00:00Why does a Mexican jumping bean jump?
00:03You'll find out when one of these three contestants wins the chance to drive home
00:07in this brand new Pontiac 6000STE in just a split second.
00:15And now, here's the star of our show, Monty Hall!
00:24Thank you very much and welcome to Split Second.
00:26We asked you a little question at the top of the show.
00:29A Mexican jumping bean jumps because there's a little caterpillar living inside.
00:34That's true.
00:35And when it moves, its house moves.
00:38That's right.
00:39And when my kids are home for the holidays, you should see my house move.
00:42And they're not exactly caterpillars.
00:45Welcome to Split Second.
00:46Our contestants compete to win cash and possibly a brand new car.
00:49We'll be giving a lot of cars away.
00:51Diane's tried a couple of times, hasn't won one.
00:53She's a returning champion.
00:54But we have to meet her and two new players to go along with her.
00:58Sandy, please.
00:59All right, Monty.
01:00First, we do have our returning champion, our high-tech forecaster,
01:03who does French silk painting as a hobby, Diane Craig.
01:09And then a man who's driving his boss crazy while he's between career moves, Robert Faves.
01:16And on your right, a lady who won an award for writing some very creative advertising copy,
01:23Shelley Ambrose.
01:25Well, welcome to all three of you.
01:26Diane is our returning champion.
01:29The latest bit of information I just heard is that you do French silk painting.
01:33Would you describe that for me?
01:34That's painting on silk with special dyes that are used.
01:36You outline them with sort of a sticky substance and then put the dyes inside.
01:42It's kind of like a patchwork on silk.
01:45It's very nice.
01:45It must be beautiful.
01:45It's finished.
01:46It must be nice.
01:46Farves and things like that.
01:46Well, I've seen a lot of it.
01:47Oh, yes.
01:47You can sprinkle salt and have a nice effect.
01:49Those wonderful French silk scarves that we see, that's the kind of work you're doing.
01:52Yeah.
01:52Well, that's terrific.
01:53Very attractive stuff.
01:54Robert, you're driving your boss crazy.
01:55What does that mean?
01:56Yes.
01:56I'm a chauffeur for an executive of an advertising and marketing firm.
02:00In between jobs.
02:01That's correct.
02:02What do you want?
02:02Why did you get a job with him?
02:04Um, because it's a very dynamic company.
02:07He's an exciting man to work for.
02:09Yeah, but I mean, wouldn't he like to take you out of the driver's seat and put you upstairs
02:12into an executive seat?
02:12Well, I'm hoping that's what'll happen.
02:15Are you influencing him as you drive along?
02:17I don't know how much I'm influencing him, but I hope I can move up.
02:21You know, the trouble is you might become too good a driver and then he'll want you there.
02:24You know, typecasting.
02:25That's what I'm afraid of.
02:27Well, then get a couple of flat tires, make a long turn, go through a light.
02:30Put a couple of dents in the car.
02:31Put a couple of dents in the car.
02:32And then when he fires you...
02:33Then apply for a management position.
02:37You're sure to get it.
02:39Shelley, I'm going to say a few things to you a little later on when we return with our
02:42second round, but now let's get into our game.
02:45Split Second is a fast-paced quiz game where there are three answers to every question and
02:51the players all try to get one answer apiece.
02:54And when they all three do it in the first round, they get $10 each.
02:57If only two of them come up with an answer, they get $25 each.
03:00But if only one person answers the question, that person picks up the whole $50 in this
03:04first round.
03:05You buzz in when you see the entire question on the screen, not before that, because you
03:09would lock yourself out.
03:10Are you ready for the first round?
03:11Shelley, Bob, Diane.
03:14Ronald Reagan isn't the only showbiz personality to get involved with politics.
03:17It seems that ladies like government work too.
03:19So I want you to name the movie star ladies who hold or held these positions in different
03:24governments.
03:24Look at the screen.
03:26One who's an ambassador, one who's a member of the parliament, and one who's a princess.
03:29Diane.
03:30The U.S. ambassador to Ghana is Shirley Temple Black.
03:32Shirley Temple Black.
03:33Right.
03:33She held two positions.
03:34Right.
03:35And Robert?
03:35The crown princess of Monaco was Grace Kelly.
03:38That's right.
03:38And Shelley?
03:39And the member of Greek parliament was Melina McCurry.
03:41All three of you are right.
03:42All three of you get $10.
03:43Popular vacation resorts draw crowds of tourists to popular European islands.
03:50Here are three of those vacation islands.
03:52Pick one name the country it belongs to.
03:54Look at the screen.
03:55There's Corsica, Sardinia, and Majorca.
03:57Diane.
03:58Majorca, Spain.
03:59Correct.
03:59Shelley?
04:00Corsica, Italy.
04:01No, I'm sorry.
04:02Robert?
04:02Corsica, France.
04:03Correct.
04:03And Sardinia, Italy.
