07:12and ready to face the much-traveled Carson Wentz
07:15and the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday night football.
07:19Al Michaels, Kirk Herbstreit, Kaylee Hart, I'm with you.
07:22When the Chargers are up to a great start, 3-0,
07:24but now they've lost three of their last four.
07:26They've given up a ton of points in the process.
07:28Injuries have played a very big part,
07:30but every team has the same dilemma.
07:32So, Kirk, how do these guys get their mojo back?
07:34Well, I think it's easy to point to those injuries,
07:36especially on the offensive line in the backfield.
07:38Joe Alt comes back, which will help.
07:39But to me, this isn't as much about the Chargers' defense.
07:42The last four weeks, they've not looked like you would expect a Jesse Minner defense.
07:45Remember, these guys were number one ranked defense a year ago in the entire NFL,
07:50coming off their worst performance, hopefully, of the year last week.
07:53So, short week, play with some aggression, get your attitude back.
07:57Vikings are 3-3.
07:58They're alternating wins and losses every week of the season.
08:01J.J. McCarthy is almost ready.
08:04He's got the high ankle sprain, almost ready to come back, just not tonight.
08:07So, Carson Wentz will make his fifth consecutive start
08:10in what is a very important game for the Minnesota Vikings.
08:13What's their plan of attack tonight?
08:14Yeah, he's done a pretty good job.
08:16Two and two and four starts in for J.J. McCarthy.
08:18I think they just got to start fast.
08:20They built their defense around the ability to rush the quarterback.
08:24They just haven't been able to work much with the lead so far this year.
08:27I think that's been a big emphasis with Kevin O'Connell.
08:30They get Aaron Jones back, which will help find some matchups,
08:32try to exploit this Chargers defense.
08:34Then a couple of teams trying to get on a roll.
08:37What happens tonight is the Chargers meet the Vikings on Thursday Night Football.
08:41Thursday Night Kickoff was presented by Subway.

08:57Night Football welcomes you to the following presentation
09:01of the National Football League.
09:05Hey, let me grab my guitar and get in the car.
09:08I'm on this wide, what a bill of debt.
09:13Land in the street, that's what I'm talking about.
09:18Crazy stuff happening on Thursday nights every week.
09:22Jordan is set out for the game for a 60-yard strike.
09:26Justin Herbert.
09:27Jefferson leaps to catch it, and he caught it.
09:31I'm working it up.
09:34Going deep for first quarter.
09:36A spectacular run by Adrian Peterson.
09:39The Canadian comments and scores again.
09:41Oh, yeah.
09:43Oh, yeah.
09:44Randy Moore, the best player in the NFL.
09:46A 16-yard laser by Philip Rivers.
09:49The Chargers are going to the Super Bowl.
09:52It's just me here.
09:54It's a miracle.
09:54Ways to watch tonight include our prime vision with next-gen stats broadcast.
10:04Each range player tracking events played live in science in the game from the start-game angle.
10:09You can also watch Spanish with Kiela and Espanol.
10:13Moments ago, Kaylee Harton caught up with Keenan Allen in our sideline connections presented by Verizon.
10:19Well, Keenan, on Sunday, the Vikings struggled, giving up big pass plays.
10:24What opportunity do you see for yourself in this offense tonight?
10:28I think just trying to score points, man.
10:29See if we can execute the whole game, start to finish, come out, start off with points, and just keep it going from there.
10:35News tonight, you guys had your left tackle, Joel, back.
10:39What impact can he have on the field for you and this team?
10:41Big time, man.
10:42He's an all-pro.
10:43So, you know, it's great to have those guys back.
10:45And, you know, a player like that can change the game immediately.
10:48Thank you.
10:49Keenan Allen back after one year in Chicago.
10:52On the right, of course, Jim Harbaugh, who does that before every game with Herbert in his second year.
10:58Kevin O'Connell, who was with the Rams, winning one of the Super Bowl in this stadium of the 21 season,
11:03now in his fourth season in Minnesota.
11:06Chargers won the toss.
11:07Will defer.
11:09Vikings will get it.
11:11So far, he's pulling up.
11:13Everybody trying to beat the traffic and ready to get started week eight in the National Football League.
11:20Cameron Dicker will be kicking off for Los Angeles.
11:23Miles Price working out of Indiana.
11:26That's Price right there, setting up inside his five-yard line.
11:36Chargers and Vikings.
11:38Waiting for the go signal.
11:48And off we go.
11:50From Los Angeles on this Thursday night.
11:53Kick is fielded at the one-yard line by Price.
11:56And the rookie comes out past the 20.
11:58Around the corner.
11:59He goes.
12:00Price will get stopped up at about the 45-yard line by the kicker.
12:05But there's a flag down.
12:07Cameron Dicker makes the tackle, but the flag is down.
12:10On the run back.
12:12And most of it is coming back.
12:14Cleve Blakeman is our referee tonight.
12:16That's Tyno Batty.
12:25He is a rookie out of BYU.
12:26So Carson Wentz.
12:35The much-traveled Carson Wentz.
