03:07The officer arrives and begins to do CPR
03:23Paramedics arrived shortly after
03:27But unfortunately despite everything they tried
03:32She was pronounced dead at 4 o'clock that day
03:36I'm Jane Ruffley and I'm a forensic scientist
03:46My role within the case was to examine the crime scene
03:52It was evident she had been stabbed multiple times
03:55It was at least 28 times
03:58They were forceful injuries indicative of a ferocious attack and a sustained attack
04:05It certainly indicated that the intention of whoever had inflicted these injuries was to kill
04:12The area where the body was located to the right was a wooden bench
04:21Where there was belongings on the bench and also on the floor
04:25She was identified as Brianna Jai
04:45So tiny
04:46Peaceful
04:47My name's Peter Spooner and I'm Brianna Jai's father
04:51When she was born I was like, you know, I had the feeling of just joy
04:58And looking forward to the future
05:00Me and Brianna's mum split when she was a young age
05:04Before Brianna's transition
05:06Growing up when I had her for the weekend
05:09We went to Blackpool, places like that
05:12Into the arcades, onto the beach
05:16I know it weren't much but we enjoyed, you know
05:20I enjoyed that time, we enjoyed that time together
05:23I lost contact with her for several years
05:26Something I really regret
05:29I remember I'd received a Facebook message saying she wanted to have contact with me
05:39After all that time it was, you know, I was shaking, I was nervous
05:44I was happy
05:46I'm Lorraine Sutton, I'm Peter Spooner's fiancee
05:50And he says, this is amazing, you're going to get your bond back
05:53We started chatting
05:56And I just thought that this would be the start of having a relationship again
06:01Two police officers knocked on the door
06:12They explained that they were the officers on the scene
06:16Explained what had happened
06:18It just didn't sink in
06:23I just went in a complete state of shock
06:25Peter was very quiet
06:28And he was just like grey in the face
06:31And I just sat there
06:33And I just kept looking at the messages
06:36Thinking she'd come online
06:39I don't think anybody knew what to say
06:44I had the happiest day of my life when she was born
06:58I had the happiest day when she got back in touch
07:03And then the worst day ever on that day
07:10And still to this day I'll never forget it
07:13I'm sorry I can't speak in a moment
07:19At the entrance to the park where she died
07:21The flowers left in memory of Brianna Jai
07:24A life that, like so many, played out on social media
07:27In TikTok videos like this
07:29These are like the only heels I have
07:32And they're too big for me
07:35When Brianna's name was actually identified
07:37It went viral
07:39I'm 17 years old and I'm scared to leave my house
07:43Because of things like this
07:46I haven't known what to say
07:49And every time I start I get upset
07:51How could you take a child's life?
07:53She was only 16
07:55And it honestly has made me feel heartbroken
07:59There was a community there
08:01Who joined in their grief for her
08:04LGBT plus people have always found each other
08:06On online spaces
08:07Because you're not always surrounded by people like you
08:10Hi, my name's Faith
08:11I'm an assistant, you're a little trans girl
08:16I was 15 at the time when it happened
08:19I didn't believe it
08:20And I remember just going silent
08:24I just broke down
08:25It was a shock
08:26It's those questions that go through your mind
08:28Whether you like it or not
08:30You want to know what happened
08:35The attackers have run towards Kulture's linear car park
08:38I can describe them clearly to you
08:40Because I was really suspicious of them
08:42The 999 call made by the dog walkers was very important
08:48Because it was made so close to the actual attack
08:52There was a girl and a boy
08:54And I'd say they were late teens
08:56One had the hood up with their hair protruding
08:58And they ran past me
09:00You can make an early hypothesis
09:02That the two people at that location who ran away are suspects
09:06From the description given
09:09Police start tracking through CCTV to the street from public transport
09:19CCTV was taken at the bus stop in Colcheth
09:23There are two people, a boy and a girl
09:26Then you see Brianna come into vision
09:33She just looks so distinctive with her long red hair
09:38And this great big fluffy hoodie that she was wearing
09:42In British law children are automatically granted what's called the right of anonymity
09:48Their identities are protected
09:52At this point the suspects were known as Girl X and Boy Y
09:58They match the witness descriptions from the scene
10:02And that is the first footage that we have of the three of them all together
10:16When Brianna told me she was trans
10:18I took that
10:19I struggled
10:24My head was just all over the place
10:26And I didn't really understand it
10:28I said I don't mind if you're gay
10:30And obviously she didn't like me saying that
