00:00:09Where drivers race down an eighth mile track at speeds nearing 200 miles per hour.

00:00:16One mistake here, you're going home.

00:00:19For the last five years, drivers have gone head-to-head, racing for an individual championship.

00:00:35But this year, we're doing something we've never done before.

00:00:38We have eight teams, led by eight captains.

00:00:44This is no prep like you've never seen it before.

00:00:47The racing is more intense.

00:00:49Everything that we're used to is no longer.

00:00:53You got the money. That's the most important part.

00:00:56And winnings are bigger than ever.

00:00:58Game on, baby.

00:01:17Virginia Motorsports Park, how y'all doing today?

00:01:28We're going to have a driver's meeting starting off this wonderful day here at Virginia Motorsports Park.

00:01:34Today is our first 32-car invitational where racers can earn points for their team.

00:01:39Ten points per round.

00:01:40The further you go, the more points you get.

00:01:42We're the only team to have all five of us make it in.

00:01:48And that's, man, that says something.

00:01:50Since there are 40 racers on teams and only 32 spots in the invitational, that means not everyone's going to get to compete.

00:01:57Obviously, the more racers a team has in, the better chance they have to pull ahead.

00:02:03Today, invitational points.

00:02:06Yes.

00:02:06$40,000.

00:02:07There are zero ducks in this deal.

00:02:09Like, everybody's fast.

00:02:11Very fast.

00:02:12This field is insane.

00:02:13Everybody.

00:02:1420 racers that won in our qualifier last week were guaranteed a spot this week.

00:02:19Then, everyone else had to race for the final 12 spots.

00:02:22And there were some surprises.

00:02:25Team captain Bodie was having car problems and couldn't even make it to his race.

00:02:29And Jerry Bird, the number one draft pick overall, lost to Rich Bruder, which means he is not racing in the invitational here in Virginia.

00:02:39It's just depressing because I feel like you picked me first and I'm kind of letting y'all down because I ain't shining like I should.

00:02:45Well, you got the new car.

00:02:46You got the new car blues.

00:02:47We all know how you run.

00:02:48The good thing is that you guys never say quit, and that's what it takes.

00:02:51Yeah, we're not quitting.

00:02:51Like I said, I've been, since last week, we've been just at it.

00:02:54I mean, I'm probably, I'm going to wear the car out in the first two races.

00:02:57But despite these surprises, the final 32-car lineup is a strong one.

00:03:03Team captains Disco Dean, Mike Murillo, and Justin Swanstrom were all able to race their way in.

00:03:10That means that all the team captains except Bodie will be racing tonight.

00:03:13Four out of five of us that are in?

00:03:28Yep.

00:03:29That's not too bad.

00:03:29So that's not bad at all.

00:03:30That may be the second best?

00:03:38One of the issues that we see with Birdman's car, again, it's nothing to do with Birdman as a driver.

00:03:45It's all to do with his car, and his car hasn't been doing good.

00:03:48So, I hate to bring this up.

00:03:52He hasn't made the trip.

00:03:54Can we put somebody in that has made the trip in his spot?

00:03:57The only reason I say that is because I just don't see any sign of improvement just yet.

00:04:02I know it's coming, but I'm just trying to look for help for our team.

00:04:19This is the year that we're doing team championships.

00:04:22So, team captains get to choose who's going to be on their team, and before each race,

00:04:26we can make a trade or we can drop someone down and pick somebody up from the pool.

00:04:30But that's something I have to think about when it comes to Birdman.

00:04:38Birdman got a win in the qualifier, but the only reason he got a win is because his opponent broke.

00:04:46Birdman has to get out of it by the 60 foot.

00:04:49And in testing, he only made it 60 feet.

00:04:52He didn't even make it 60 feet.

00:04:58Birdman has issues there on the hit.

00:05:00He has to get out of it just past the 60 foot cone.

00:05:03So, it's my duty as a team captain to make a choice whether I should drop Birdman down,

00:05:08pull somebody else up, but I just don't know how Birdman's going to take that.

00:05:13Where do you feel that you are right now as far as making the trip this first round?

00:05:19Not.