12:37His sixth team in six years.
12:41Two and two this year.
12:43Replacing McCarthy after a week two.
12:46Five touchdowns to one in Texas.
12:48Moved the ball well last week.
12:50But once they got inside the 20, they were dead.
12:52They set up for five field goals.
12:54Yeah, that was amazing.
12:55Yeah, one at six inside of the red zone.
12:57Big emphasis, obviously, following that game against Philly.
13:00And for Carson Wentz here, there'll be series when he looks outstanding.
13:04And then there'll be series when you're scratching the head.
13:06Tonight, they just want him to be a distributor.
13:08Find the open man and get the ball out.
13:09Aaron Jones is back.
13:11He's missed the last four games.
13:12He flares out.
13:13The pass is behind him and incomplete.
13:16So Jones, many years with Green Bay.
13:18Good runner and a great pass catcher as well.
13:21Is the target here at second down and ten.
13:23It's good to see him back.
13:24Had the hamstring injury in week two.
13:27They really missed him.
13:28Not only catching the ball out of the backfield,
13:30but being a combination with he and Jordan Mason.
13:33When they brought Mason over from San Fran,
13:35that's really what they envisioned.
13:37The two of them together taking some of the load off of Aaron Jones.
13:40But he's back now to give him that tandem.
13:44Second and ten from the 13.
13:46Here he is, Jones.
13:53Stopped as he reaches the line of scrimmage.
13:55Benzel Perryman is there.
13:57Third down.
13:58How about T.
14:00I thought he might have jumped.
14:02He got such a quick first step right there.
14:05That's going to be a matchup to keep our eye on.
14:08Tart, I think, is having a great year.
14:11And they've had some issues with Ryan Kelly at center.
14:14Of course, not able to go.
14:15They went to Michael Jurgens.
14:17He wasn't very successful.
14:19And they moved Blake Brandle, 64 in there,
14:21who's really more of a guard or a tackle.
14:23He's only a third start in his career at center.
14:26And it's third down and ten.
14:28Jordan Mason is now the back.
14:34Wentz under pressure.
14:37Gets it away.
14:38Caught up at the 32-yard line by Justin Jefferson.
14:42They get the big man into the action immediately.
14:45It's a heck of a job here by Tartt
14:47because you know the pressure's coming.
14:49They bring five up.
14:50They end up rushing four.
14:51He gets hit right as he throws the ball.
14:53I don't know how he got anything on that football.
14:56But winning down on third down,
14:58you're always going to look up Jefferson.
14:59Good job of sinking in that zone,
15:01finding that soft spot.
15:02But what a job by the Carson Wentz.
15:05Showing you his strength at 6'5", 237.
15:09Playing through some pain on that left shoulder.
15:12That was Deion Henley who hit him.
15:14He gets 16 on the third and ten.
15:16First down now at the 32-yard line.
15:18Back to the ground.
15:19Cut him to the outside.
15:20The former 49er Mason picked up in a trade in the offseason.
15:23Gain of a couple of his second down and eight for the Vikings.
15:27There's so much emphasis on Jesse Menor and this Chargers defense.
15:33You mentioned in the open they started 3-0, had a lot of confidence,
15:37all three divisional matchups in these last four weeks with a lot of injuries.
15:42They've just not quite been the same team.
15:44Not as physical at the line of scrimmage.
15:46Bad eyes on the back end.
15:48He was most noticed for last week against Daniel Jones and the Colts.
15:53Last year they gave up only 18 points per game.
15:56They've allowed 31 per game over the last three.
15:59Second to Nate.
16:00To the outside goes the pass.
16:02That's Addison.
16:02We had a big game last Sunday.
16:05And he's out of bounds.
16:06Close to a first down.
16:08Broke away from Dante.
16:09Jackson sets up a third down and one for the Vikings.
16:13Jesse Menor's scheme against Kevin O'Connell.
16:15He wants to keep the ball in front, especially after last week against Jonathan Taylor.
16:20And as I mentioned, Daniel Jones gave up too many explosive nine plays of 15 yards or more.
16:26So their goal tonight, keep everything in front and make Carson Wentz and his Vikings offense
16:30be consistent in driving the ball at the length of the field.
16:34From the 41, third and one.
16:37And now Jefferson is going to line up in the backfield.
16:41Wentz rolling under pressure.
16:46Has to just heave it away.
16:48Great pressure put on.
16:49That time for the Chargers to make it fourth down and one at the 41.
16:53Derland James, who blitzes a lot from the secondary, put the heat on him.
16:57And Jesse Menor rolled the dice here on this third down and short.
17:01He's right here.
17:02He starts to sneak up.
17:03He's always near the line of scrimmage.
17:05But you can see they bring pressure from the other side as well.
17:08Nobody's able to pick him up.
17:10And Wentz doing everything he can to keep that play alive.
17:12But a good job at timing that up by Jesse Menor there on that third down and short.
17:20That's Darius Davis back to receive the kick.
17:24Ryan Wright is the punter.
17:27And made the 17-yard line by Darius Davis.