10:33Because she was not gay
10:35I really wish
10:37I just dealt with it a lot better
10:39And I wish we didn't fall out over it
10:42And that's the guilt I have
10:44Peter did apologise to Brianna
10:46I can't see a single thing but it's made it even worse
10:50I've seen her on TikTok, I've seen how she blossomed
10:57It made me proud of her
11:02It was actually through him enjoying those TikTok videos that the pair started to reconnect and started to build a relationship again
11:14I think she was very brave coming out as trans, you know, and I hope she helped a lot of other children who were trans themselves who were struggling to come out
11:24Like they're very, very big, like I don't know how to show how tall they are
11:29I met Brianna online on TikTok when I was 13
11:33She came on my 4U page, it was like a homepage for videos that would be interesting to you
11:39I followed her and she followed me back and from there on she became my mentor
11:44I've always kind of struggled with my identity a bit more
11:49And she helped me come out of the box a bit more
11:54I remember the first video I saw was a natural school makeup video, which at the time wasn't very natural
12:00But she looked good
12:03She was kind of getting past the point of school
12:06She was getting ready to do her exams, but she knew that afterwards she wanted to do hair and beauty
12:11Which she really enjoyed, I think she would have been amazing at her
12:15I am Christina, I'm Brianna's auntie
12:21I'm Gillian and I'm Brianna's grandmother
12:25I looked at them videos of her on TikTok and I used to think, God, she's beautiful
12:32I can't believe how full of life and so confident
12:36You know, that's what she looked like to me on them
12:39Very stunning
12:41My daughter Bethany shared a real passion for makeup
12:45And as you can see through videos of Brianna, she was very talented
12:49Peter was building that contacts again
12:52But she was took away from us, you know, and that's what's sad
12:58In the last few hours, police have issued an appeal to speak to a couple seen in the park
13:03Yeah, I'm appealing to a male and female
13:04News of that spread very, very quickly
13:07A mum got in touch with the police and she said that her daughter had been heading out that day to meet up with Brianna
13:18And she said, I think my daughter might have been the last person to see Brianna alive
13:23Hi people, so it's all
13:27Her daughter was Scarlett Jenkinson
13:30On the surface, Scarlett Jenkinson seemed to come from a normal background, a nice family, they lived in a nice neighbourhood
13:38Both of her parents had respectable jobs
13:42Her father was a plasterer and her mother was a teacher
13:45She was pictured riding a pony, she just seemed really normal
13:49Scarlett's mum would be thinking, something's happened, Scarlett might have something important to tell the police
13:55Or is at risk herself, so phoning the police is a very natural thing to do in those circumstances
14:01The police actually asked, could you hand the phone over to Scarlett
14:07She said, yeah, we did meet, but she told the police, Brianna went off to meet some bloke from Manchester and never saw her again
14:16That phone call would have helped the police because it put Jenkinson potentially at the scene of the crime
14:23So a very important person in the investigation
14:27Things are happening very quickly, there's a description from the scene, but there are two people
14:35So any association there with Scarlett becomes a very important one
14:40Police learnt that Scarlett has a friend who lived in the area and he's a 15-year-old boy called Eddie Ratcliffe
14:47They first meet as 11-year-olds in Year 7 in Coulter's High School
14:50Where they actually make friends with each other, and that's some years back, and friendships formed very early on
14:59We also know that Eddie Ratcliffe had quite a privileged upbringing, his mum was a graphic designer
15:05His dad had businesses and had a kickboxing gym
15:08Growing up, Ratcliffe, you know, was really into the sport and competed at a UK level for kickboxing
15:14He went on holidays abroad with his family
15:18He was quite an achiever
15:21But chatting to his peers and his classmates, he had very few friends, he was socially awkward
15:27He really latched onto that relationship that he had with Jenkinson
15:32You've got two people now very important to the investigation
15:37You would find it difficult maybe to comprehend that young people could do so much harm to another young person
15:44But you have to always keep an open mind and follow the evidence
15:48You look at the culmination of different things
15:51Scarlett and Eddie match the witness descriptions from the scene
15:55Also, Scarlett had told her own mother that she'd seen Brianna that afternoon
16:02And then you've got the CCTV evidence
16:05At that point, there's enough for officers to apply for an arrest warrant
16:10Scarlett, this is what I've got to say
16:28Yeah?
