00:01This program contains graphic content that may disturb some viewers,
00:05including coarse language and references to suicide.
00:31Alida de Joni.
00:46I'm sorry, I'm sorry!
00:51This program will help us warm up whenising this distance.
00:54Oh
01:16Chubo bai any magbolo all you boba yo mamura gidi
01:20Are you all scamming now?
01:37His name was Evan Betler.
01:39Have you ever heard of that case?
01:50A new word has hit the headlines, sextortion.
02:03Sextortion is the fastest growing scam affecting teenagers globally.
02:07Their aim, terrify children into handing over as much money as they can.
02:14Reports from around the world have begun warning of a spike in sextortion scams.
02:18Now, predominately targeting teenage boys in towns in Europe and North America.
02:25Towns like this one, Aurora, Missouri.
02:38Hey guys, welcome back to the vlog. It's Evan here.
02:43Oh yeah, there's my sister being weird.
02:46Say mom. Say hey, mom.
02:50Mom.
02:53This video really shows his personality.
02:57He was the kid that would wear anything.
03:00He wasn't concerned about what everybody else was wearing.
03:04It was kind of his own cat.
03:06I tested this out here with the top water, and I caught it all by myself.
03:12I'm so proud of myself.
03:15He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing.
03:21Tried all the sports.
03:24When people talk about sextortion, they are talking about this attack through social media.
03:35And what really turns your stomach here is that the classic target is a lad of 14, 15, 16.
03:42I don't come up a ton.
03:53Um, it's hard.
03:55Oh wow, it's virtually untouched.
04:05A lot of the stuff sitting around, like, these are things that would kind of showcase who he was,
04:09and we just haven't put them up.
04:12Everything's just kind of left.
04:13And are these awards that he won?
04:22Um, yeah, when he was, when he was little, he was in a, um...
04:27Little Mr. Hound Dog.
04:28Kind of a pageant, uh, for our local, uh, you know, they go on the parade and stuff like that.
04:34But that was his only, uh, trial at, uh, pageantry.
04:37He got his soccer, uh, award.
04:41Defensive rookie of the year, yeah.
04:43That was from his freshman year, playing soccer.
04:46He liked, uh, liked the slide tackle quite a bit.
04:49Uh, he was pretty slick at that.
04:54You see the things and they bring back, you know, good memories.
04:58Uh, but then at the same time,
05:00it reminds you of the loss.
05:04Yeah.
05:04I'm so sorry.
05:14Can you tell me what happened?
05:17That evening, you know, on January 3rd,
05:20it replays in my head all the time.
05:27It was, um...
05:29First day back after Christmas break.
05:30And it was getting dark and it was really cold.
05:37Our understanding is that this person contacted him on Snapchat.
05:41The user profile was a young girl, and Jenny T60 was the name.
06:00He decided to take a risk, I guess, you know, being a teenage boy.
06:03There was a photo that Evan had shared.
06:12I said, I'm ready to run your life unless you will comply with me.
06:25Evan had shared, and I said, I'm ready to ruin your life unless you will comply with me.
06:34And then it was just constant.
06:39And he told him he didn't have any money.
06:42And then it was just message after message of, you know, demands.
06:55They asked for his Facebook login, they asked for his Instagram login, they asked for his address, and he responded with, why are you going to kill me?
07:16He was terrified.
07:19He just had no idea why this person was doing this.
07:23It was continual harassment.
07:40It didn't give him any time to think, you know, it was nonstop.
07:44And then they asked for his Instagram login.
07:56And he said, I'm looking for it.
07:58That was his last response.
08:05From the first message was about an hour and a half, two hours.
08:08We came in up to the house and we were at the driveway and I got a text message and I looked at my phone and as I was reading the message, we heard the gunshot.
08:30And, um, was it a goodbye message?
08:36Um, yes.
08:38Yeah.
08:39Saying that, you know.
08:40How much he loved us.
08:41And that we were great parents and, um, he was sorry for what he was doing to us and said, you know, I hope I see you in heaven.
08:51And that was that.
08:57When they finally told us that night that he was gone, I just, it didn't, didn't make any sense.
