
18:12Luribia.
18:14Oh, he fouled it.
18:15With a move and out of bounds.
18:18Candace, one thing, Reed's did very well last game as well.
18:21Obviously, the fourth quarter, he had 14 points.
18:23But he had nine assists as well.
18:24So he did a great job of making sure he got in the paint and passed to his teammates.
18:28So him and Luka put an emphasis on making sure they touched the paint.
18:32So now we've seen all the new players.
18:34Dante DiVincenzo is out.
18:37They're going to bring in Conley, Minnesota, Will.
18:39For the Lakers, DeAndre Aiton, Marcus Smart, and Jake Laravia has come in for the first
18:44time with Reed to Laravia, who was actually drafted by Minasario as a three.
18:49And that's what he can do when he wanted more three-point shooting on this team.
18:53And they get it with him.
18:54And there were glimpses of great minutes Laravia played the other night against Golden State.
18:59Having somebody that can knock down the three and handle the ball, offload some of that ball-handling position for reason, Luka.
19:07Edwards with a three.
19:08He's 9-1.
19:09Rebound by Donchich.
19:11Luka had hip and groin issues the other night.
19:14He's kind of been favoring a hand tonight.
19:18They go inside.
19:19There's Aiton.
19:19But the defense was there.
19:21Terrific play, McDaniels.
19:23Randall.
19:24Look at him spin, feed, and look inside.
19:29Out of bounds and a thrown throw.
19:30And Randall thinking that he was throwing it to Rudy Gobert.
19:34As Reed was like, no, I need it a little bit lower.
19:37But we know Jake McDaniels is an elite defender.
19:40He just showed you why.
19:41I think DeAndre Aiton did exactly what everybody's been talking about.
19:45He rode to the rim fast.
19:46He pulsed up.
19:47He got it right in front of the basket.
19:49But Jake McDaniels is just elite at defense.
19:51Marcus Smart.
19:55He's only played 54 games the last couple years.
19:58Injuries.
19:59He's moved from team to team.
20:00Memphis to Washington.
20:01Got you.
20:01Got it.
20:05Terran Shannon has checked in for the Timberwolves.
20:09With Wade bringing it up.
20:11And here's Shannon, second-year player from Illinois.
20:14Came out strong last year.
20:15Trickey's inside and away from the block.
20:17And put back up and in by Jaden McDaniels.
20:19Kevin, what did you say he's standing from again?
20:22What did you say?
20:23Illinois?
20:24The Cox?
20:24Okay.
20:25I'll just.
20:26For Candid's and I purposes.
20:27We just want to know.
20:28Yeah.
20:29He's playing a little basketball.
20:31We do it.
20:31Let's all.
20:32Highly the bump.
20:33Touchage hits.
20:34Foul call.
20:35He's got 14 in the first quarter.
20:37And he is off to a terrific start.
20:40And we're accustomed to seeing Luka the Don operate in the mid-range.
20:45Right here.
20:45He does not back away from contact.
20:48He seeks it.
20:49And with that body, that frame, the amount of and ones that he generates.
20:54Because he's always under control.
20:57He plays off two feet.
20:58And he plays his style of basketball.
21:00And a slimmer body.
21:02A better fit.
21:03He's in shape.
21:03He's lost 31 pounds from last year.
21:06I love that in an interview with Dirk, that Dirk brought up men's health.
21:11I love that he brought up men's health.
21:13But Luka has done an amazing job of listening to the noise and going to the lab and making
21:17sure that he changes all the conversations.
21:19And D-Wade, what is the next step that Ant Edwards can take in his game?
21:36He's got the three.
21:37He's got the mid-range.
21:38He gets to the basket.
21:39It's getting easy points from the free throw line.
21:42Yes, we talk about it all the time.
21:44We were so happy with his eight free throws that he shot in game one.
21:46We want to see that eight to ten free throws a night just by putting your head down
21:51and making the defenders make the mistake.