17:45So, 320 into the game in L.A. on this Thursday night.
17:51A look at Duport Beach down the coast.
17:53No score.
17:57The work from the other 17-yard line.
18:01Kanani Gidale is the running back.
18:05Start of the run.
18:07That goes nowhere.
18:08Jonathan Bernard gets into the backfield.
18:12Stop him for a loss.
18:14So, Herbert picked in the 2000 draft just after Tua Tonga-Vailoa.
18:20You can see he has the most pass attempts and pass yards in the NFL this season.
18:26And part of the reason is their top two running backs are out.
18:30Maji Harris gone for the season.
18:32Murray and Hampton will be back, they hope, sooner than later.
18:37So, you know, you've got to be down as the running back, second and 13.
18:42Perfect.
18:42First to make it a passing offense for a coach who looks to run the ball if he can.
18:48And that pass is picked up.
18:52Rodgers, no stranger than interceptions, gets another one.
18:56Touchdown.
18:59Isaiah Rodgers.
19:00He had a pick-six against Cincinnati a few weeks ago.
19:11And had a rough week last week against Philly.
19:15This time early in this game.
19:17Steps up.
19:18They brought pressure there.
19:19You can see Metellus walking up.
19:21Ends up bringing the pressure.
19:23That's a hop.
19:24He's trying to get the ball out.
19:25It's just behind.
19:26Good recognition by Rodgers.
19:28Did he complete that catch?
19:29That's the question.
19:30Let's make sure he caught that ball.
19:34Well, all turnovers get reviewed.
19:37You don't need to challenge this.
19:38Here's a great look here.
19:41That's as good a look as you're going to have.
19:44When Terry McConaughey is training, you get a better look at this.
19:46Terry?
19:47Well, meanwhile, who's Blakeman?
19:49The previous day is under a view.
19:51Obviously, he does get control.
19:54Clown the ball touching the ground.
19:55Now, he's got to maintain control during and after contact with the ground.
20:00And that's that last little bit we see with the ball moving.
20:04Does he actually lose control with that right hand?
20:07He's good here.
20:08He's still good here.
20:10You know, he's still got the fingers wrapped around him.
20:13I don't see enough to reverse right there.
20:15And the call on the field, of course, was an interception and an 18-yard return for a touchdown.
20:24And, of course, Brian Flores is well-known.
20:27They are a pressure defense.
20:29Walk people up.
20:30They'll pressure you.
20:31They'll walk out.
20:32And a full veteran in Justin Herbert on his first series.
20:38Well, the Charger offense is still out on the field at the moment.
20:41And the Minnesota defense is out on the field.
20:44Herbert's going to come over to the sideline as everybody looks up.
20:48Rodgers in that game against Cincinnati also had a 66-yard fumble return.
21:00Harbaugh just waved it off and said it's incomplete.
21:03Yep.
21:04And you see Herbert looking at his wristband.
21:08Really when the field was an incomplete pass.
21:10He's up third down.
21:15So, Herbert, the Chargers catch a break.
21:17That was a hot, thrown a little bit to the inside, thrown right into the arms of Rodgers.
21:24Looked like he had to pick six, but just unable to secure the ball as he fell to the ground.
21:29Now, the good news for the Vikings is they got him behind the sticks,
21:33which is going to be a big story in this game tonight with Brian Flores
21:35and the pressure package that he lifts by.
21:38Get him at third and long, and that's exactly where they have him.
21:42Second week in a row, or in four days, actually,
21:46Hawkinson thought he had a touchdown the other day.
21:48Took that one away.
21:50Take the Rodgers one away.
21:51They want to reset the play clock here at 40.
21:55And it's third down at 13.
21:56On the Chargers' first drive of the game.
22:02Pressure.
22:03On the run, he throws.
22:07He hits Allen.
22:08So, they were collapsing around him.
22:10He sent everybody, and he finds Allen in his 13th season for a first drive.
22:15And the tough thing is, when they walk all these guys up,
22:18is communicating and making sure everybody's on the same page.
22:21Mattelis ends up dropping by Dell with a great pickup.
22:24And there's the threat of Herbert, the athletic ability of stepping up,
22:27climbing in the pocket.
22:28You can see it gets the defense's attention.
22:30The eyes go to Herbert.
22:32And then the good job of recognizing Keenan Allen there
22:35in an open spot there for the first down.
22:37Keenan Allen there for the first down in the 31-yard line.
22:45Through the middle.
22:46Nothing.
22:47He died.
22:49Second out of ten.
22:53Ryan Flores is as aggressive as they come.
22:56He's a defensive coordinator.
22:57A lot of people try to mimic his scheme and his aggressive approach.
23:01Greg Roman on the other side is a play caller.
23:04Boy, they came into this year thinking,
23:05okay, we've gotten stronger in the interior.
23:07We're going to do a good job of running the football.
23:09We've got two good backs in Omari and Hampton and Ajay Harris.
23:12Of course, they're injured.
23:14The line's been injured.
23:15So they've had to go back to Herbert being a gun for the football 65% of the time.
23:22Second and 11.