09:04Like, I, I don't understand how this could happen to our family.
09:13It's an unexplainable, uh, feeling, uh, that you, you get when, when you know your kid's attacked like that.
09:20It's something that you'll live with for the rest of your life.
09:22The Bettlers want to identify the person who blackmailed Evan, but Mehta, who may hold information that could help, won't release it without a court order.
09:42Everything that I, I, I've read or looked at is that, you know, they're not going to share any information without having those court documents to, to force it, uh, on them.
09:52And as a parent, does that feel frustrating?
09:55It's infuriating.
09:57For a company to, uh, basically stalemate and try to protect the, the criminal, uh, is extremely frustrating.
10:07It's been over a year since Evan died and law enforcement in the U.S. appear to have made little progress, but there are some clues as to who might be responsible for Evan's death.
10:29At one point in the exchange, the scammer demanded Evan's Facebook login, presumably so they could message all of his contacts.
10:37When they logged into his account, they left a crucial piece of information, the IP address that connected them to the network.
10:44So all we have is the name of the Instagram account that targeted Evan and the IP address captured by him.
10:52I want to know what type of person would target a child in such a brutal scam.
10:57And looking at the IP address, it links back to multiple locations, all in Nigeria.
11:03But it most frequently links to the country's largest city, Lagos.
11:08According to researchers, a large number of scammers come from West Africa, specifically Nigeria.
11:16Nigeria.
11:17Nigeria.
11:18Nigeria.
11:19From these streets, criminals target children, trick, bully, blackmail them.
11:25We're talking about gangs operating against individual teenagers.
11:31Nigeria has become the leading country for cybercrime in Africa.
11:34A career path becoming so popular there that those who do it now have a name.
11:42They are Yahoo Boys.
11:46I'm in Lagos to try and better understand how Yahoo Boys operate and whether with the small amount of information we have,
11:54we can get close to working out which one targeted Evan.
11:57I've enlisted the help of Professor Adedeji Oyunuga, a criminologist and private investigator who has been studying Yahoo Boys for over 20 years.
12:12So this is the screenshot of what Meta sent to Evan once the scammer tried to log into his Facebook.
12:17You can see that they were using an FB light on Infinix S5 Pro.
12:24Yes, Infinix was among the cheapest phones in Nigeria.
12:29So this one is a poor young boy.
12:32So he's probably working in a group where he has a leader telling him what to do next.
12:38When a performance is new, you go to that place where they have mastered it.
12:50You get trained.
12:53There is an apprenticeship system where people are trained in the heart of cybercrime.
13:01They call it HK, Hustling Kingdom.
13:04Hustle Kingdoms, or scam centres, have started to appear across Nigeria,
13:12with organised criminals now running large-scale operations targeting victims en masse.
13:18Nigerian authorities have successfully raided many of these centres,
13:22but no journalist has ever filmed inside one.
13:28I've been told about a Hustle Kingdom in Mokoko,
13:31a floating settlement in Lagos and one of the poorest areas in the city.
13:38They've agreed to let me inside their illegal Hustle Kingdom,
13:42but with strict instructions, we do not reveal the specific location.
13:45Hi, Ghost, I'm here.
14:05Can you tell me what an HK is?
14:12Yeah, um, HK is a gathering of young boys.
14:16It's a gathering of people that are ready to change their financial status, yeah.
14:21What type of fraud do you do?
14:23We have so many frauds.
14:24Okay.
14:24And do all your boys do different types of scams,
14:27or are all of them specialising in one?
14:28Different types, because I don't believe in one.
14:31Are you scamming, or are you just managing them?
14:34I'm the boss of scamming.
14:36Do you understand?
14:37I'm taking 70, and I'm taking 30%.
14:39Okay.
14:41How much have you made so far?
14:42I would like to say I'm still in 1.4 million.
14:45More 1.4 million dollars right now.
14:47In your bank account?
14:49No, not my bank account.
14:50I'm making the wallet.
14:51Right.
14:52Yeah.
14:53That's a lot of money.
14:55Yeah, yeah, yeah.