21:54And then you get a chance to reap the benefits.
21:56And Ant Edwards has shown us the entire bag early in this season.
22:00It's Edwards on the miss.
22:01And he puts it up in him.
22:03And Doncic are going mano a mano.
22:0611 points for Edwards.
22:08And Doncic in the contest has put in 14 for L.A.
22:12Just as we thought.
22:14Their names were on the marquee at three.
22:16He's got it.
22:18A little miscommunication on that.
22:21Those miscommunications lead to target practice.
22:25Luka Doncic, just like he was shooting before the game in that coverage.
22:29He was shooting with the left hand before the game, by the way.
22:32Connect is watching Edwards.
22:35Vanderbilt is in.
22:36Gobert is shoved.
22:38Shannon will feed.
22:39Reid in the corner to Conley.
22:41Shot clock at three in the quarter.
22:42Rebound Conley.
22:43And then it's finally picked up by the former general world, Jerry Vanderbilt.
22:49In and healthy.
22:50And then he gives defense.
22:51Doncic will dance, fire, and he's getting fouled.
22:57He gives you a different move with every part of his body.
22:59Here's the difficult part right here.
23:05You got Ant Edwards.
23:06Passes up one to get that pretty two-point mid-range.
23:10But right here, drop coverage, a little confusion between the two bigs.
23:14Luka's going to give you a dose of everything.
23:16Guess what?
23:16He's going to have a counter for the dose.
23:19If you've got a counter for the counter, he just puts so much pressure on the defense.
23:24You cannot say he just goes left or he just goes right.
23:28You can't say that with Luka.
23:30Luka shows you everything.
23:31And like you said, even if you stop that, he has a counter for that.
23:35But you think about the greats in this league, Z-Ray, in the past and the present.
23:40They've always been able to play at their pace.
23:42Yes.
23:42And one thing, even from rookie year, when Doncic came into the league eight years ago,
23:47he always said he played at his own pace.
23:50Cannot speed him up.
23:51That's a chance for us.
23:54Nine points for L.A.
23:57With Edwards working on La Ravia.
24:00Lost it.
24:01He changed it.
24:02Feeds it.
24:05Reed, a three.
24:07Nice, Reed.
24:12The T-Wolves having a luxury of having seven guys from last season that made over 100 threes.
24:17This is not an on-knife for the T-Wolves.
24:20They can do this.
24:21Oh, he's feeling it.
24:22Tochich has been on automatic in this first quarter.
24:2721-4-3.
24:29What a display.
24:31Conley will put up a long shot.
24:33Rebound Shannon.
24:34Knocked away La Ravia.
24:35And it is off of L.A.
24:38It's Minnesota's ball.
24:39Everything the defense does is the wrong thing when it comes to Luka.
24:45They go under the screen, he's going to stop and pop and make you pay.
24:48You go over the screen, he's going to stop, have patience, let you run it to him, shot fake,
24:53and get to the free throw line.
24:54You can't do no right, you can do a lot of wrong.
24:57Hit him on top.
25:03Screen by Gobert.
25:05Switch with Vanderbilt.
25:06Three by Edwards.
25:07They cook it.
25:09They cook it.
25:1114.
25:14I love this.
25:15Pick them up, man.
25:16Love this.
25:16Let's go.
25:17We're in L.A.
25:18Through traffic, to the rack.
25:24It doesn't matter.
25:2723.
25:2823 for Doncic.
25:32That old saying, anything you can do, I can do better.
25:36Shannon, the pump it, and the fee.
25:39Rebound collected by Luka, who is exhausted.
25:42I don't blame him.
25:43As he should be.
25:4423 points.
25:45I bet you if he get the ball, he won't be exhausted, though.
25:48Watch how that ball gives you energy.
25:49Look, watch his energy.
25:50Here it goes.
25:51Over Reed, partially deflected, couldn't rise high enough.
25:55Shannon will drive.
