Joe Buck previews Newcastle United's clash with Benfica at St James' Park amid news that Sandro Tonali is a doubt for the match after missing training on Monday night.
Transcript
00:00So ahead of Newcastle United's clash with Ben Seagat in the Champions League at St James' Park,
00:05Eddie Howe spoke to the media, it was obviously just a few days after the defeat of Brighton,
00:10so there's very little you could say anything new, but I think the main thing was Sandro Tonali.
00:15Now, Tonali obviously came off on Saturday and then Sky Sports reported that on Monday he didn't take part in training
00:21and that is a major blow, you know, Tonali's become one of Newcastle United's key players,
00:26one of the Premier League's best midfielders, he's certainly in that sixth role, he's a really important way,
00:32a part of the way Eddie Howe wants his team to play, you know, with Joel Linton and Bruno at either side,
00:36or Jacob Ramsey, Lewis Miley, whoever it is, either side, Tonali's the one in the middle that really knits things together,
00:42he's always there when you need a break-up play from the opposition, so he's a really key player
00:46and to not have him available would be a major blow, especially in a big Champions League game like this.
00:51Howe did confirm a little bit of good news that it was just illness, he did say Tonali was touch and go,
00:56but the Newcastle Medical Department gave him every chance of playing against Benfica,
01:01so that's one to keep an eye on, as I said, it'll be a major blow and not say Tonali play,
01:05but it would then offer a chance for maybe someone like Lewis Miley to play,
01:08he might even play anyway ahead of Joel Linton, but Lewis Miley, you know, he burst onto the scene a couple of years ago,
01:13he was fantastic in that Champions League run, it's hard to forget how young he is now,
01:17how young he was then, and how much, you know, he slid into that team perfectly,
01:21he slotted in there really well, played against some of, you know, some really good opponents,
01:26PSG a few times, and not just in the Champions League, you know, there was games against Man City in the Cup,
01:32Chelsea in the Cup, you know, there's big games and Miley looked at home,
01:35so whether he gets an opportunity to impress instead of Tonali, or even alongside Tonali and Bruno,
01:40maybe Joel Linton's job, it's an interesting one for Eddie Howell to decide,
01:42but what Newcastle now you need to do is harness the support of the game from Team James' Park,
01:47will this be the massive big atmosphere of Barcelona? Probably not, will this be a little bit more subdued?
01:52Yes, maybe, and will, you know, Jose Mourinho's style of football limit Newcastle, limit the excitement?
01:58Very probably, but I think Newcastle just need to get onto the front foot, use the crowd,
02:01and the crowd need to stick with them, I think, as I said, it's not going to be one where the crowd are up from minute one,
02:05I think they're going to have to force themselves into the game, Newcastle are going to have to force themselves onto the opposition,
02:10and hopefully they can get a result, because if you emerge from the game victorious,
02:14that'll have been six points from the first three games, and a very good start,
02:18I think, if you look, it's about 11, 12 points, it's probably going to get you a safe passage in the next round,
02:23so if you can leave the match against Benfica with six points, that's a really good start,
02:27and, you know, one that, with another home game to come before the next international break,
02:30that's against Athletic Club in November, I think, you know, even three wins on the balance,
02:35four, then nine points in four games, that'll be a brilliant start,
02:37but, as I said, you know, they're not going to be taking that lightly,
02:41they're going to take the challenge of Benfica lightly,
02:42they're not going to rest on the laurels, because it's going to be a huge game,
02:45Jose Mourinho will know how to set his team up, he'll know how to calm the crowd,
02:48and, you know, he'll know what he's doing, so, yeah, it's a very intriguing match,
02:52hopefully Tenarley's fit to play, and if not, hopefully whoever,
02:55how decides to replace him with her, you know, can do a job,
02:58because Newcastle are going to need it, because the games keep coming thick and fast,
03:01and, of course, the best way you can stay up to date with all the Newcastle United news,
03:04not just from the match against Benfica, but the head of the match against Fulham and Tottenham next week
03:08is with the Shields Gazette.