14:55Gangster shit, man.
14:57Yeah.
14:57Yeah, yeah, yeah.
14:58Is that kind of what you guys think?
14:59Yeah, yeah, yeah.
15:00Is that what you think you are, gangsters?
15:01Yeah, yeah, yeah.
15:02No, actually, we're not gangsters.
15:04You're four stars.
15:06Yeah.
15:06Can you introduce me to your team?
15:10Okay.
15:12Hi, everyone.
15:19Are you all busy at work?
15:21Yeah, they're much busy.
15:23Yeah, they're much.
15:25As you're talking, I can hear a lot of messages going on.
15:28Are you all scamming now?
15:29They're busy at it.
15:31Have you heard of sextortion scams, otherwise known as BM?
15:39Yeah, BM.
15:40I don't do it.
15:41So I tell you why.
15:42Why?
15:42Because I'm a godfrey person.
15:45Some people, after BM, some people, like, the people that are blackmailing, you might kill
15:51yourself.
15:52Yeah, exactly.
15:53So I don't do it.
15:54I told my boys not to do it.
15:55What type of Yahoo boys do you think do blackmail scams?
15:59People that are blackouts.
16:03Even amongst Yahoo boys like Ghost, sextortion is a cause of shame, in part because of the
16:10consequences it can have.
16:13Reports from around the world now indicate that since 2019, there has been a year-on-year
16:18increase in suicides related to sextortion.
16:21After days of trying to find a sextortion scammer, I've made contact with a man in his early
16:3620s, going by the name Ola.
16:43He's been doing cybercrime since he was 14, and pivoted to sextortion in his late teens.
16:48I grew up in an area with some bros.
16:54They first teach me how to do romance scam, then we went into blackmailing.
17:01Can you tell me a bit about that?
17:02So we open a social media account using female names from fake name generators.
17:10I'm sure, for instance, it's a site where they get names of people in any country you want.
17:18So, at the moment, you put female, American, United States.
17:26Then you click on generate.
17:28Suscarity number is not complete, but it gives you the effect phone number, the country code,
17:34these are births, age.
17:36OK.
17:37But what about the profile picture?
17:39It's just a normal-looking girl.
17:41Where do you get those from?
17:42From models.
17:44Then we go on their social media profile, download their pictures.
17:48They will download their nudes also.
17:51Mostly, once we get the victim, we confuse them, like, being friends or dating together.
17:57Then we ask them for their nude pictures.
17:59And what social media platforms are you using?
18:02Facebook dating and Instagram.
18:05OK.
18:06And Snapchat, Snapchat especially.
18:08Mm-hmm.
18:09I guess young kids, though, use Snapchat mostly.
18:12Are you targeting young kids?
18:14We target young kids also.
18:15Why do you target young boys?
18:17Because the sex drive is too high.
18:23And young guys are scared of the picture being released to their class groups, their parents
18:29and their friends.
18:30So you're saying you target young boys because they'll be more scared?
18:33Yes.
18:36OK.
18:36Sounds pretty brutal, pretty ruthless.
18:39I have to face whatever has come in my way for me to make them money.
18:44When you find your targets, how do you know what to say to them?
18:48So I do copy and paste it to them.
18:51OK.
18:51So there's, like, a format or text that you send them.
18:53Yes.
18:54Can I see?
18:58I just lay on the bed naked and money right now, lol.
19:03Will you help me out?
19:05I want to stand at the front of my rear and take a mirror snap on her.
19:10I want to make my get squirt, just stand at the front of the mirror and take a mirror snap,
19:15babe, holding your d***.
19:16OK.
19:17So it's quite explicit, the messages that you send them.
19:21Yes.
19:23What's the saying?
19:24You send this to them.
19:26I'm going to post your pics all over.
19:29I have a family member and friends.
19:31And I'm going to make a news of your shit right now.
19:35That's when we go into the editing part.
19:37This video application.
19:41OK.
19:41Using generating pic.
19:43Breaking news video maker.
19:45Yes.
19:46So you make it into a news headline?
19:48Yes.
19:50That is, like, try to harass my sexuality by sending me his nude pictures.
