00:00Chinese state media is targeting five Taiwanese companies who they say have helped a unit of
00:05Taiwan's military that Beijing accuses of inciting separatism.
00:14A social media account affiliated with Chinese state broadcaster CCTV released this video,
00:21along with an article on Chinese messaging app WeChat, accusing the companies of helping to
00:26make websites, develop data operation systems, and complete other projects for the Taiwan
00:31military's psychological warfare unit, which China says has long plotted to incite separatist
00:37activities. The response from Taiwan has been swift, its defense ministry saying the unit's
00:43activities comply with the law. The ministry accuses China of spreading false information
00:48and urges Taiwanese people not to spread it further. And Taiwan's mainland affairs council,
00:54which handles relations with China, adding that these actions are part of China's cognitive
00:58warfare efforts, meant to divide and intimidate Taiwan's military and its business sector.
01:04One expert agrees, saying intimidating businesses is a big part of China's goal.
01:35This all comes after China earlier this month released the names, photos, and ID card numbers
01:40of 18 people it said are core members of the psychological warfare unit, and offering
01:46rewards of around $1,400 for tips leading to their arrest. At the time, the mainland affairs
01:52council warned Taiwanese people against sending any information.
02:14Still, the Chinese state media account claimed it got tips about these Taiwanese companies
02:30from people inside Taiwan, though they gave no evidence. According to an analyst, this is not
02:36the first time China has publicly targeted people inside Taiwan, releasing their names
02:41and photos. But this does appear to be the first time China has taken things a step further,
02:47naming organizations associated with those they are targeting, which the analyst said
02:52could mark a shift in its strategy to intimidate Taiwan.