16:30You are under arrest on suspicion of murder
16:32The arrests were carried out as part of a simultaneous operation
16:45How come I'm a suspect?
16:47How come you're a suspect?
16:49I don't know, all the information I've received is you are a suspect
16:53If you have two suspects, you want them away from each other
16:56So that the police can deal with them as individuals
17:00And without them knowing what each other are saying
17:03Scarlett is taken to Chester, to the Blake and Sweet
17:07I can't explain it
17:09Listen, listen, do it all I need to do, all right?
17:12Eddie is taken to Runcorn
17:15Two teenagers, the 15-year-olds arrested on suspicion of Brianna's murder
17:20Have been questioned by police
17:22The age of the suspects was completely shocking
17:23The mentality of a 15-year-old, to psychologically me, seeing it and do them things
17:29To a human being for nothing, is, like, mind blown to me
17:33We can't have 15-year-olds stabbing 16-year-olds in parts
17:37You know, you just can't comprehend that someone would do this
17:40Like, to be this young
17:42Upon both of their arrests, the police had a search warrant
17:48They treat both houses as crime scenes
17:51I don't think the police were ever expecting to find what they found in Scarlett's house
17:59When they searched her bedroom, they found this notebook on her desk
18:07Within that journal, she had analysed and written pages and pages
18:12Of really detailed descriptions of serial killers that she, in a way, idolised
18:19She noted their qualities and how they went about their killings
18:23The top there was Harold Shipman
18:28Geoffrey Dahmer was on the list
18:30It was an endless succession of the darkest characters in human history
18:37As police looked further through the notebook, they came across a really disgusting kill list
18:45Jenkinson had written quite clearly the names of five people that she wanted to see dead
18:52And Brianna's name was at the top of that list
18:55Police came across a scrumpled up piece of paper that was shoved under her bed
19:04It was headed victim, Brianna Jai
19:09This was a guide that had been designed by Scarlett
19:14For the pair of them to take Brianna's life
19:17The plan, very chillingly, I think
19:21Had a smiley face at the top
19:24Drawn by Scarlett
19:25Police go into Eddie's bedroom and they find a hunting knife
19:35And it was submitted for DNA profiling
19:38It later emerged that he had a fascination with knives
19:44Just a few weeks before Brianna was murdered, Eddie was away on a skiing trip in Bulgaria
19:48And he bought this knife that he brought back with him
19:57Scarlett and Eddie are both being questioned in different police stations
20:03There's options for suspects
20:06They're told they don't have to say anything
20:08Both of them, though, decided to talk
20:11Jenkinson claimed, again, that Brianna had ditched them
20:17That she'd gone off with a 17-year-old man from Manchester
20:23Scarlett was lying on the first call to the police
20:26And consistently lied all the way through
20:28He had his account straight away as graphic
20:33He must think that the police know he's at the scene
20:37And he must have to account for being with Scarlett
20:41So his tale is that he was there in the park
20:45His story was that he'd just popped behind a tree for a pee
20:52And then he heard these thuds and these sounds
20:56And as he came out, he saw Scarlett standing over Brianna's body
21:03He actually describes seeing Scarlett attacking Brianna with a knife
21:09And then he's panicked and run off with Scarlett
21:14You've got two accounts that are quite different
21:18And a really serious crime has occurred
21:21That is a real lead flag
21:22Two people have been arrested
21:27Beyond that, there's not much more we know
21:29She had her whole life ahead of her
21:32In the TikTok videos we'd seen, Brianna seemed quite outgoing
21:37But she struggled with her anxiety
21:40So it's one thing, you know, having the usual concerns
21:44That young people do when they're at school
21:46It's another thing to have mental health struggles
21:48And then on top of that, Brianna was also transitioning
21:52Which doesn't happen overnight
21:54In real life, she didn't really go out much
21:57Her room was her safe place, I think
22:00Brianna would speak to me privately as anyone would
22:03If you've got a friend and they're struggling
22:05Then they're going to talk to you