19:55Sounds like this.
19:59Oh, God.
20:00This is the victim over here.
20:06I will have editing down.
20:08So by the time I will be like, if you refuse to give me, let me say, $200, that I will post
20:16the picture to his work office or his school, once he complete the amounts you agreed, you
20:22can still tell them I'm not satisfied with the amount you paid.
20:25So I need just the amount again.
20:27If you tell them $4,000, if you don't have the money in full, you can pay the money weekly.
20:32It sounds like you're pretty ruthless.
20:35You carry on for a long period of time.
20:37In many cases, that could ruin someone's life.
20:42Why?
20:43Because I need the money.
20:45I've been suffering for a lot of time, so I don't care if anyone is suffering.
20:50Have you heard about the cases where kids are committing suicide?
20:54No, I don't make men commit suicide.
20:56How do you know, though?
20:57I don't think so.
21:06I think they're scared.
21:08They're not scared as far as they have the money.
21:12But what if they can't pay?
21:13What if they don't have the money to do it?
21:15Yeah, I do kind of entertain them because most of them do lie.
21:18They don't have money.
21:19Killers could go get money from their families.
21:23I do make sure those money they're using, going for shows, getting new things as the quality
21:26person.
21:29To Ola, it's hard to believe that an American kid wouldn't have money.
21:34If they say no, he assumes they're lying.
21:37That mindset, I think, explains why some scammers feel little empathy for their victims.
21:42To people like Ola, just being born in America or Europe means you've had an easy life.
21:48So why feel sorry for them?
21:56Our only solid lead in tracking down Evan's blackmailer is the IP address linked to them.
22:03Its location traces back to several areas in Nigeria.
22:07But most frequently, it links here to Lagos Island.
22:10I'm hoping Professor Adedeji can help us use this IP address to pinpoint a more specific
22:17location.
22:21Lagos Island is, I would have said slum, but it's one of the most highly concentrated area
22:27of Lagos State.
22:29It's not a place I'd like to come to because you have to be very smart to survive on the
22:33island.
22:33Why is it not a place you'd like to come to?
22:37It's not really very safe.
22:38OK.
22:47So this is one of the locations that links to the IP address?
22:50Yes, one of the locations.
22:51The blackmailer's IP address traces back to Glowworld, Nigeria's second largest telecom
23:03provider.
23:04By law, companies like Glowworld must keep user records for at least two years in a bid
23:09to combat cybercrime.
23:11So they should have the information we need.
23:15I reached out to them and they agreed to help.
23:17But only if Nigerian authorities officially request the release of the information.
23:24So I handed over everything I had on Evan Bettler to the Nigerian police.
23:29And now, for the first time since his death, an official investigation is underway here.
23:39Hi both, how are you?
23:42Hello, how are you?
23:43How are you?
23:43How are you?
23:44For the Bettlers, the confirmation of this open investigation is the first significant
23:51update in over a year.
23:53To be honest, I am overwhelmed, as you can tell with Kerry.
24:02Just, we've waited for, you know, over a year's time to get some information like this and
24:10to know that somebody is fighting for Evan.
24:14Yeah, as I said, we've been thinking about you a lot.
24:16And I understand how this information is quite overwhelming.
24:20But, yeah.
24:22It's good.
24:23I mean, it's a lead, like, it's hopeful because we've been just left hanging and no hope,
24:32kind of.
24:33So this gives us a little bit of hope.
24:35So.
24:35As the weeks went on, our communications with the police and Glow World made it clear
24:47that things move slowly in Nigeria.
24:50Still, they assured us the case was active.
24:52Ade is 20 years old and recently began sextorting victims in the West.
25:11He's having trouble with a client and has arranged a meeting with a local priest who has developed
25:17a ritual that he claims will help him.
25:22They said, yeah, we are going to the tent, but never make him feel like he's playing.
25:32We're going to the bus now.
25:33We're going to the bus now and speak.
25:34We're going to the bus now and take it off.
25:38No.
25:41What do you think?
25:42You've found that here?
25:44I'm going to the bus now.
