00:00:19For the last five years, drivers have gone head-to-head, racing for an individual championship.

00:00:38We have eight teams, led by eight captains.

00:00:44This is no prep like you've never seen it before.

00:00:47The racing is more intense.

00:00:49Everything that we're used to is no longer.

00:01:28We're going to have a driver's meeting starting off this wonderful day here at Virginia Motorsports Park.

00:01:34Today is our first 32-car invitational where racers can earn points for their team.

00:01:39Ten points per round.

00:01:40The further you go, the more points you get.

00:01:42We're the only team to have all five of us make it in.

00:01:48And that's, man, that says something.

00:01:50Since there are 40 racers on teams and only 32 spots in the invitational, that means not everyone's going to get to compete.

00:01:57Obviously, the more racers a team has in, the better chance they have to pull ahead.

00:02:03Today, invitational points.

00:02:07There is zero ducks in this deal.

00:02:09Like, everybody's fast.

00:02:1420 racers that won in our qualifier last week were guaranteed a spot this week.

00:02:19Then, everyone else had to race for the final 12 spots.

00:02:22And there were some surprises.

00:02:25Team captain Bodie was having car problems and couldn't even make it to his race.

00:02:29And Jerry Bird, the number one draft pick overall, lost to Rich Bruder, which means he is not racing in the invitational here in Virginia.

00:02:39It's just depressing because I feel like you picked me first and I'm kind of letting y'all down because I ain't shining like I should.

00:02:45Well, you got the new car.

00:02:47We all know how you run.

00:02:48It's a good thing is that you guys never say quit.

00:02:54I mean, I'm probably, I'm going to wear the car out in the first two races.

00:02:57But despite these surprises, the final 32-car lineup is a strong one.

00:03:03Team captains Disco Dean, Mike Murillo, and Justin Swanstrom were all able to race their way in.

00:03:10That means that all the team captains except Bodie will be racing tonight.

00:03:13One of the issues that we see with Birdman's car, again, it's nothing to do with the car.

00:03:27It's all to do with his car, and his car hasn't been doing good.

00:03:32So, I hate to bring this up.

00:04:38Birdman got a win in the qualifier, but the only reason he got a win is because his opponent broke.

00:04:46Birdman has to get out of it by the 60 foot.

00:04:49And in testing, he only made it 60 feet.

00:04:52He didn't even make it 60 feet.

00:04:55Birdman has issues there on the hit and has to get out of it just past the 60 foot cone.

00:05:03So, it's my duty as a team captain to make a choice whether I should drop Birdman down, pull somebody else up,

00:05:09but I just don't know how Birdman's going to take that.

00:05:11Where do you feel like you are right now as far as making the trip this first round?

00:05:19So, what we wanted to do, but wanted to talk to you first and see how you felt about yours, is possibly pull Dominator,

00:05:28or if you are adamant that you guys think that you're okay.

00:05:34We have T-minus less than 10 minutes to pull Doc, Dominator, Docker Dominator basically.

00:07:51You got to see Ryan Martin win that race last night.

00:07:57Today, a little different.

00:07:59So, all these drivers are on their respective teams.

00:08:03And also, we've had our first substitution of the season.

00:08:08There is a reserve pool that you can pull drivers from.

00:08:12And one team has elected to do that.

00:08:16Team Mike Murillo has pulled from the reserve pool.

00:08:21They have sent Birdman down to the reserve pool.

00:08:25It has brought up Dominator.

00:08:27Dominator is now on Team Mike Murillo.

00:08:30Yeah.

00:08:32Murillo picking up Dominator.

00:08:34And it just blows my mind.

00:08:36I just don't understand.

00:08:37He wasn't even at the last race.

00:08:39So, for Murillo to not even come over and talk to me about it, give me the opportunity,

00:08:45So, I'm going to go on record in saying that if Murillo needs me later in the year,

00:08:49my answer would be, hell no.

00:08:52So, we're going to move into the chip draw now.

00:08:57There's some great match-ups heading into the first round of racing today.

00:09:05And three sets of teammates drew each other.

