00:00I have an even more excited outlook than I had yesterday,
00:06and I think that's what we would love to hear from you Warrior fans.
00:09Can we load this up right now and talk to you all?
00:11We've got an hour until Greg Cosell comes on.
00:14So you woke up yesterday thinking what about the Warriors,
00:17and then you woke up today thinking what about the Warriors?
00:22Like what sort of happened in those 24 hours now that you've watched one game?
00:28We'll acknowledge it's just one game, which is why my biggest takeaway,
00:33my biggest excitement about what happened last night, Dibs,
00:37was what happened after the game.
00:39And I believe that it actually leads to me needing to look at you and take an L.
00:46Oh, boy.
00:46I've got to take one.
00:47Okay.
00:48Because what I saw after the game was the Warriors' culture winning out
00:56through a situation that I felt very, very worried about in terms of its complexities,
01:03which was all of the off-season drama with Jonathan Kaminga,
01:07but it goes way, way deeper than that.
01:09I would challenge anybody to find me, forget the NBA,
01:13find me a team in professional sports that one game into its season,
01:19you're going to get Buddy Heald and Jimmy Butler and their performance
01:25that they always have after the game.
01:27Turns out Buddy hates Jimmy.
01:29Hates him.
01:30So you get Buddy hates Jimmy.
01:32You get Jonathan Kaminga referring to himself as a sponge.
01:36You get Jimmy Butler saying, yeah, me and Jonathan, we've been hanging out.
01:41We've been hanging out before practice, after practice.
01:45I know how good he can be.
01:47I know how good he wants to be.
01:49We're trying to explain to him what he needs in order to achieve that greatness.
01:53You have Steve Kerr and Jonathan, I think, striking new chords about one another.
01:59You have Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler putting a bet on the table
02:04and then making it public that you're going to outshoot Steph Curry from the free throw line.
02:09You have Steph Curry being made aware of this bet for the first time
02:12and telling his teammate, you've got no chance to beat me.
02:15Do you understand the sideshow that came after the show?
02:19The Warriors need to rename themselves the after party.
02:23This thing is just as entertaining as the game.
02:26And there's a connectivity to what you're seeing from this team
02:31that I have a hard time believing is not going to show up in the standings.
02:35This group is really, really on the same page.
02:39And through all of the drama of the offseason, I really had my doubts
02:44that at least this quickly they would be able to capture that vibe
02:49knowing that there was going to be all of these Kaminga questions after every game.
02:55And I was told directly by people with the Warriors,
02:58don't you worry about it.
02:59The culture here is going to swallow that up and spit it out.
03:02It'll be fine.
03:03We're a game in.
03:05Anything can happen.
03:06This could change.
03:07But right now, this is exactly how you want it to look and feel.
03:12The culture has, through one game, swallowed that up and spit it out.
03:16You've got Jimmy talking about mentoring JK.
03:19JK talking about how I just want to do the right thing.
03:22Jimmy and Buddy with a new level of mutual hatred.
03:27And Buddy hates him.
03:28And ha ha ha.
03:29And I really love Jimmy.
03:31And Draymond Green with a triple single.
03:32He's a plus 20 in the plus minus.
03:35And, oh, by the way, Steph was mostly not needed until he hit a 30-footer.
03:41Think of what you just said.
03:42Steph Curry was mostly not needed.
03:44Not needed.
03:45I mean, Steph was fine.
03:46Yeah.
03:47I mean, he was just whatever.
03:48Steph Curry was running the middle, Steph.
03:50He played basketball.
03:50Steph Curry plays basketball tonight.
03:52Shout out Doc Pandia.
03:53And then he hit a 30-footer.
03:55And he didn't go night-night, but they cut to Guy Santos on the bench.
03:59And Guy hit the night-night, and it's like, I get it, Steph.
04:03It's game one.
04:03You don't want to go to that too early.
04:05He threatened it.
04:06Did you see that?
04:06He kind of, like, leaned down.
04:08He pulled his hands up, but only to, like, chest level.
04:11He looked at the crowd, and he pulled the hands up, like, I'm going to do it.
04:14And he's like, maybe it's a little too early to do it.
04:16It's game one.
04:16It's too early.
04:16I tell you what.
04:17And then Guy did it on the bench.
04:19And half of us at Splash did it, by the way, as well.
04:21I, in my living room, with a towel on my shoulder, as I took a pause from my dishes, and, you
04:27know, baby girls upstairs, and my wife had gone to bed, I actually hit the night-night,
04:31and I looked at the TV.
04:33I'm like, yeah, Steph, me.
04:34Oh, no.
04:35It's me and Guy.
04:36It's me and Guy doing the night-night.
04:38Not Steph.
04:38Hey, Dibs.
04:39Yeah.
04:40Hey, Dibs.
04:40Your night-night.
04:41I like your night-night, because I'm doing the same thing.
04:44Yeah.
04:44But, yeah, that moment was like, all right, Steph.
04:47Oh, wait.
04:47Steph Curry does play basketball tonight.
04:49Not that he was, he wasn't bad.
04:51No, he wasn't bad.
04:52He was good enough.
04:53He was not, like, elite Steph, but the rest of them were so good, and Jimmy, not Jimmy
04:59Buckets, but Jimmy Free Throw.
05:01Man.
05:01Maybe we'll call him Jimmy 15-footer.
05:03Jimmy was phenomenal last night.
05:04Yeah.
05:04I do want to say this, and I don't want to, like, get the show bogged down into this take.
05:09This is going to be about the refs, isn't it?
05:11It's not about the refs.
05:12That first half was absolutely unwatchable.
05:16It was awful on both sides.
05:18You had mutual flopping.
05:20You had Draymond getting a tee from the bench.