25:46You can't see here?
25:47You can't see what the bus now is.
25:49I can't see the bus now.
25:50Soファーアークゼヤウィティレダイ?

26:21Yeah.
26:22Mm, we got a job here.
26:24Then I started talking to people,
26:26and I started talking to them,
26:28and my knowledge is here.
26:30This person's relationship,
26:31and I started talking to people.
26:34Mm, mm.
26:37My son.
26:38My son, I was talking to you again,
26:40and I stayed at home,
26:42and I lived there.
26:44My son is coming together.
26:46You could say that?
26:47I've got 20,000 people here.
26:56How are you?
26:59What's your name?
27:01I'm sorry.
27:02I'm sorry.
27:04I'm sorry.
27:06I've got a lot of people here.
27:08I've got a lot of people here.
27:11I've got a lot of people here.
27:13That's their own land.
27:15A million, a billion of people that don't have liked it.
27:20They don't want to go get what I do to go.
27:25They want to come home and stay.
27:27They want to come home and they don't want to go.
27:34But the one thing is that they don't want to be very happy.

28:11While they prepare the bird for ADIAYA to eat, I want to know if what he's doing here is a common practice.
28:17How often do Yahoo boys come to you for money rituals?
28:25Wow, that seems like a lot.
28:31Now that that ritual's done, do you think that his client will pay him?
28:38I'm not sure if he's enjoying it.
28:50How often do I have to go to the forest?
29:05Doesn't look like he's enjoying it.
29:08The ritual itself was disturbing.
29:38But what struck me even more was how these Yahoo boys, like Ade, are taught to see themselves as snakes, masters of camouflage, blending in until the moment they strike.
29:52That's exactly what happened to Evan.
29:55His attacker hid behind a fake identity, slowly gaining his trust until Evan was manipulated into sending a nude photo.
30:03These are predators that hunt on social media.
30:09For Evan, the trap was set on Snapchat.
30:15Another young sextortion scammer I've made contact with specialises in finding victims on the app.
30:21The way I find them, I just go on Instagram, look for people that are not a Nigerian, like Australia, UK or US, go through their profile.
30:30You look for rich guys, you don't look for poor guys because they will not be able to give you anything.
30:36This one will not have money.
30:38Go on Snapchat, add them.
30:39Once you add back, all these friends from Snapchat will show there.
30:40Then I start to add all of them.
30:41I send them a text.
30:42And how many people are you targeting?
30:43daily?
30:44I have no limit.
30:49be able to give you anything. This one will not have money. Go on Snapchat, add him. Once
30:56he add back, all his friends from Snapchat will show there. Then I start to add all of
31:02them. I send them a text. And how many people are you targeting daily?
31:11I have no limit. No limit? You don't stop?
31:14Whoever replies, you ask them, are you into something naughty? Can we get into something
31:21naughty? Then you ask them to send you on to no screenshots. When you say do no screenshots,
31:27if you screenshot on Snapchat, I would know.
31:30So do you use Snapchat to make them feel safer for sending a nude because they know it can't
31:33be screenshotted?
31:35Yeah, yeah. Because of the privacy on Snapchat. Once you screenshot it, the person will be
31:39notificated. So Snapchat helps you in a way?
31:44He does not have any idea I have a second phone. Once the thing is, I take the second phone,
31:51start snapping it. That's where I start to begin starting the money.
32:01It seems the very features that Snapchat designed to supposedly make the platform safer for young
32:07people are actually being exploited by these scammers to make their victims feel safer.
32:13But Temi also told me about other, more sophisticated methods they use to make their victims feel safe when
32:20they want to go beyond messages and have a video call.
32:22We move into our laptops with some software and then connect it to my phone to actually look like a video calling with the person.
32:34Are we talking? I'll be the one talking. But you will see the girl's face.
32:39Right. But their mouth wouldn't be moving.
32:41The mouth will be moving.
32:42It will be moving.
32:43Yeah.
32:43So are you using AI or deepfakes, or are you using pre-recorded videos?
32:48It's not pre-recorded. I just need the picture of the girl.