25:56Euro step and feed with Alyssa.
25:58And a foul.
26:00It's on Austin Reeves.
26:04Reeves will pick it up.
26:07Number one.
26:09Right here, you got Ant Edwards dancing on him from beyond the arc.
26:14In the words of Dick Battelle, anything you can do, I can do better.
26:19Well, I don't know, man.
26:21We're going back and forth.
26:22This is great.
26:23Seeing all-stars go at it.
26:25All-NBA selections.
26:28Aiton back in.
26:30Arabia out.
26:32Connect will be on the ball.
26:34Reeves remains.
26:35Vanderbilt on the floor for defense.
26:37Keeping an eye on that hand, that thumb, that wrist.
26:41Shannon.
26:43Reed.
26:45And Reeves.
26:50There's the difference of four seconds.
26:52Game clock and shot clock.
26:53Minnesota with a foul to give.
26:55Lakers had a foul to give earlier on.
26:58Aiton that high screen.
26:59Reeves will work on Conley.
27:01Chased by the hustling Shannon.
27:05Vanderbilt right there, and he steals it for L.A.
27:08Marcus Smart has it.
27:10New possession.
27:11Final seconds.
27:12Reeves to the hole.
27:13No.
27:14Defended well.
27:15Got a hand on it.
27:16One second left and out of bounds.
27:19There's Rudy Gobert coming over to protect the rim.
27:23The rim, but extra effort by Jared Vanderbilt, doing a great job on the defensive end, getting
27:29extra possessions for the Lakers.
27:32One second.
27:34Smart to inbound.
27:35Plenty of time.
27:36Reeves three.
27:37Good if it goes.
27:38And the quarter has come to a close.
27:41Donchich had the last 14 Laker points.
27:46Edwards put in 14 for Minnesota.
27:50Luka put in 23.
27:51These two All-Stars, these two All-NBA players, going head-to-head, eye-to-eye.
27:58This is the NBA on Prime.
28:15Everything great.
28:16Can't complain.
28:17Yep.
28:17What's the conference finals or a bunch?
28:19Man, listen, at this point, it's championship or a bunch.
28:22We done been there twice, baby.
28:23I like that.
28:25What's your name?
28:26Tyler.
28:26Tyler.
28:26Nice to meet you.
28:27Oh, man.
28:27Tyler.
28:28Nice to meet you.
28:28Let's go.
28:29Let's go to work.
28:32The 43 points that Donchich had grabbed the headlines Tuesday.
28:37The 41 that Anthony Edwards had in their opener Wednesday at Portland.
28:43Most points scored in a season opener in Timberwolves franchise history.
28:48We start the second quarter.
28:49Here comes Vincent into Aiden.
28:51Gobert is there.
28:53The Lakers' point of emphasis coming out of that timeout to get Aiden to touch in the paint.
29:02He scores over the rim protector in Rudy Gobert.
29:06Aiden Chenzo losing it inside.
29:09And the feed from Conley is out there.
29:10Gobert.
29:12Also, Jalen Clark is on the floor for the Wolves.
29:14Now, as Reed remains, here is Rui, Hachimura, Aiden, and Austin Reeds.
29:20And Aiden over Gobert.
29:22I love the attentionality by the Lakers right now.
29:24Making sure to get Aiden into the ball game.
29:27Making sure he gets touches right away in the second quarter.
29:29Taking a drive inside by Reeds.
29:31With the collision, they go out of bounds.
29:33Four on four.
29:34DiVincenzo, Clark.
29:37A rising player.
29:38And the 38-year-old Mike Conley.
29:41Off the bench now.
29:43Better to manage the minutes, Chris Finch told us.
29:47DiVincenzo, Moravia defense.
29:50He's at number.
29:51And DiVincenzo, known for his shot-taking ability.
29:57Bouncing back, I'd say, after game one.
29:59I told Alley, he flipped him then.
30:02He played like something.