22:07Because of Brianna's, you know, difficulties
22:09She spent a lot of her time in this special inclusion unit
22:18These are designed to cater better for children who either have additional needs
22:24Or whether there is behaviour issues that need to be addressed
22:28Brianna was joined by Scarlett Jenkinson in that special unit
22:33The two bonded over make-up and their appearance
22:39Scarlett was in the inclusion unit because she was on what's called a managed move
22:45She was previously at a different high school
22:48Which she was suspended from
22:50This was the process, so she would spend time in this classroom
22:53Before going on to the wider environment
22:55What had led up to Scarlett being in the inclusion unit
22:59The first school that she was at, she had poisoned a more junior student by giving them sweets that had been laced with cannabis
23:12There may be a multitude of reasons why an alleged poisoning didn't result in a charge
23:21But perhaps this says something about Scarlett's character
23:27And about this sort of duality because her parents claim that they never saw this side of her
23:37Brianna wasn't aware of just how serious and how potentially dangerous Scarlett was
23:44She convinced Brianna that she was a friend
23:46The police have recovered Scarlett's phone, Eddie's phone, Brianna's phone
23:59And on those there are a large volume of communications between the parties involved
24:06There were many WhatsApp messages between Scarlett and Eddie in the months leading up to the attack
24:12It provided real insight into their minds and their thoughts
24:17It is unique
24:19A really sinister picture starts to emerge
24:21A boy at school is in a relationship with a girl who Eddie feels is somebody that he's attracted to
24:29It's just absolutely bizarre that they're talking about murdering someone
24:38They didn't carry the attack out but it demonstrated what the motivations were
24:43What the fantasies were, what the fantasies were
25:01It was evidence of their thirst to kill
25:04Over time it was clear that Jenkinson became quite fixed

27:06And I think about that still to this day
27:08You know I keep thinking if she was here she'd you know going with her
27:12You know I could have got her a ticket as well
27:14And yeah
27:17If you can please make it to Brianna's vigil tomorrow
27:23In the weeks after Brianna's death you saw a huge number of vigils
27:29And events to remember her
27:31I am seeing hundreds and hundreds of beautiful tributes for Brianna
27:39I want her to be remembered as Bri and not for this
27:42The whole trans community who feels shaken after this
27:45She was a larger than life character
27:47There was a transphobic element in this crime
27:54The trans community wanted to speak to that
27:57And make sure that Brianna's name was remembered
28:00And I want to begin by reminding you
28:09You must stay at home and save lives
28:12Scarlett Jenkinson spent a lot of lockdown in her bedroom
28:22But she was like no other teenager
28:25Many teenagers might have that fascination with the darker side of human nature
28:31But for Scarlett it was it was very different
28:35She was purposely going out of her way to look for harrowing distressing disturbing content
28:51And it's unbelievable that a young girl was watching this for hours in the privacy of her own bedroom
28:59There are a great many links between accessing extreme material and exhibiting extreme behaviour
29:09That's not to say that everybody who views gore online goes on to become a killer
29:17But there are certainly some people whose brains are wired differently
29:22And it switches something on inside of them
29:26You'd expect a friend to be horrified by the messages that she was sending
29:35But instead Ratcliffe was in a way encouraging her
29:39If those teenagers hadn't had such easy access to that extreme material buried away on the dark web
29:46It is quite possible that Brianna would still be alive today
29:51Scarlett's behaviour is escalating
30:09Scarlett has made her mind up
30:17That she's going to do something with Eddie
30:20They start to then develop this plan to do Brianna harm
30:34The initial plan to kill Brianna was make it look like she'd harmed herself
30:46Rather than someone else doing it
30:48It is very, very clear that it is Scarlett who has the whip hand here
30:53It is her who is leading Eddie
30:56But he's happy because for once he's got someone talking to him