00:09:08Mike Murillo and Scott Taylor, Ryan and Robin Roberts, and Lizzie versus Chris Rankin from

00:09:13Kai's team.

00:09:14They do have the option to trade chips to break those matches up, but it's the first points

00:09:18race, so there might be a different strategy.

00:09:29So, we have three teams that have drawn their teammates for a race.

00:09:47However, I always look at things from the big picture.

00:09:51So, any other way, it's a possibility that he could go out and I could go out.

00:09:59So, the good thing about it is, one of us is moving on and we start accruing some more

00:11:39But these team captains want to start the season off right with the win get ahead.

00:11:44We're here at Virginia Motorsports Park, going to kick off the first round of our invitational event.

00:11:53It's all about going rounds and earning points for your team.

00:12:17Everybody knows it's my favorite track.

00:12:19I won MPK the last two years in a row.

00:12:21Plan on making it a three-peat.

00:12:22It's the first invitational race that we can actually start getting some points.

00:12:26I drew Marty Robinson.

00:12:27I don't really know a lot about him.

00:12:28I just know he's got a nice hot rod and he's got some really nice parts.

00:12:31And I've seen him making good passes.

00:12:33I haven't had a chance to run beside him yet, but here I am.

00:12:35I drew first pair down the track, and I'm going to get to see firsthand how fast he really is.

00:12:41So, you were chasing that Grindling we had with the wiring.

00:12:46One of the wires is actually kind of loose, so that fly was intermittently trying to shift and not shift.

00:12:50So, Marty Robinson drew last night's runner-up in the Great Eight, Kai Kelly.

00:12:56It's not a match-up you want first round in the invitation.

00:12:59Maybe turning the power down a little bit will help us get that shake out of there,

00:13:02and we can not be chasing broken wires.

00:13:05So, we've just come back from round one, chip draw, drew Kai Kelly ball people.

00:13:09We've been chasing this Grimlin in the transmission that we found out last night.

00:13:12The car didn't even shift out of first gear.

00:13:14So, luckily, after chasing it for hours this morning, we found the wiring issue.

00:13:18Wire came loose out of the computer, got it all fixed.

00:13:21The car's shifting now, so I feel pretty good about this next run coming up for the Invitational.

00:18:16I only had four going into the invitation one day, and now two of us has drawn each other.

00:18:20Ryan and Robin also drew each other, and they just wanted to swap.

00:18:23But my team, we decided that we would rather race each other so we could for sure have one

00:18:27person moving to the next round.

00:18:28That'll give us more points.

00:18:29It's all about the points.

00:18:31If we would have raced both of them and they'd have beat both of us, we'd have had no points,

00:18:34then they would have had 20.

00:18:35It's all about strategy here.

00:18:36We're trying to get to that number one goal, the team with the most points.

00:18:53Next pair, we've got Chris Rankin in the right lane going up against Lizzie Musi in that left lane.

00:19:04And Lizzie Musi gets the win.

00:19:26As soon as the light turned green, I left, and I saw him for a little bit, then I didn't

00:19:34see him anymore.

00:19:35Apparently, he had problems again, and my car made a nice, clean pass, got there first,

00:19:39and got the win.

00:19:40So, I was happy with that.

00:19:43We're moving on to the second round.

00:19:46This is a big race for Team Bodie here.

00:19:52Nate Saylor was Bodie's top pick in the draft, so he is counting on him to deliver a ton of

00:19:58round wins and a lot of points this season.

00:20:01All right, next pair coming at you right here are going to be Kyle Cannon over there in the

00:20:04right lane going up against Nate Saylor in the left.

00:20:11This is the first for the points.

00:20:12This is my first race ever in the Invitational today.

00:20:15I'm pretty excited, pretty anxious.

00:20:19It's all going to be really dependent on me.

00:21:26but also the team championship points.

00:21:29The more rounds we go, the more points we accumulate.

00:21:32We need to stay ahead and gain points to win this championship.

00:21:47He had some suspension problems.

00:21:57and all we need them to do is make good, consistent passes,

00:22:01and we're gonna be all right.
