Telstra testing has revealed some Samsung mobile phone users may be unable to call triple-0 in an emergency, with more than 70 models found not to be connecting properly.

00:00Telstra says 11 models of older Samsung Galaxy phones have been affected by the issue with
00:09potentially up to 60 other models requiring urgent updates. They say all affected customers
00:16will have 28 days in order to replace those devices with those potentially affected already
00:22notified by text or SMS. The telco says those who own the models that need to be replaced
00:28will be blocked from its network if their phones are not replaced within 28 days of being notified.
00:36Amongst the models affected the 2017 Galaxy J5 and Galaxy S7 Edge. Telstra says testing showed that
00:44the phones were not connecting to the Vodafone network when trying to make 000 calls but only
00:50when the Telstra or Optus networks were unavailable. The Australian Communications Consumer Action Network
00:57says potentially up to 50,000 Optus customers and up to 50,000 Telstra customers could be affected
01:05by the outage. Samsung says they're working closely with their carrier providers to ensure all their
01:11devices work reliably in an emergency situation.