23:27Pressure again.
23:28Gets it away.
23:29Caught close to the first down.
23:31Randy Gadsden, the second.
23:33Who's that played six years with the Dolphins at the turn of the century.
23:37And he had some game on Sunday.
23:40Out of Syracuse, fifth-round draft choice.
23:42The 164-yard game Sunday.
23:44Yeah, it was his coming-out party.
23:45I think a lot of people, he's a fifth-rounder.
23:47I don't know if a lot of people knew what he's capable of doing this year.
23:50But he has shown signs even prior to last week.
23:53Being a difference maker.
23:54A tough matchup.
23:55Even for a guy like Harrison Smith.
23:57Has a size, almost wide receiver skill set.
24:00They saved up to 250 pounds now as a tight end.
24:04Third down and two.
24:06And into the game comes Jarrett Patterson, who was just activated.
24:11Played a scouting score at Buffalo as the little Mac.
24:13Was with Washington in 21 and 22.
24:16His last carry until now was in 2022.
24:19Think about that.
24:20And he comes in on third and short.
24:24There's Amari Hampton, the rookie out of North Carolina, who they had such high hopes for and still do.
24:31Hope to have him back in a few weeks on the IR currently.
24:35What a heck of a job there.
24:36Third and short, Jarrett Patterson bounces off that linebacker.
24:38Greg Cashman for the first.
24:40Had it the pistol.
24:41Pass to the outside.
24:42Ladd McConkie, who was their leading receiver last year as a rookie tackle there by Harrison Smith.
24:48And as if the Chargers need more bad news on the injury front.
24:58Mekhi Becton was out there limping around, and he ended up going off of the field.
25:03So Foster Sorello ends up coming in.
25:05There he is right there, the big fella.
25:08Came over from Philly.
25:11Been playing through some pain to begin with.
25:14Had to get Bobby Hart out of retirement.
25:17He hadn't played in a couple of years.
25:19To bring him in as the right tackle.
25:22Paste and glue up front for this team.
25:25Herbert fires over the middle at the 40-yard line.
25:28Caught there by Gaston.
25:29Already two catches tonight on the first down halfway through the first quarter.
25:34Well, the trend continues of Herbert continuing to get hit.
25:37He's been hit more than any quarterback this year in the entire NFL.
25:41He knows it.
25:42You know, it's coming.
25:43Split safeties.
25:45The weakness there, of course, is you've got to be able to get the ball thrown down the middle of the field.
25:50Didn't take too big a hit there from Ivan Pace.
25:52But he's been pressured here early in this game.
25:55Been taking nine hits per game.
25:58Pressured 22 times per game.
26:00Keep it on the ground now.
26:04He does.
26:06Stop there by Ivan Pace Jr.
26:10Second down.
26:13You think of Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman.
26:15What do you think of?
26:16You think of 300-pound fullbacks.
26:19You think of two tight ends.
26:20You think of physicality.
26:22Control the line of scrimmage.
26:23But like we've talked about, they've had so many injuries up front to the offensive line.
26:28To their two featured backs that they've had to come up with different ways.
26:31But I think they're confident they can get back to run the ball tonight.
26:34They go three tight ends here.
26:36On a second down and four.
26:38Scrooting his way is Vidal for a game of about three.
26:43So it's third and one.
26:48I think a big reason they feel more confident.
26:50Number one, the Vikings have had some issues with kind of picking up for his esteem
26:55with some new personnel on the defensive line.
26:58But the other thing is, Joe, you can see how big he is.
27:016'8", 322-pounder out of Notre Dame.
27:04Played right tackle last year.
27:05But with Rayshon Slater out, has had to move over to the left side.
27:09And he's back this game, which is huge for the Chargers.
27:12Dad John, who's about as big 13 years in Kansas City.
27:16Third and one.
27:18Well, play action.
27:19He steps up.
27:19But there's a sack, throws wide open.
27:22Still moving around, but a flag is thrown to Conte.
27:27With a big game, but a flag is down.
27:29Late hit.
27:30They hit him late and high.
27:34Dallas Turner, the second-year man out of Alabama.
27:38Touch of the foul.
27:39Left in the passer.
27:40Defense swimming in the tee.
27:42First match of this is the goal line.
27:44He's in the catch.
27:45First down, Los Angeles.
27:46Did a good job of avoiding that pressure from Cunard.
27:49And then Dallas Turner comes in high.
27:51Actually lunges up into the air and hits him.
27:55So you get the completion.
27:57Yep.
27:57Yep.
27:58Get the completion.
28:00They attack on more yards for the penalty.
28:02See the ball now at the nine.
28:06It's going to be first and goal.
28:08On the Chargers opening drive.
28:11This will be the 12th play of the drive.
28:13Total balance.
28:15Five runs.
28:15Six passes.
28:16Gidell with the fullback.
28:19Matt Locke in the backfield.
28:21Nothing.
28:23Cunard that time.
28:24Stucked him.
28:25At the line of scrimmage.
28:26Second and goal.
28:27He collapses down.
28:29Just no respect at all.