00:05:19So, what we wanted to do, but wanted to talk to you first and see how you felt about yours,

00:05:26is possibly pull Dominator, or if you are adamant that you guys think that you're okay.

00:05:33I'm 50-50 on it.

00:05:34We have T-minus less than 10 minutes to pull Doc, Dominator, Docker Dominator, basically.

00:05:42I don't know where I stand on it, I really don't.

00:05:44I don't know that Docker Dominator could do anything for us, but do whatever you want to do.

00:05:50It's up to you, you're the captain.

00:05:51I know, but that's not how this works, you know how that is.

00:08:08There is a reserve pool that you can pull drivers from, and one team has elected to do that.

00:08:16Team Mike Murillo has pulled from the reserve pool.

00:08:21They have sent Birdman down to the reserve pool.

00:08:25It has brought up Dominator.

00:08:27Dominator is now on Team Murillo.

00:08:30Yeah.

00:08:32Murillo picking up Dominator, and it just blows my mind.

00:08:36I just don't understand.

00:08:37He wasn't even at the last race.

00:08:39So, for Murillo to not even come over and talk to me about it, give me the opportunity,

00:08:44huge kick in the s***.

00:08:45So, I'm going to go on record in saying that if Murillo needs me later in the year,

00:08:49my answer would be, hell no.

00:08:52So, we're going to move into the chip draw now.

00:09:02There's some great matchups heading into the first round of racing today.

00:09:05And three sets of teammates drew each other.

00:09:08Mike Murillo and Scott Taylor, Ryan and Robin Roberts, and Lizzie versus Chris Rankin from Kai's team.

00:09:14They do have the option to trade chips to break those matches up, but it's the first points race,

00:09:18so there might be a different strategy.

00:09:27Well, you're first in line.

00:09:28That's great.

00:09:29So, we have three teams that have drawn their teammates for a race.

00:09:35I would like for Scooter and Mike to swap with us if they would like to.

00:09:40Scott and I drew each other first round.

00:09:43So, it's not an ideal situation.

00:09:45You don't want to race your teammates.

00:09:47However, I always look at things from the big picture.

00:09:51So, any other way, it's a possibility that he could go out and I could go out.

00:09:55Neither one of us are accomplishing anything.

00:09:57We're not getting any points from the team.

00:09:59So, the good thing about it is, one of us is moving on,

00:10:03and we start accruing some more of those team points that we need.

00:10:12You know, I was kind of thinking that since we were the first two to draw each other,

00:11:32going all the way to the finals, where the winner will earn 60 points.

00:11:36That's a whole lot of points to accumulate throughout the season.

00:12:17Everybody knows it's my favorite track.

00:12:19I won MPK the last two years in a row,

00:12:21plan on making it a three-peat.

00:12:22It's the first invitational race

00:12:24that we can actually start getting some points.

00:12:26I drew Marty Robinson.

00:12:27I don't really know a lot about him.

00:12:28I just know he's got a nice hot rod,

00:12:30and he's got some really nice parts,

00:12:31and I've seen him making good passes.

00:12:33I haven't had a chance to run beside him yet,

00:12:34but here I am.

00:12:36I drew first pair down the track,

00:12:37and I'm going to get to see firsthand how fast he really is.

00:12:41So you were chasing that gremlin we had with the wiring.

00:12:46One of the wires actually kind of loose,

00:12:48so that's why I was intermittently trying to ship and not ship.

00:12:50So Marty Robinson drew last night's runner-up

00:12:54in the Great Eight, Kai Kelly.

00:12:56It's not a match-up you want first round in the invitation.

00:12:59Maybe turning the power down a little bit

00:13:00will help us get that shake out of there,

00:13:02and we can not be chasing broken wires.

00:13:09We've been chasing this gremlin in the transmission.

00:13:11We found out last night the car

00:13:13didn't even ship out of first gear,

00:13:14so luckily after chasing it for hours this morning,

00:13:17we found the wiring issue.

00:13:19Wire came loose out of the computer, got it all fixed.

00:13:21The car's shifting now,

00:13:22so I feel pretty good about this next run

00:13:24coming up with the Invitational.

00:13:30First round coming at you right now over the left lane.

00:18:09Last year, I was drawing teammates left and right.