05:23You had too many whistles.
05:24You had a lot of turnovers.
05:26It was ugly, and I get it.
05:28These guys are all, like, coming out of the preseason.
05:30But for me, that first half was, oh, my God, is this what we've waited all these months for?
05:36That first half was mostly unwatchable.
05:40You're right.
05:40It's the first half.
05:41Like, you can sit down and...
05:43It was unwatchable.
05:43Yeah, but I mean, I don't know, man.
05:46Like, everybody is rusty.
05:48Like, yeah, it was a sloppy deal.
05:52And I didn't love a lot of the calls.
05:54I didn't love a lot.
05:55I mean, in some of them, I mean that in both directions.
05:58Like, a lot of times, I thought, you know, the Warriors would get called for a foul, and you're like, I'm not a foul.
06:04And then the Warriors go to the other end, and the foul would get called, and you're like, nobody touched him.
06:09Like, you know what I mean?
06:10And so, I'm going to hope that this isn't what most games are going to look like, and I mean that from the entire group.
06:18A little wobbly out of the gate, but it is out of the gate, and the second half certainly looked better, and sometimes it's going to be like that.
06:27Sometimes it's going to be like that.
06:28There was only one time where I think Warrior fans wanted to stand up out of their chair and be offended, and when games get like that, where tensions go up, and technicals are happening, and the officials are having a hard time keeping control of it,
06:43and then you get a player like Marcus Smart who looks like, whether he was or not, but does something where he looks like he's either trying to intentionally injure a star or at least being cavalier about it.
06:57And that's going to get everybody going.
07:00And actually, I thought that was the moment when the officials grabbed control of the game.
07:05That was the moment where they're like, no, we're not just like, you're not fooling us.
07:10We're going to call it, and we're going to go to the review, and now we're going to tap you for a flagrant.
07:16And it was at that point that I think Marcus got word like, dude, we're not doing this.
07:22We're not doing this tonight, and then it got better from there.
07:24The whole thing got better from there.
07:25It got better, and you got into that third quarter flow, and they started to actually play basketball.
07:31But that first half, so many fouls, so many turnovers, and that's where we can talk about Jonathan Kaminga, first half, second half.
07:37I think that J.K. in the first half was a little bit, he was pressing a little bit.
07:42He was a little sloppy.
07:44They all were sloppy.
07:45Draymond Green had four turnovers, and there were, I think, 27 total turnovers.
07:50That first half was just patently ugly, and I do like what you said about, you know, the locker room, and they come out, and I don't know if they actually script their first five plays like Shanahan.
08:00I don't know.
08:01The opening play was, all right, J.K., boom, pop open, get a three, and then the next play, he goes ahead and slips the screen, and he gets a bounce pass and a layup.
08:11It felt like they wanted to get J.K. a couple of comfortable looks in the second half to get him going.
08:17Here's Steve Kerr on that area of the game that you're talking about with some general comments about Jonathan Kaminga, who all in all, again, the second half was a chef's kiss.
08:27I thought he was just unbelievable in the second half.
08:31Here's what Steve Kerr said.
08:32I think he's really, really matured.
08:35You know, he's had a great camp.
08:37We've had some really good conversations.
08:38I think he has a better understanding of, you know, what we need.
08:43He saw in the first half, he took a couple tough mid-range fadeaways that we don't want.
08:48He immediately held up his hand.
08:50He realized, you know, that was not the shot.
08:52He had, you know, a couple turnovers where he drove into traffic, and second half starts, and, you know, the whole talk at halftime was, let's use Steph Curry.
09:02Let's use his movement and put pressure on the defense, because we didn't do that in the first half.
09:07And, Jonathan, the first few plays of the third quarter, it was beautifully screened for Steph, slipped to the rim.
09:16Draymond got him a bucket.
09:17We ran our split-cut stuff.
09:19They both went with Steph.
09:20He hit the wide-open three.
09:23I think he just has a better sense of what's needed now compared to past years.
09:29I mean, when I hear him say that, I don't know that you would call that a script, because every play has multiple options.
09:36It's just like when people go, I can't believe Kosh Anahan didn't dial up more for Jawan Jennings.
09:41It's like, wait a minute.
09:42You drop back to pass, and there's five options going on out on the field, and then you see what the defense does, and then you grab what the defense allows you to do.
09:50I think basketball, no different, but they ran some plays.
09:55Some of those plays went J.K.'s way.
09:57He absolutely did.
09:58Everybody, everybody on the floor did exactly what you wanted them to do.
10:03They were reading the defense.
10:04They were effective.
10:05They were smart with the ball, and they went out and turned a one-point lead into a double-digit lead literally before a lot of people got back from the restroom.
10:13Great.
10:14That's where they won the game, was right there in that four-minute stretch.
10:17Yeah, and that slip cut that he's talking about is the play that I'm going to highlight, where I do think that that was a scripted play, and we can ask Steve about that.
10:25I don't want to get too deep in the weeds, but Kaminga comes up to set a screen for Steph, which is normally like either Steph fades it, or he comes off the screen, and Steph gets the ball.
10:34But Draymond immediately is looking right at J.K. for the bounce pass, and he threads it right to him, and right up, bank it in.
10:43That's a bucket, and that was a classic J.K. move right there.
10:46888-957-9570.
10:49What stood out?
10:50What grabbed you?
10:52For me, it was the connectivity of everything you heard all of these Warriors say after the game, maybe even more so than the game itself.
11:02But I got to think, for some of you, the optimism rises a little bit when you see how effective this group was, combined with the fact that there's some built-in acquisitions coming.
11:15Moses Moody's coming.
11:16DeAnthony Melton is coming.
11:18Sure, throw Seth Curry into this as well.