28:30No concern for anything bouncing outside.
28:33And if he saw the formation you're talking about.
28:35And watch him just get downhill in a hurry.
28:38No chance for anybody to pick him up.
28:41Really good instincts.
28:42Has a great first step.
28:43Remember the Chargers have been struggled in the red zone.
28:47Only 10 touchdowns and 24 red zone drives.
28:50That's second worst in the entire NFL.
28:53Can they finish this drive off?
28:55Only the Raiders have been worse.
28:57Inside the 20.
28:59Second goal.
29:01Look out.
29:02Herbert tries to escape.
29:04He does.
29:05Herbert will work his way down on the 7-yard line.
29:09Bernard was there.
29:10You know.
29:11You don't think of Herbert as being necessarily a mobile quarterback.
29:13And that time, of course, he was just escaping.
29:15And when he scrambles, he's averaging 12 yards per carry.
29:18Yeah.
29:18He gets out of there.
29:19And he's tough to bring down at 6-6, 236.
29:22Watch Bernard again set the edge.
29:23Now keep your eye on him.
29:24Looks like he's out of the play.
29:26And instead, he finishes the play.
29:29Really good back-to-back efforts by Bernard.
29:32And gives you an idea of how he can be effective against the run.
29:35And obviously, as a pass rusher.
29:37This drive has consumed seven and a half minutes.
29:41Third and goal.
29:43On the 14th play of this drive.
29:46To the end zone.
29:47Caught.
29:48Touchdown.
29:48There's a late flag.
30:02Matt Locke talking to the officials.
30:05Could be on the celebration.
30:09Meanwhile, Gadsden picks up right where he left off four days ago.
30:13That's exactly what I was going to say.
30:14Here's your matchup right here.
30:16Good job of giving him just enough time.
30:19Good stem there to sell it to the outside.
30:21That's a matchup you're thinking you're going to win.
30:23And then Joe Alton, who again is at left tackle against Bernard.
30:26Good spin move to get in towards Herbert.
30:28And here's the taunting penalty after he beats him in a one-on-one matchup.
30:36The Chargers do finish that drive off.
30:41Well, you've got the sudden star right there.
30:45That could change the offense.
30:47You've got a tight end like that out of nowhere.
30:49Think about that.
30:50This goes from a pick six to a 14-play touchdown drive.
30:56Consuming 739.
30:58Unsportsmanlike conduct.
31:01Number 86 for Los Angeles.
31:03It's a 15-yard penalty on the P.A. team,
31:06which they left to take it from the 15-yard line to the 30-yard line and kick.
31:13It's also this foul counts as a first towards disqualification.
31:17The goal of the play is a touchdown.
31:19Okay, so that moves the ball back now.
31:23They'll snap it from the 30.
31:25Kicker setting up for the extra point, which would be, in effect, a 48-yard extra point.
31:32He has not missed a kick, a field goal, or an extra point all season.
31:36Do we put the kibosh on him?
31:44Whoa!
31:47Almost.
31:49Very close.
31:51But we didn't.
31:53Ten minutes to go.
31:54Opening quarter.
31:55Our artificial intelligence defensive alerts model uses live player tracking to process tens of thousands of data points,
32:13player tendencies, and schemes to display red orbs that identify the most likely blitz threats in the pre-snap.
32:20So when you see those red orbs, it's not necessarily a prediction.
32:23It's a, give you an idea of who is the biggest threat.
32:27Not on the defensive line, but that second, third level of a defense.
32:30Something to keep an eye on.
32:31Well, when it's Brian Flores, it could be everybody.
32:33That's so true.
32:34But what an answer by Jim Harbaugh and Justin Herbert, this Chargers offense.
32:41When you think about that drive, you had Rodgers with a touchdown, but it was overturned.
32:45I mean, it's 1313.
32:47They converted to Allen and went all the way down the field.
32:53So a big time permanent events.
32:55Meanwhile, you got a flag that comes in on the kickoff.
32:58And it's run back for the moment and then pushed back as Miles plays.
33:04But the flag was thrown as the ball was kicked off at that point.
33:10So somebody moved before the ship.
33:19Lee Blikman.
33:20Lee Blikman gets together with his colleagues and will tell us momentarily who moved first.
33:33Terry, you see this?
33:35Yeah, Kirk, it's the floor at the bottom.
33:38He's just out of our screen.
33:40He's moving as the kicker's approaching.
33:42He can't do that.
33:43His feet have to be stationary.
33:45There, here he comes, here he comes.
33:48And now that the kicker's started, he can't do that.
33:50He has to be stationary.
33:53It's like Ivan Pace.
33:57Filling the formation in the receiving team.
34:00It's a five-yard penalty for the end of the run, first down.
34:04So Carson Wentz, as we mentioned before, six teams, six years.
34:10He's got to have his mindset go around the fact that he's not going to be the starter either.
34:16He's been the backup every place he's been since Philadelphia.
34:19And think about the places he's been, the coaches he's been able to learn from, including Sean McVay, Andy Reid.
34:26He's got a great attitude about this stage of his career, where he is.