31:00And being a friend
31:01Jenkinson lured Brianna out on the pretense that they could allegedly get high together
31:11They took these ibuprofen pills
31:14When Brianna got home later that day she was in agony, unbearable stomach pain
31:21Her mum Esther said that she'd never seen her or heard her in so much pain like this before
31:28She was violently sick and within the sick that you could see what looked like grape skins
31:37Which potentially could have been, you know, the casing of the pills that she had taken that day
31:42Scarlett was disappointed that it didn't work, she was still alive
31:47Ratcliffe research, you know, what would do the job to make sure that an overdose was fulfilled and that Brianna's life would end
32:02They converse about how can it work next time
32:10They have made their minds up that Brianna was going to die
32:27The first attempt through poisoning her it didn't work so they carried on
32:41There is again this sort of symbiotic relationship they're feeding off each other
32:47They're very dangerous individuals really intent on killing
32:55The police had gathered this huge amount of information and it shows how that day unfolded
33:03Brianna's downfall was a mirror of the plan they found in Scarlett's bedroom
33:10That note that police found under Scarlett's bed
33:16It reads meet Eddie at Wooden Potes at 1pm
33:21Walk down to library bus stop
33:25Eddie left his home and got a lift with his mum
33:30She knew that he was in a funny mood that morning
33:32He was snappy and that wasn't usual and she was trying to engage him in conversation
33:37But he was shutting her down
33:38I can't imagine the journey in that car, you know, what Ratcliffe would have been thinking
33:44Compared to what his mum would have been thinking that day
33:49Eddie's mum drops him off
33:51He then meets up with Scarlett and they're waiting for Brianna
33:59Brianna left home at 12.45pm messaging her mother as she did
34:04The dogs are locked up
34:08She gets on the bus
34:11And the bus driver told police that he remembered Brianna because she just looked so distinctive
34:18He remembers that she was looking down at her screen a lot and texting
34:26And this is a massive step for her, you know, she's really anxious, she doesn't go out very often
34:31It's all that any parents at that point all you want to do really is reassure them to say that it's all right and to go and have a good time
34:46Wait until Brianna gets off the bus
34:48She is greeted by Jenkinson
34:54You can also see Ratcliffe loitering in the background
34:59This is the first time that Eddie's ever properly met Brianna or been introduced to her
35:04And then the three of us walk to linear park
35:13Finally they disappear into the park then make their way towards the bench
35:28Scarlett goes off for 20 minutes
35:30That's a long time for Scarlett to leave Brianna on her own
35:34Particularly with somebody that she'd never met
35:41And there's no response
35:45And we can only imagine what was going on in Scarlett's mind at that point
35:52Maybe she was preparing herself for the attack that was going to come
36:00Shortly after she returned
36:04That horrific attack was carried out
36:11Some 10 minutes later the two dog walkers come along
36:16And disturb the two teenagers as they are standing over Brianna's body
36:30Two teenagers have gone on trial accused of murdering 16-year-old Brianna Jai
36:41Boy Y and girl X who can't be named because of their age are accused of stabbing Brianna to death
36:47in cultureth linear park in February
36:49I can't imagine what the families had to do listening to everything that happened to Brianna
36:55I can hope her family can get justice for her and I hope that they can recover from this as well
36:59I really hope that these pair of scumbags never see the light of day again
37:04So at this point there really is a mountain of evidence against them
37:08Both defendants in this case were charged jointly with the most serious offence known to the criminal law murder
37:15They had the opportunity at that point to plead guilty
37:21but instead they didn't instead they chose to go to trial to plead not guilty
37:30and to put Brianna's parents through 18 days of utterly unimaginable horror
37:38I can't imagine what their parents are going I can't I can't even think about what their parents are going through
37:43I chose to go with Peter every day that's not something he could have dealt with by himself