30:05Yeah.
30:06Something that stinks.
30:07Hachimura with a lot of congestion.
30:11Wolves control.
30:12DiVincenzo, Clark was set up.
30:15Reeds is there.
30:17Tapping was up and through.
30:18Got it to go.
30:19You know, one thing that I'm really impressed about with the Timberwolves so far
30:22is that transition offense, normally when you're a great transition defensive team,
30:27you're not really a great transition offensive team.
30:30And so, to see them be able to put both together is really impressive.
30:34DiVincenzo, I'm impressed with their depth.
30:36You think about Shannon Jr. coming in early.
30:39Nas Reed came in early.
30:41But you talk about the young fella, Clark.
30:43Yeah.
30:43He really had a huge impact in their game one play against Portland on the defensive end.
30:50And you have guys that have the switchability.
30:52You understand what it takes to win a championship.
30:54OKC, they have that.
30:56They can switch at every point from the guard position.
30:59And two rules aren't far off.
31:01I calmly just picked up his third.
31:03Hachimura.
31:05Reed is on him.
31:06Shot clock at five.
31:08I personally want to see more of that with LeBron James being out.
31:14I want to see Rui just involved in the offense more,
31:17but also just being more aggressive when he gets his opportunities.
31:19So, good job, Rui.
31:21Overeem reads the rebound.
31:24He's got five.
31:26Inside.
31:27Hachimura plants.
31:28Gobert couldn't get him.
31:30There he go again.
31:31Yeah, he shot six shots last game.
31:33All of them were threes.
31:34Today, he's mixed it up.
31:35He's had some pull-ups, he's had something in the paint, he's had some threes.
31:39That's the Rui we need to see.
31:41D. Vincenzo.
31:42Into Vincenzo.
31:43That's a foul.
31:45Vincenzo.
31:46They pick it up.
31:47Now in his third season with L.A.
31:52Vincenzo number one.
31:54Rui again.
31:56And this is what you were talking about, D. Wade.
31:58Rui being aggressive.
32:01A rim run at his size.
32:03Coach J.J. has talked about him taking advantage of mismatches and exploiting the defense in transition.
32:12Timeout taken.
32:139.24 to go in the half.
32:17Lakers and Wolves on prime.
32:19Los Angeles, the NBA on prime is presented by Wingstop.
32:24Gorgeous day here in Southern California.
32:26Kevin Harlan along with champions in the WNBA.
32:30And this Parker from the NBA, Dwayne Wade.
32:32I'm with the NBA and WNBA.
32:35Royalty.
32:35So good to be with you guys.
32:37Good start.
32:38And we've seen our two stars really shine.
32:40Well, in a league that loves their stars, as fans of the game, you've got to be excited after that first quarter.
32:47It was Ant-Man versus Luka, matching bucket for bucket.
32:51You love when stars understand the moment.
32:58Lee trying to cut.
33:00Bones Highland had it.
33:01LaRavia was right there.
33:03There's a whistle and a technical.
33:04Looked like J.J. Redick had a lot to say.
33:11Well, at least he earned it.
33:12He gave him a thumbs up about the word.
33:14So it looks like he earned it.
33:16See?
33:17He's happy with it.
33:18Great.
33:19Steven Jens are with the line.
33:23J.J. Redick in his second season after a 15-year playing career.
33:28And to miss earlier to our other audience at the Lakers.
33:31That 50-win season, first time in five years, they put that together.
33:36They were the number three seed.
33:38Bones Highland with the ball.
33:43Conley's got the foul problems.
33:46That's a step back three.
33:48Hachimura was defending.
33:49It's dug out and stayed there by Clark.
33:51And right now, T-Wolves are living off of second-chance opportunities.
33:58Like right there.
33:58As the Lakers are struggling to keep the T-Wolves off the glass.
34:04Look at that.
34:05That's already six offensive rebounds.
34:08That's why I'm a big fan of Rudy Gobert.