34:29And what an asset when your starter goes down to be able to rely on a guy who's played a lot of football.
34:34And a toss here to Mason.
34:36And Mason gets hit in the backfield and surges forward to about the line of scrimmage.
34:42Perryman hit him first.
34:43Loss of one, second down and 11.
34:46And just the early outset of this game, this looks like, as you'd expect, a different defense for Jesse Minner.
34:53Just the energy, the attitude.
34:55Perryman coming back last week, a little rusty.
34:58He's been out since week one when he hurt an ankle against Kansas City.
35:01Khalil Mack, only 12 snaps last week.
35:04You're seeing him, obviously, back.
35:06He's such an enforcer in setting the edge.
35:08So this defense, with some of their leadership back, looks different and feels different.
35:12Play action, second and 11.
35:21Look out.
35:22Wentz escapes.
35:23Gets away.
35:26Throws downfield and looks for Addison, but that pass is incomplete.
35:32Khalil Mack was there.
35:33Khalil Mack missing four games with an elbow injury.
35:37Came back last week.
35:38He played only 12 of 60 snaps.
35:40Hopes to play more tonight.
35:41Yeah, and he'll be out there in the majority of the snaps.
35:45You see Hawkinson, who's had to do a lot of his chip.
35:48Now Spool tries to pick him up with Brian O'Neill out.
35:51That is a big loss at right tackle for the Vikings.
35:54But give credit to Carson Wentz, another big quarterback, 6'5", about 240 pounds,
35:59able to pull away from Khalil Mack.
36:0313 and 11 talking about the Chargers offensive problems along the line.
36:07Vikings in that same boat.
36:10Look out.
36:10Right there.
36:12Case in point.
36:13The sack back at the 9-yard line.
36:17Justin Voigtby comes in for the sack.
36:22Second-year man out of Alabama.
36:23So fourth and 19.
36:26When you have an offensive line that's had the injuries that they've had, you're going to see movement up front.
36:32And when you have that kind of movement, it can affect the communication.
36:36Donovan Jackson himself working back from injury.
36:3874, you can see it goes inside, goes down, and really the entire pocket just collapses on top of wins.
36:45Brian Wright, his second punt.
36:46The first one was good for 42 yards.
36:48And that one at the side of his foot, but it stays in bounds and takes a nice hop for the Vikings.
36:55So not a work of art, but fairly effective anyway, as it's down at the 41-yard line.
37:00Chargers with the ball again in a 7-0 lead at SoFi.
37:03SoFi Stadium, tonight's aerial coverage is presented by SoFi.
37:14Open 2020, home of the Rams and the Chargers in a ton of concerts.
37:20Taylor Swift has played here a bunch of times.
37:23It's a busy joint.
37:25Chargers from the 41-yard line and left side are the Vikings there.
37:30So you've got a free play here, and the pass is dropped by McConkie in his hands.
37:37It was a free play.
37:38They were going to get five, but that's all Bernard came across the line.
37:42That's something you don't see.
37:44That McConkie dropping an uncontested pass.
37:48Defense number 58.
37:50Five-yard penalty replay first down.
37:52They've been having some success with these slot receivers in that opening drive.
37:57And here McConkie, I don't know if the defense, I just, what the heck, I don't even know what to say about that.
38:02I don't know if you got lost in the lights.
38:09They're going to say it as are we.
38:12Charger Patterson comes back in the game as the running back.
38:15They give it to him.
38:19Needs five, and it's close to it.
38:22Charger Patterson looks good.
38:23Then you go back to the opening drive, and the Vikings blitzed Justin Herbert's seven of the eight dropbacks.
38:29The difference in the line, and especially to Herbert, stepping up, being a threat as a runner,
38:33then keeping his eyes downfield, making a big conversion there on third down.
38:37Here again, they'll show you different looks.
38:39Sometimes they blitz, sometimes they don't.
38:41Gets pressured.
38:42Great job with the split safety.
38:44He's getting a tight end down the seam there for a nice touchdown to finish that drive off.
38:48Second down, one by Dell, working his way behind the pullback for a gain of seven.
38:55First down, Katie.
38:57Guys, earlier you saw Chargers right guard Mekhi Becton limping off the field.
39:01He hasn't returned.
39:02They say he's questionable because of a knee injury.
39:05All right, so that means Foster Sorrell will come in.
39:09There he was trying to work through this.
39:12He's shaking that head, and I don't think I can do it.
39:15Not yet, anyway.
39:18Final minute of the quarter.
39:20First down.
39:27Play fake.
39:28Protection goodness time.
39:30Gats then again.
39:31To the 37 is already cut four now.
39:34Great Harrison Smith in his 14th year makes the tackle there.
39:39It's a nice job of just kind of waiting and being patient.
39:42See Joe Ault again in, inserted back in, and left tackle.
39:46Missed the last three games.
39:49It's going to be a heck of a matchup all night with he and 58 going toe-to-toe.
39:52We've already saw that in the opening series.
39:54Bernard is a handful and checks out here for this second down play.