32:55I've heard reports of Yahoo boys using AI in sextortion scams, but no one has ever filmed it being used first hand.
33:04So what is this?
33:07It's an AI cleaning app for the face. I use this to talk to them.
33:12Where did you get the picture of this woman from?
33:16That is from Instagram.
33:18From Instagram?
33:19Yeah.
33:20You use Rachel to pretend that it's a woman.
33:24Hey baby. How are you doing?
33:27Oh wow. I didn't expect it to be that realistic.
33:31Well, if you want to be able to scam, you have to go multiple ways without any mistake.
33:37And this is just the first face.
33:41You want to make video call.
33:44Okay.
33:44Then you start virtual camera.
33:48Let me call somebody.
34:00Wow.
34:01How much does this app cost?
34:08This app costs about $3 million in a year.
34:13Okay.
34:14To be able to set everything up, $5 million.
34:17So that's $3,500?
34:20Yeah.
34:20That's expensive?
34:21Yeah, yeah.
34:23Can you use this on apps like Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook?
34:27Yeah.
34:28Okay.
34:28So it's compatible with all of those different social media platforms?
34:32Yeah.
34:33Having this is a very good opportunity to bag plenty money.
34:38Because someone will actually believe what they see and what you see.
34:42Mm-hmm.
34:44Imagine I'm texting you and the next thing, you do not request for video call.
34:48I'm the one that requests for video call.
34:50It makes it very believable.
34:51Yeah.
34:52From what I've seen in my time in Nigeria, sextortion is growing in popularity amongst
35:08young Yahoo boys like Temi.
35:09Everyone told me it would be hard to find a Yahoo boy who does sextortion.
35:18But with each day I spend here, I discover more and more.
35:22The crime is clearly growing.
35:25The FBI announced that the number of sextortion cases reported to them have more than doubled
35:30in the last three years, reaching a high of 55,000 in 2024.
35:35At least 20 of these cases have ended in the same heartbreaking way as Evan Bettler's.
35:49Companies like Snapchat and Meta are increasingly being put under pressure by victims and lawmakers
35:55about the growing number of sextortion cases happening on their platforms.
35:59Do you affirm the testimony you're about to give before the committee will be the truth,
36:02the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?
36:06Critics say platforms could take action, like making friends less private,
36:11but they're unwilling to act because it would harm profits.
36:18We are on the side of parents everywhere working hard to raise their kids.
36:21I reached out to Meta to see if they would share additional information relating to Evan's case
36:39with me and the Bettlers.
36:41They declined, citing privacy concerns.
36:44Being a parent is one of the hardest jobs in the world.
36:49So we work hard to provide parents and teens support and controls to reduce potential harms.
36:55And it's important to me that our services are positive for everyone who uses them.
37:00The Section 230, the old laws, let them have that security and not being charged with anything.
37:08So, yeah, it's very infuriating.
37:10Section 230 states that companies like Meta and Snapchat shouldn't be treated as publishers
37:17and therefore aren't responsible for what they use as post.
37:22So, Meta and Snapchat, when they sent the subpoenas at first,
37:27they just came back with blanket information,
37:29the same information that we got when we downloaded his user account.
37:33Snapchat was not willing to really give anything.
37:37Meta gave them a little bit more information than Snapchat did.
37:40So you didn't actually get much information from them?
37:43No, not, you know, just timestamps, which were already on the messages anyway.
37:49So releasing that information, I think they choose to be tight with it
37:53so as to not be held liable for anything.
37:57While Meta wouldn't share additional information relating to Evan's case,
38:05they did tell me that the account that blackmailed Evan was flagged as fake by them in January of 2024,
38:11the same month that Evan took his own life, and the account was subsequently removed.
38:17However, they wouldn't specify when in January the account was detected as fake,
38:22or whether it was flagged before the account interacted with Evan.
38:26We'll never know if they could have stopped it.
38:30While the blackmail took place on Instagram,
38:33Evan was initially tricked into sending a nude image on Snapchat.
38:37When we contacted Snapchat,
38:39they too refused to provide any details, citing privacy concerns.