34:11Because he does all the little things.
34:13They may not always show up in the stat sheet.
34:16But the things he brings to this team, and to all the teams he's been on,
34:20obviously allows him to be four-time defensive player of the year.
34:23Clark just picked up the foul.
34:25First for him.
34:26So here's Reeves at the line.
34:32Second-chance points to your point.
34:3514-0 Minnesota.
34:37Those offensive rebounds are huge.
34:39Now the other night, Aiton only had two offensive rebounds.
34:41And they're pounding the Lakers on him, grabbing some of those missed shots.
34:45That was evident in the playoffs last year, that first round,
34:50with the Lakers struggling to guard and figure out an answer for Rudy Gobert
34:55and the physicality of the T-Wolves at the rim.
34:59Gobert out.
35:00Julius Randle in for Minnesota.
35:04Clark going over the back of Waravia.
35:08Kevin, to your point about Aiton, I have a teammate that's back.
35:12All of us have a teammate now that's back in the studio named Udonis Hazen.
35:15And UD would tell you that you have to do your work early.
35:19Aiton has to do his work early if he wants to be a good offensive rebounder for this team.
35:24Cutting Vincent.
35:25Reads the feed.
35:31And he's got three.
35:33Here we go.
35:34In the corner, Clark.
35:35It's a three.
35:37He's improved his shooting.
35:39We're looking at a connected team, Candace.
35:42You're looking at a team that understands what their game is.
35:45Like you said, they're returning seven players, but also two.
35:47Look at a team and guys that know that coach trusts him,
35:50and he's going to put them on the floor.
35:51He's going to his bench, and his first two games are a lot.
35:54Get out, Hachimura.
35:56And as Hachimura knocks that down mid-range mastery,
36:00you've got a leader like Anthony Edwards for the T-Wolves.
36:04That same in that lovely soundbite as Bones Highland knocks down that mid-range championship or bust.
36:10That's your 24-year-old leader.
36:12So there's pressure that he himself is putting on this team that Western Conference is not good enough.
36:18Here's a drive by Reeves, defended by Highland.
36:24Reeves continues to rack him up.
36:26He's got seven.
36:27The other 90 at 26.
36:36Highland came in in the fourth quarter of their first game.
36:39They play some important minutes for them, and that builds confidence.
36:42And he's a guy who can fill it up, so they need him, and he built confidence last game.
36:46So coach trusted in Highland, allowed for him to hopefully have the season that he wants early.
36:51And what that drive by Gabe Vincent generated was a paint touch,
37:08which had the Timberwolves' defense collapse,
37:11which allowed Reeves to get an easy catching shoot through.
37:15First time, 52 apiece.
37:18Randle against a shot clock at seven.
37:21Beautiful play.
37:23Counted for two and sent it to the line.
37:26Time now for the Fly Better Moments presented by Emirates.
37:31Right here, we used to call it paint to grate.
37:35Gabe Vincent surveying, not taking that quick layup.
37:39T-Wolves' defense has to collapse, D-Wade, and you get an easy practice shot.
37:44When the ball comes from the paint, that's like your practice shots you take before the game.
37:49Well, it's so good when Austin Reeves has been doing the same exact thing.
37:55I think early on he had four assists.
37:57I don't know what he has at this very moment, but he's been doing the same exact thing.
38:00And so once you see someone that can shoot the ball any time they want, do that, give up a shot for a better shot, it makes you do it as well.
38:08And so good move by Gabe Vincent.
38:10They just picked up his first.
38:12They go inside.
38:13A turnover.
38:14Randall and down court, it ends up with newly instated Anthony Edwards.
38:18Donchuken as well.
38:21Reed on top.
38:23That's going to go down.
38:25Bones Island.
38:27It was a first-round pick by Denver, had some time there, re-signed by Minnesota in September.
38:33In the Lakers' last game, struggling with 14th first-half turnovers.