39:58Good run for the 30-yard line.
40:09Goes Vidal, and this should take us to the second quarter.
40:13So the Chargers have run 18 plays to Minnesota's nine, and as we go to the second, under one at SoFi, it's the Chargers' seven, and the Vikings' nothing on Thursday Night Football.
40:27What are you going to do to stop this offense?
40:33Yeah, we've got to try to find a way to get a stop right here.
40:37I think it will settle into the game.
40:39You know, had a chance at a pick six there early on.
40:41Would have changed the early part, but now we've got to respond.
40:43That's football.
40:44We've got to settle in on offense as well.
40:46Throw and catch, get some protection for Carson, and try to get a run game going.
40:50We know all about the injuries your O-line has battled through.
40:54The Chargers' defense is coming right at Carson.
40:56What more can you do to help him?
40:57Yeah, we'll try to help on the edges.
40:59We'll try to help inside where we can, see if we can get the ball out.
41:01We've had a good chance to use some quick passing over the last few weeks.
41:06We'll see if we can do that and, you know, get some catching runs for some of our guys.
41:10Thank you.
41:10Thank you.
41:11And back to live action.
41:12We talked about Herbert and his scrambling and averaging 12 yards per scramble.
41:16Here he goes again for a gain of 18.
41:19And a really good job of feeling the linebackers in depth.
41:22But what I want you to watch is off to the left, Lydell, the running back,
41:25who helps him out right there with a block of Metellus,
41:29giving more room to be able to pick up viable yardage.
41:32Lydell running hard, picking up blitzes, picking up blocks downfield, playing well.
41:37Doing a nice job, six-round pick last year out of Troy.
41:41Yep, still moving those legs again.
41:44They signed Najee Harris.
41:46They wanted Harris and Hampton.
41:48The top pick to be the guys, but they're both hurt.
41:51So now it's up to this kid.
41:53And Greg Roman going with Tucker Fisk, 42.
41:56You know, it's a monster.
41:576'4", 285-pound, tied in out of Stanford.
42:00Scott Matlock out there as well.
42:02300-pound fullback.
42:04So that's what you expect from a Greg Roman and Jim Harbaugh offense.
42:08We haven't seen a lot of it because of the injuries.
42:10We're seeing it tonight.
42:102nd and 6.
42:132nd and 6.
42:16Herbert rolling.
42:17Loves to roll to his right.
42:19Here he goes again.
42:20And Herbert finding his way for what he hopes to be a first down.
42:24He's very close to it.
42:26Tackled by Eric Wilson.
42:28Game of 6.
42:29And I think it's important to talk about when he gets under center and they bring Fisk in, 42 and Matlock 44, and they start running downhill, it sets up the boot game and the play-action game.
42:42And Herbert himself, as you can see, he's a tough guy when he takes off and runs the ball, not just on a scramble.
42:48But at 6'6", 235 pounds, he's an instinctive runner.
42:53First and goal.
42:55Six rushes, one pass on this drive.
42:58They get a seventh rush and they get a touchdown.
43:03Dydele into the end zone.
43:05So the Chargers come flying out of the gate after on Sunday they dug a 23-3 halftime hole.
43:20Different story tonight.
43:21Yeah, there's a long way to go tonight.
43:22But just a couple possessions in.
43:25And it's amazing what Joe Alts' presence has done to this offensive line, the much maligned offensive line with these injuries.
43:33It's helping Zion Johnson, Bradley Bozeman, even the right side.
43:38There's just more continuity, more belief when you have your anchor back in at that left tackle spot.
43:44Cameron Dicker with the extra point, and that is good.
43:47Two minutes into the second quarter, the Chargers have outgained the Vikings 128-16.
43:54And on the scoreboard, it's 14-0, Los Angeles.
44:08Chargers off to a rip-roaring start.
44:11Meanwhile, Carson Wentz, two out of five for 23 yards and been sacked.
44:20Chargers dominated, especially on the ground.
44:23Behind that makeshift offensive line, 55 rush yard, 70 through the air.
44:30And it looked like a different offense, different, really.
44:33They've had to adjust from one scheme to another.
44:37They've been more shotgun and more throwing the football, spreading defenses out.
44:41But with Joe Alts back in and see the fullbacks back out on that field and tied in,
44:45and more really what you expect from this style of offense in Grohman and Harbaugh.
44:52Dicker sends it down to the 6.
44:55Miles Price to run it back.
44:59So I speak.
45:00Finally knocked down at the 30.
45:02We go to Caden.
45:03Guys, let's take a trip to the legendary Troubadour Rock Club in West Hollywood
45:08to tune up on Carson Wentz's NFL games.
45:12The second overall pick in 2016, his time with Philly, ended in 2020.
45:16After that, it was stopped in Indianapolis and Washington,
45:19followed by stints here in L.A. and Kansas City as backups to Matthew Stafford and Patrick Mahomes.
45:24And with his opportunity in Minnesota,
45:26Wentz is the first quarterback in NFL history to start a game for six different teams in six straight seasons.
45:33Talk about a true roadie, right?