38:44It seems the social media companies don't want to share information with bereaved parents,
38:52journalists, or without a court-approved subpoena, even law enforcement.
38:58All hopes of finding the man who caused Evan's death now rest on Glow World.
39:04Would they provide us with the phone number that had been used to target him?
39:08I finally receive an update.
39:12Even though they're supposed to keep user information for two years,
39:16they had failed to do so in this case.
39:19They blamed the type of IP address.
39:23There was no phone number.
39:26The trail's gone cold.
39:30PHONE RINGS
39:31Hi, guys. How are you?
39:34Good. How are you?
39:35Good, thank you. It's nice to see your faces.
39:39You as well.
39:41So, the first thing is that,
39:43after a lot of back and forth with Glow World,
39:45they've actually told us that,
39:47even though cybercrime law states
39:49that they should have the information for two years,
39:51they no longer have the information
39:54which is linking to the IP address.
39:56So, we've been unable to get the phone number.
39:59I was really hoping that I would be able to give you
40:01some better information,
40:04and I am sorry for that.
40:05It's a little disheartening.
40:08You know,
40:09my heart still says that
40:11the information is someplace
40:13to be able to connect the number
40:15or the account
40:16together somehow.
40:19Meta probably has that
40:21capability,
40:23but, you know,
40:24they're likely not going to turn loose of it either.
40:26I feel like the longer it is,
40:29like, the farther off it is,
40:31you know,
40:31as an obtainable thing.
40:34You know,
40:35like,
40:35we just keep chasing after something
40:37that gets farther and farther away.
40:40Yeah.
40:40Yeah.
40:41Just know with Meta
40:43and, you know,
40:44the laws that really protect them,
40:46it makes it almost impossible.
40:48Yeah.
40:49Thank you for all you guys are doing.
40:50We'll keep in touch.
40:51Now, guys,
40:56I'm fishing with a spinnerbait.
40:58It's a little trailer.
40:59Look here.
41:00It's kind of windy,
41:01so I figured I would just try this out for a little bit.
41:05I'd say he's probably pre-teen right there,
41:15and he's fishing an open-faced reel.
41:19He picked it up and, you know,
41:20threw it just as well as anybody that I've seen.
41:25You know,
41:26from a young age,
41:26he really dreamed about being a professional fisherman.
41:31He always was excited about fishing.
41:35Who caught that?
41:36You or Dad?
41:36Me here.
41:37He didn't catch anything.
41:40His smile.
41:41He had the greatest smile,
41:42and he was always happiest
41:45when showing off his catches.
41:47It's our first two fish in the morning!
41:51And that was kind of a start
41:53of his love for fishing
41:55when we went to Rowing River.
42:05Since I've been back from Nigeria,
42:09I find myself constantly thinking
42:11about the young men out there
42:13getting into sextortion,
42:15interacting with their victims
42:16only through screens.
42:19They seem so detached,
42:21threatening to destroy lives
42:23for just a few hundred dollars.
42:25The real cost,
42:26especially in cases like Evans,
42:28is immeasurable.
42:28Where are we going?
42:45Down this direction.
42:46I haven't done this for a while.
42:55When was the last time you came here?
42:59Last time I was here
43:01was probably about a year and a half ago.
43:03I couldn't even begin
43:09to put a number
43:10on the amount of hours
43:11that we spent
43:14in a boat
43:16or in a river
43:19sharing that time.
43:27You know, even last night,
43:28like, getting stuff together,
43:29you stand in the garage,
43:31which, you know,
43:32everything, like,
43:36everything around
43:37has a connection.
43:39Sorry, it must be really hard
43:41for you coming here.
43:42It is.
43:44Just being at the water
43:45was a place that he loved it.
43:49He was an amazing kid.
43:51You know, it wasn't hard
43:53to parent him
43:53because it was in his nature
43:55to be a good person.
43:58He loved people,
44:00loved the outdoors,
44:01loved his friends,
44:03loved his family.
44:06And I know that he loved me.
44:10And I couldn't even put into words
44:13how much I loved him.
44:15He loved the outdoors.
44:41He loved the outdoors,