38:38Settled down in the second half and took care of the ball, but with live ball turnovers of the league.
38:44LaRabia shot.
38:48And Aiden was right there.
38:51And Aiden will ask to touch it.
38:52He's got four.
38:53The T-Wolves arguing, one in goal tending on that play.
38:58The Lakers having 20 turnovers last game.
39:01That's hard to overcome, especially when you have one of the greatest players sitting out.
39:06You cannot turn the ball over this much.
39:08You want to make sure, like J.J. said, get ball on basket and give yourselves a chance.
39:12Randall was shaking it in.
39:13Ball jarred away.
39:16Yeah, Lakers turned it over 20 times.
39:18Minnesota turned it over 19 times.
39:19Points of emphasis for both coaches coming in to tonight as Marcus Smart has come in.
39:26Donchuk, Hachimura, Smart.
39:28And Aiden and LaRabia, the Laker five.
39:33Highland remains on the ball.
39:37Daniels is in.
39:38There's a three in the corner from Rui.
39:39Defended by Randall and picked up by Edwards and kicked right there.
39:44LaRabia.
39:50Timberwolves.
39:50In this rematch, they beat the Lakers in the first round last year, four games to one.
40:00J.J. Redick was telling us, we finished the season so strong.
40:03Then we kind of took a week off.
40:04We caught our breath.
40:05We exhaled.
40:06And that was a mistake.
40:06And that's, there's always a dance at the end of the season.
40:10How much practice, how much build, rest, rust, all of those things.
40:17Edwards.
40:17Maneuvers, splits, drives, foul.
40:20Foul called in there.
40:26Ravia will pick it up.
40:28Anthony Edwards to the free throw line.
40:30Looking at the upcoming national TV schedule.
40:32Monday on Peacock.
40:34Tuesday on Peacock and NBC.
40:36Wednesday on ESPN.
40:39Terrific games.
40:40For more on these games and the NBA, go to NBA.com or visit the NBA app.
40:48Moravia's going to check out.
40:50Anthony Edwards has the defense off balance right now.
40:53I think last year he was a little bit more predictable.
40:55You knew he probably on the isolation would go for it to pull up three or to step back three.
40:59Right now, they don't know what he's going to do.
41:01He's getting the opportunity to put so much pressure on the defense.
41:04That's why he's getting to the line more.
41:05And if you're the Lakers, it's tough enough to guard Anthony Edwards' one possession.
41:09You get a miss and you don't get the rebound.
41:11And guess what you get rewarded with?
41:12You have to guard him again.
41:14How about Smart?
41:15Reeves at the other end.
41:17But Marcus Smart made that happen.
41:20But that's what they brought him for, Kevin.
41:21They brought him here for that intensity.
41:24That guy, defensive player of the year.
41:25He knows what it takes.
41:26And so it's good to see him get into the mix a little bit.
41:32It's Randall.
41:33An eight and roll challenge.
41:34Got his own miss.
41:40Surrounded by gold and outside it goes.
41:43And picked up by Smart again.
41:45Highland, shot clock at five.
41:47Randall, hold on.
41:49It's Cheyton McDaniels climbing the ladder.
41:51Part of the reason they brought Randall to the Wolves is for his playmaking ability.
41:59Doing a nice job of finding his teammate cut into the rim.
42:03Under four to go.
42:06Dodgich.
42:07Got it.
42:07The bump, the shot, and the foul on Jaden McDaniels.
42:11And D-Wade, this is what Marcus Smart brings to the table.
42:18That hustle, that tenacity was rewarded on the previous possession.
42:21This possession, the Wolves got that opportunity.
42:26Randall makes them pay with a no-look lob to Jaden McDaniels.
42:30Well, the entire possession started with Julius Randall shooting a shot
42:33and getting his own offensive rebound.
42:35Offensive rebound in his effort.
42:36He went out there, got it, got his team another possession,
42:39which led to obviously a lob to McDaniels.