45:35I've been everywhere, man.
45:36I've been everywhere.
45:38Ball to the 30-yard line for the Vikings to start this drive.
45:44Wentz.
45:45And that has been knocked away that time intended for Jefferson.
45:50Cam Hart, you know, you forget about Wentz.
45:52Drafted in 2016, Jared Goff won one.
45:55He went two.
45:56Goff coming to the Rams.
45:58And he was having an MVP kind of season in 17.
46:01Who knows what would have happened?
46:02He got hurt toward the end of the season in Los Angeles at the Coliseum.
46:05And then, of course, that paved the way for Mick Foles.
46:08Yeah, opened the door up.
46:10Wentz had an opportunity in India as a starter in 21.
46:14And since then, he's been a backup.
46:16Right.
46:16And Washington, I think, got the start there under Ron Rivera at first.
46:20And got benched shortly thereafter.
46:23Meanwhile, on the ground this time to pick up the five here for Aaron Jones.
46:26Third down and five.
46:28Wentz, you know, you think about what he's had to deal with tonight.
46:31Take a look at our next-gen stats powered by AWS.
46:34See the pressure for the six dropbacks.
46:36He has been pressured.
46:37I noticed in that opening series there was so much pressure.
46:40His eyes, instead of looking downfield, reading coverage, he's looking and concerned about that pocket collapsing on him.
46:48Seven different Chargers have pressured him tonight.
46:52So, it's not just Khalil Mack.
46:53It's across the board.
46:55Chargers have 11 first dives.
46:57And Minnesota has one.
47:00Third and five.
47:01In the pocket.
47:08To the outside.
47:09Is that hauled in?
47:10Justin Jefferson makes the catch.
47:13Inbounds.
47:14Can Hart with the coverage.
47:15First down there.
47:16Second.
47:16How about that ball?
47:17Here we are talking about his career and what he's been through.
47:20And he's been pressured for six.
47:22There's his eyes.
47:23He sees the matchup.
47:24But he gets hit as he releases that ball.
47:26He couldn't have handed that to Justin Jefferson any better.
47:29And for a team that's down 14, they need an answer.
47:33And he just delivered there to keep this drive alive on a third down pass.
47:38From the 45.
47:39Box pit.
47:40Lob box pit.
47:42Lob box pit.
47:433-0.
47:45Changes the pull.
47:46Little toss back here.
47:49Jones.
47:50Backs his way to the 48-yard line.
47:52Aaron's back up the injured list.
47:55And wringing his right hand and wrist is Carson Wentz.
47:58Go back to the previous play on the first down.
48:00Remember the pressure we talked about.
48:02But as he followed through on that helmet.
48:04On the back side.
48:05It looked like Khalil Mack.
48:08You can see right away his reaction.
48:11That is painful.
48:13You see it in super slow motion.
48:15It's one thing.
48:16When you're coming through with all that velocity.
48:18And you hit that helmet.
48:20So he's got the left shoulder.
48:21And now the right hand he's dealing with.
48:23Seven and six.
48:24And with that hand.
48:25He delivers a perfect spiral to Justin Jefferson.
48:29And a first down at the 40.
48:32It's good to see a team hit the ball here when he gets into a rhythm.
48:35And obviously this offense really could take off.
48:39See soft coverage.
48:40Be able to just take that.
48:41Take the inside easy glance route.
48:44On time.
48:45Out in front.
48:48Hopefully this will get Wentz in this offense into a rhythm.
48:51He's going to face a lot of zoners.
48:58Macked at his elbow.
48:59Look down.
49:02Wentz to the outside.
49:04Caught by Jones.
49:07Scampers out at the 37.
49:08Back to go to Kaley.
49:10Well guys.
49:11Carson Wentz is trying to get something cooking.
49:12While the Chargers secondary is piecing it together.
49:16Safety Derwin James is questionable to return to the game with an ankle injury.
49:19His backup Tony Jefferson also questionable because of a hamstring injury.
49:24So you've got the rookie R.J. Mickens in that safety spot.
49:27That's big news.
49:28James has played every snap this season until now.
49:32And Mickens along with the rest of some of those younger safeties last week.
49:36Eyes in the backfield.
49:37Had very, very poor eyes.
49:39And affected them against the Eagles.
49:42Second and eight.
49:45And he's in the pocket.
49:46Tipped in the air and incomplete.
49:48Almost picked.
49:49And then almost turned off the hands of Perryman into the arms of Justin Jefferson.
49:55And that incomplete third down and eight.
49:57And now Perryman knew it.
49:58This is his experience.
50:00Watch him dart out.
50:01He's going to the slot receiver.
50:02He's just in a foot race to get out to get underneath that football.
50:07So he shows Blitz full sprint to get out underneath it.
50:11It worked perfectly.
50:12Just unable to hold on to that interception.
50:14Third and eight.
50:23Mason is the back.
50:25Play clock at three.
50:28Clap, clap, clap.
50:29Get it away.
50:31Pass underneath is caught.
50:33But the tackle is made there in Mason by Kane Hart.
