00:10Earlier this week, China fired missiles and deployed fighter jets and naval vessels
00:14in drills it described as simulating a blockade of Taiwanese ports.
00:19Taiwanese military officials said some rockets landed closer to the main island than ever before.
00:25Washington has urged Beijing to end military pressure on Taiwan and engage in meaningful dialogue.
00:33The U.S. also reaffirmed its commitment to peace across the Taiwan Strait
00:37and opposed any attempt to change the status quo by force.
00:41China's show of military force came shortly after the U.S. approved an US$11 billion arms package for Taiwan,
00:48one of the largest in recent years.
00:50But President Donald Trump said earlier this week that he did not believe China had plans
00:55to launch an invasion of Taiwan in the near future.