42:42How about the shot-making in this game?
42:44Each team is shooting over 50% from the floor, 61% for the Lakers, 57% for Minnesota.
42:53Each team is shooting at least 50% from three as well.
43:00Well, Kevin, I want to bring it back to what D-Wade said
43:02because that's a guard comment right here.
43:04It's Everett.
43:05You got a boxer.
43:06You had to, you box out.
43:07That was bothering me.
43:08Randall, you box out Rudy Gobert.
43:11No, that ain't my job.
43:14That wasn't my job.
43:15I'm sorry.
43:20Guards always want to yell at the post, box out.
43:22It's Everett.
43:23You're right.
43:24Well, help us.
43:26Vanderbilt is in.
43:27Lakers are small.
43:28Here comes McDaniels with Gobert and Randall on the floor
43:32and on top, the screen from Gobert.
43:34Right here, the Lakers loaded up on Ant-Man.
43:41Vanderbilt is on him.
43:44Good fake.
43:47He's got 15.
43:48He'll stay there.
43:49Dodgers have the ball.
43:50Swipe by Devin Genzo.
43:51Oh, he kept Edwards.
43:53He floated foul.
43:55Offensive foul on Minnesota.
43:57Wipe it away.
44:00I saw another commercial.
44:02It flashed my eyes.
44:03It flashed my eyes.
44:04I saw another commercial.
44:05I don't know about that one.
44:11You know about it.
44:12I don't know about that one.
44:14That is not what it looks like it is.
44:20Dodgers with 25, 23 in the first quarter.
44:24That's a good part of the beginning of the second.
44:26About three to play in the half.
44:29Now Dodgers will bring out the defense of Gobert with a three.
44:33Edward three foul.
44:35In an adjustment in the Wolves defense, they're picking up Luka a little bit higher.
44:40Even when they have to switch with Gobert, they're making it a little bit tougher when he comes off the screens.
44:45Koshimura defending Julius Randle.
44:50Daniels.
44:53Coach Fitz talked about switching Rudy Gobert on Luka and said he was very confident in that.
45:00Dodgers.
45:02Three.
45:03Smart for three.
45:06Timeout, Minnesota.
45:09We're tied at 61.
45:15Marcus Smart, Candace, has come in this game and has changed the game.
45:23And it started on the defensive end of the floor.
45:25And now he gets rewarded for the corner three.
45:27Looking forward to that, Taylor.
45:45Thank you.
45:46Here comes Anthony Edwards.
45:4815 points.
45:50Donchich 25.
45:52Tied at 61.
45:54Di Vincenzo.
45:55Missed it all.
45:56Donchich catches.
45:57That season trade last year shocked the NBA world from Dallas to L.A.
46:05Outside Hachiburra.
46:06It's a three.
46:08Lunging rebound inside by McDaniels.
46:12Under two to go.
46:15Candace, I've watched Rudy Gobert settle into his role with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
46:20Got a chance to watch him up close in Utah.
46:23He would be mad if he was missed going to the basket.
46:25Right now, he just does his job.
46:27He gets back.
46:28He continues to bring what he brings to this team without having his hands or putting his head down.
46:33He doesn't get the ball.
46:34I love his role on this team.
46:35He's fully in it.
46:37I know Taylor is excited to get to the Luka and Ant, but let's give Julius Randle some credit here.
46:5114 first-half points.
46:54He averages the highest in his career.
46:56Luka knocks it down against the Lakers, the team that drafted him.
47:00Number seven.
47:02Did you have some beef for Miami when you went back and played that?
47:05Well, that don't count.
47:06I was old, but I did have some beef for Chicago.
47:07Edwards cross-court.
47:12McDaniels watching that baseline.
47:13On top, Randle.
47:16They are moving the ball very unselfish.
47:19Beautifully.
47:19McDaniels with a three.
47:21Hachimura with the rebound.
47:23Luka's got it with 27.