37:49I was there to support my son that's that's the reason I went just to be there for him
37:55There's days where I felt like I didn't want to go but I was doing it for Brianna
38:01she went through that
38:04what happened to her I had to be there for her
38:08the courtroom was extremely packed it was busy there was 40 plus journalists in another courtroom
38:18listening whilst I was given evidence I've never experienced that in my 20 plus years I was questioned with
38:27regards to the scientific findings the hunting knife that's found in Eddie's wardrobe in his bedroom
38:36DNA was found on the knife on the hilt of the blade in matching Brianna Jai
38:43and it was determined to be the murder weapon
38:47Now one of two teenagers accused of murdering Brianna Jai has blamed her co-accused
38:54The girl told the court that any talk of harming Brianna was just a fantasy
38:58at trial Scarlett changes her story her claim was that Eddie started stabbing Brianna that was just
39:08a shock to her because it was never meant to actually go ahead it was just something on paper
39:13in regards to Scarlett some of the things that she was saying was quite frustrating how she was trying
39:19to make out it was a fantasy all the time Eddie maintains his story that it was Scarlett
39:26who carried out the murder the crime is awful enough but then when it comes to facing the consequences
39:32they turned against each other at no point did they show any remorse for any moment that had led up to
39:40Brianna's death or the aftermath either it was very difficult to actually prove who had inflicted
39:47which below but for the purposes of proving murder against both the prosecution didn't need to show
39:55that that we were just needed to show that they'd acted together in bringing about the the outcome which they clearly did
40:13it took i think it was about four hours and the jury were back
40:17and it's like oh is that a good thing it's quick is it a bad thing it was Scarlett's name first
40:25and they said guilty and we there was just like a big relief from all of us
40:31and i remember i don't think she heard what had been said
40:35so they asked what it was and the judge said it's it's guilty and it was just there was no reaction
40:43she's just it was like oh okay type of thing they read out Eddie and again it was guilty
40:51the evidence that they were responsible for this offense was overwhelming
40:59i just i'm really angry about what they'd done and never forgive them never the monsters
41:08the teenage girl and boy who murdered the teenager brianna jai will be named up to now we've only been
41:15able to call them girl x and boy y because of their age they're both now 16. the names of the two
41:23monsters who murdered brianna jai scarlett jenkinson and eddie radcliffe at least now we can finally give
41:29brianna a little bit of justice i think it's the right decision completely
41:33scarlett jenkinson for the murder of brianna jai you will be detained at his majesty's pleasure
41:49i set the minimum term at 22 years justice yip provided a motive for the awful murder
41:56with jenkinson she was thirsty for blood it was being able to see that horrific stuff that is on
42:10the dark web that led her into a dark and wildly obsessive world her sadistic motivations had been revealed
42:21quite clearly in the whatsapp messages eddie radcliffe you will be detained at his majesty's pleasure
42:31i set the minimum term at 20 years i find also that you eddie were motivated in part by hostility
42:39towards brianna because she was transgender the judge in her summing up said that transphobia had been an element
42:46i'd love to know your thoughts guys do you think that their sentencing is right all i can say is 20 odd
42:54years is it's just no and off is it it's just never enough for taking a life personally in my own
43:03opinion i do think they should have life
43:05it's impossible to point to words on the murder of my child has affected me i never stopped loving
43:16her and i never will i knew she was going to be a star and the amount of support she received from
43:21followers on tiktok prove this and the amount of guilt i and the amount of guilt i have will sometimes be
43:28unbearable but i will ensure her memory lives on in my thoughts and dreams
43:37no amount of justice is going to bring her back for your mom and dad they've still got a life and
43:42brianna's life has gone
