00:00Ordnance survey has mapped more than 6.5 million streetlights across Britain, revealing which
00:06roads and paths are fully lit, mostly lit, mostly unlit or completely dark.
00:11Cardiff has the highest density in Wales with 451 lights per square kilometre, followed
00:16by Swansea on 367 and Newport on 345.
00:22The data sets out to help councils and planners identify areas that need improvements.
00:27The findings are particularly relevant given wider safety concerns.
00:31A YouGov survey found two-thirds of women feel unsafe walking home alone at night, at least
00:36sometimes, and a quarter say they always do.
00:40Half of women avoid being out at certain times to reduce risk, while many also feel unsafe
00:44using taxis or public transport.
00:47Younger women are especially affected, with nearly three-quarters of those aged 18 to 29
00:52reporting concerns.
00:54Other data shows where streets shine, and where more could be done to keep people safe
00:58after dark.