47:24Brought it every turn and fouled.
47:36Every time he takes it, he feels it.
47:39Right here, Rudy Gobert missing the easy bunny.
47:43Randle following it up.
47:44That's their 18th second chance point.
47:48And Luka just gets it.
47:50He's getting to any spot he wants to get to on the floor right now.
47:53And you can tell that the Minnesota Timberwolves are actually not,
47:57they're not getting angry that he's getting all these points right now.
48:00They were ready for Luka to score than everybody else to score.
48:03Evening Junzo picked up his second.
48:05And to your point, D-Wade, Coach Bench said he's okay with Luka living inside of the arc.
48:11I think the biggest adjustment in the second quarter is he hasn't made a three.
48:16That's what killed him in the first half.
48:17He was 4-4 from beyond the arc.
48:20They're making him work here in this second quarter.
48:24First Laker lead tonight.
48:31Down to 2-43 the other night in the opener.
48:36Highest mark for a Laker on an opening night game since Kobe's 45 in 2007.
48:41Oh, he stepped over.
48:42He's on the line.
48:44A turnover by Minnesota.
48:45That's their seventh.
48:47After having 19 the other night in Portland.
48:50You have a different look when Vandy, Vanderbilt, and also Marcus Smarter on the floor for the Lakers.
48:57Those two guys bring a defensive intensity that the Lakers did not have last year at this time especially.
49:03So, you can see it and you can feel it when those guys in.
49:07They bring a confidence to everyone else on the defensive end of the floor.
49:10Vincenzo checks out.
49:11Jalen Clark will check in.
49:13Half minutes to go first half.
49:14Angle, angle, angle.
49:15Right here.
49:19Jared Vanderbilt playing the five where the Lakers are a little thin in depth at the center position.
49:26Jackson Hayes out.
49:28Stay down.
49:29Good faith.
49:29Donchett fires.
49:31Foul call.
49:32I said stay down because I'm sitting over here.
49:36Not like I could do it.
49:37It's way easier over here.
49:41He's just a master.
49:45The terrific performance for Slovenian.
49:48Your old basket.
49:49The weight loss.
49:51The full camp ingrained in the system.
49:53Although they didn't have LeBron in camp.
49:55They're still working on chemistry and those things.
49:56But Donchett is not the face they're certainly sharing at him and LeBron at his franchise and Donchett at the line.
50:05Tip off the season with the NBA ID Season Start Challenge.

50:24Another free throw for Luka coming up.
50:26Anjic signed the three-year contract extension over the summer.
50:38And it was for a lot of money.
50:46Ten seconds.
50:48Lakers by five.
50:50By a 68-53 margin.
50:52And a drive by Edwards and a foul called Marcus Smart.
50:57Lakers had a foul to give.
51:02Rolls went by 11.
51:03I know that seemed like it didn't matter.
51:07It was something small.
51:08But having a veteran guard to understand where to take the foul at.
51:11Not allowing Anthony Edwards to get into shooting range.
51:14And then try to take the foul when he gets two or three free throws.
51:17Number two.
51:18Trying to beat the clock.
51:19Lakers by five.
51:24Ending the half on a 16-5 run.
51:30We're going to take a break and then take you to our studio.
51:35Lakers and Timberwolves.
51:37A rematch of the first round of the NBA playoffs from a season ago.
51:40You're watching the NBA on Prime.
51:56I'm going to get down.
51:5730 teams, six groups, nowhere to hide.
52:05The hungriest will advance.
52:09The rest will be left behind.
52:12Now this is high-stakes action.
52:14Everyone wants that cup.
52:15But only one will capture it.
52:18Are you kidding me?
52:20Terrific shooting in the first half from these two teams
52:36and these two players, specifically D-Wade.
52:40But like we talked about in the opening,
52:41Anthony Edwards is doing exactly what we say.
52:43He's not forcing anything.
52:44He's attacking.