04:05So Diane and Robert get $25 each.
04:07And we turn to music.
04:08We've become accustomed to various unusual names for famous rock groups over the years
04:15like Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
04:17I'll give you part of the names of three other groups.
04:20You pick one and complete it.
04:21Look at the screen.
04:22They are Big Brother, Backman, and Credence, and Diane.
04:27Credence, Clearwater Revival.
04:28Credence, Clearwater Revival is right.
04:30Shelley?
04:30Bachman, Turner, Overdrive.
04:32Right.
04:32And Robert?
04:33Big Brother and the Blues Band.
04:35No, Big Brother and the Holding Company.
04:38That's the one that you're going to work for when you influence your boss.
04:40Diane and Shelley get $25 each.
04:46Now, whoever came up with the names of various animals have the same sense of humor as those
04:50rock bands, because the names I'm going to show you are kind of silly.
04:52Anyhow, pick a silly name and tell me what type of animal it refers to.
04:55Look at the screen.
04:56What's a wahoo, a wapiti, and a whooper?
04:59Shelley?
05:00A wapiti is a bird?
05:02No, it isn't.
05:04That's all I can say right now.
05:05Robert?
05:05A wapiti is an antelope or an elk?
05:08Yes, it's in that family.
05:09A deer, antelope, elk, family.
05:10Good.
05:11Diane?
05:11A wahoo is a kangaroo?
05:13A wahoo is, no, it would sound like one, but a wahoo is a fish, and a whooper is a swan.
05:17And so, Robert, all by yourself.
05:19You pick up $50.
05:20And you have the lead over, Diane Shelley Estate.
05:24Many children's stories and songs contain a trio of characters who are involved with
05:27one central character.
05:29So I'll give you the three of these trios.
05:32You pick one group, tell me what the central character is that they were concerned with.
05:36Look at the screen.
05:37We know the three bears and the three blind mice and the three little pigs.
05:39What was the central character, Diane?
05:40Three bears with Goldilocks.
05:42That's right, Shelley.
05:43Three little pigs, the big bad wolf.
05:44And Robert?
05:45The lady with the carving knife.
05:47Yes, good enough.
05:48And she was the farmer's wife, but the lady with the carving knife.
05:50So you all are right, and you get $10 a piece.
05:56One of the biggest sports in the world today is automobile racing, and the drivers have become
06:00international stars.
06:01So I'll give you the last names of three great car racers.
06:03You pick one, give me his first name.
06:05Look at the screen.
06:06Andretti, Lauda, and Petty.
06:08Robert?
06:09Mario Andretti.
06:10Correct.
06:10Diane?
06:11Richard Petty.
06:11Richard Petty, right.
06:12And the third one, Shelley?
06:13Nikki Lauda.
06:14Good for you.
06:14Three of you, I did well in racing.
06:16You get $10 each.
06:19Foods that we eat often carry the name of a specific place.
06:22So I'm going to give you three sets of specific places.
06:24Pick a set.
06:25Tell me what edible type of food it describes.
06:27Look at the screen.
06:29Valencia or Bermuda, Brazil, and Diane?
06:32Valencia oranges.
06:33Valencia oranges, correct.
06:34Robert?
06:35Bermuda, brown Spanish, or onions?
06:37Right.
06:37Shelley?
06:38Brazil nut.
06:39And how?
06:40Why did you look at me when you said nut like that?
06:42$10 a piece.
06:45Let's talk our own language.
06:46I'm going to give you three definitions.
06:48You give me the one word that each defines.
06:50And here they are.
06:51The definitions are...
06:53Words that mean the same, words of opposite meanings, and words sounding alike with different meanings.
06:58Robert?
06:58Words that mean the same are synonyms?
07:00That is correct.
07:01Diane?
07:01Words of opposite meanings are antonyms?
07:03Right.
07:03Right.
07:03And the last one, sounding alike with different meanings, is a homonym.
07:08Oh, yes.
07:09And Diane and Robert get $25 each.
07:13At this point, Robert has the lead.
07:14Diane second, Shelley third.
07:15Humphrey Bogart has become a cult figure, and according to a TV guide poll, three of his
07:19films are among the ten most played films on TV.
07:23I'll name his three leading ladies in these films.
07:25Pick one and name the film.
07:27Look at the screen.
07:27Now, the leading ladies are Ingrid Bergman, Mary Astor, and Catherine Hepburn.
07:32Diane, what was the film?
07:33Ingrid Bergman, Casablanca.
07:35Yes.
07:35Robert?
07:36Catherine Hepburn, The African Queen.
07:37Yes.
07:38Shelley?
07:39Mary Astor, The Maltese Falcon.
07:40You people know your movies, and you each score $10 at the end of round one.
07:46At the end of round one, Robert, $150.
07:48Diane, right behind him with $125.
07:49And Shelley, in striking distance with $75, will be right back with round two.
