Hayley Williams and Jack Antonoff talk about the financial burdens young bands face when on the road: "I was just talking about this the other day. Like how I lost a a large chunk of my innocence the first time I realized that we had made enough money to get gas to the next show but we had to give like half of it to the venue."

00:00Why do they still take our merch?
00:01And I'm fine, but like, you know, like when I was a steel train,
00:04it's like handing over, you know, a hundred bucks
00:08that was going to go in the gas tank.
00:09Like, just stop.
00:10I was just talking about this the other day,
00:12like how I lost like a large chunk of my innocence
00:16the first time I realized like we had made enough money
00:19to get gas to go to the next show,
00:21but we had to give like half of it to the venue.
00:23And I was like, what?
00:25And my dad was like, this is America.
00:27Literally, I remember it too.
00:28It's insane.
00:28And I was just sort of like, I've had that firsthand,
00:32you know, regardless of how anyone wants
00:33to rewrite the origin story.
00:34It's like, I've seen it from every level
00:36and I know how hard it is to be someone who plays for no one.
00:39Yeah, right.
00:40But, you know, that's tough and that's character building.
00:44What fucks me off is why is drawing a few hundred people
00:49not an honest living?
00:50Because that's so hard to do.
00:51All right.
00:52So, let's think.