00:18:14Two of my team drew each other.

00:18:16I only had four going into the invitation one day,

00:18:18and now two of us has drawn each other.

00:18:20Ryan and Robin also drew each other,

00:18:22and they just wanted to swap,

00:18:23but my team, we decided that we would rather race each other

00:18:25so we could for sure have one person move into the next round.

00:18:28That'll give us more points.

00:18:29It's all about the points.

00:18:31If we would have raced both of them,

00:18:32and they'd have beat both of us,

00:18:33if we'd have had no points,

00:18:34then they would have had 20.

00:18:35It's all about strategy here.

00:18:36We're trying to get to that number one goal,

00:18:38the team with the most points.

00:18:57Next pair, we got Chris Rankin in the right lane.

00:19:00Going up against Lizzie Musick.

00:19:03And Lizzie Musick gets the win.

00:19:26Wow, pop over there on the right side from Chris Rankin.

00:19:30As soon as the light turned green, I left,

00:19:33and I saw him for a little bit,

00:19:34and I didn't see him anymore.

00:19:35Apparently, he had problems again,

00:19:37and my car made a nice, clean pass,

00:19:39got there first, and got the win.

00:19:40So I was happy with that.

00:19:42We got data to work with.

00:19:43We're moving on to second round.

00:19:46This is a big race for Team Bodie here.

00:19:52Nate Saylor was Bodie's top pick in the draft,

00:19:55so he is counting on him to deliver a ton of round wins

00:19:58and a lot of points this season.

00:20:03are going to be Kyle Cannon over there in the right lane,

00:20:05going up against Nate Saylor in the left.

00:20:08This is the first for the points.

00:20:12This is my first race ever in the Invitational today.

00:20:16I'm pretty excited, pretty anxious.

00:20:18I know what the car can do.

00:20:19It's all going to be really dependent on me.

00:20:22Kyle had horrible luck in Ohio.

00:20:25He kicked some rods out of the motor.

00:20:27He got him a new motor.

00:20:28He earned his spot in the Invitational today.

00:20:31Kyle's got a lot of drive to him.

00:20:33He knows that this is an opportunity for him

00:20:35to step up and shine above everybody else.

00:20:38And that dedication and that determination

00:20:40is what's going to get him into the winner's circle

00:20:42and keep him on my team.

00:21:18You know, the sun's blazing down the track.

00:21:20You know, first round is a very important round for our team.

00:21:23This is the first race here in Virginia

00:21:25that 40 grand's up for grabs,

00:21:27but also the team championship points.

00:21:30The more rounds we go,

00:21:31the more points we accumulate,

00:21:32we need to stay ahead and gain points

00:21:34to win this championship.

00:21:35All right.

00:21:40We got Manny Alvarez in the left lane

00:21:42going up against Rich Bruder in the right.

00:21:46Manny, he struggled a little bit.

00:21:48He had some suspension problems.

00:21:50He says he figured those out,

00:21:52so hopefully he's got a hot rod this weekend, too.

00:21:55We've got fast cars in our crew,

00:21:58and all we need them to do

00:22:00is make good, consistent passes,

00:22:02and we're going to be all right.

00:22:03Rich Bruder's going to win that pedal fest there.

00:22:27Both cars have to pedal.

00:22:30I knew Rich has always been fast.

00:22:33Rich's car runs good.

00:22:34They've got a new screw blower combination

00:22:36that runs very well,

00:22:37and they're making moves and pivoting along the way.

00:22:40They changed some stuff yesterday in testing

00:22:41that helped the car,

00:22:43and every time I see that car gets faster.

00:22:44We get one lucky round,

00:22:46that's our lucky round, so...

00:22:47Yeah.

00:22:48Team Murder Nova came into the event

00:22:50with all five of his drivers in the first round.

00:22:53Now he's down to three after Manny's loss.

00:22:55And he has drivers in each of the next two races,

00:22:58including Jeff Lutz,

00:22:59his number one pick,

00:23:01going up against Bobby Ducote.

00:23:02It sounds like Bobby's having some problems in his pit.

01:22:29But there's a ton of points left up for grabs as these teams chase that $200,000 championship.
