00:01Thirteen Bannerman Road is where Sarah Jane Smith lives.
00:04And it's home to things way beyond your imagination.
00:07There's an extraterrestrial supercomputer in the wall.
00:11A genetically engineered boy genius in the attic.
00:15A schoolgirl investigator across the road.
00:18And a whole universe of adventure right here on the doorstep.
00:26Ready? Always.
00:30No one really knows just when Ashen Hill Manor was first built.
00:38But through history, there has always been a house here.
00:42And so they say, just as long as there's been stone and oak, there has always been evil.
00:54They say it was the reputation of the house that attracted the magician Erasmus Darkness.
00:59He entered the service of the young lord of the manor, the widower, Lord Marchald.
01:11Darkling promised that in return for his protection, he would replenish the family's fortunes with the secret of making gold from base metal.
01:21But after two years working in a secret chamber far beneath the house, Darkling's alchemy had failed to bear one ounce of gold.
01:33And the people on Marchald's land were uneasy.
01:39There were stories of how Darkling came among them at night.
01:43Of how he took away people that never returned.
01:46And that he was not human.

02:45it's a good story professor but i don't believe in ghosts of course you don't and neither do i
02:50but ashen hill manor is reputedly one of the most haunted locations in the uk
03:05so let me get this right if you don't believe in ghosts sarah jane and you don't believe in
03:10ghosts professor then what are we doing here to see if we're right to find out scientifically one
03:16way or the other in that case i'm delighted you invited me along to cover the story we're set up
03:22through here are you sure about this i mean there's no such thing as ghosts is there god i don't believe

03:46so
03:48introductions sarah jane smith journalist
04:15Sarah-Jane Smith, journalist, my assistant from the Pharos Institute, Toby Silverman.
04:22Hello, Toby. This is Ronnie and Clyde, sort of Sarah-Jane's apprentice.
04:26And I'm, uh, I'm carrying sandwiches.
04:30So are you the, uh, technical genius?
04:32Well, I don't know about that.
04:34I'm just interested in the quantifiable effects of metanormal energies on the established phenomena.
04:40Wish it had put, Luke.
04:41Only he said that people who believed in ghosts were still living in the dark ages.
04:48Or something like that.
04:51Luke is my son.
04:52Toby is the son of Professor Sir Rupert Silverman.
04:56The physicist.
04:57Oh, what does your father think of his son dabbling in the paranormal?
05:01I ought to get on with putting my monitoring equipment together.
05:04Yes, of course.
05:06This house has a long history of psychic activity.
05:10Then, there are the disappearances.
05:13Disappearances?
05:15Nobody said anything about any disappearances.
05:17No, they didn't.
05:19There's something else, isn't there?
05:21The Scribbins family, who legally still own the house, a mother, a father and two children,
05:27vanished one night, twenty years ago.
05:30The keys were found, still in the doors, locked from the inside.
05:35Toby, what on earth are you doing?
05:39My screwdriver, I just put it down there and it's gone.
05:42It's vanished.
05:46What's that?
05:47EMF meter.
05:49Paranormal activity causes a fluctuation in the electromagnetic field.
05:54Save your batteries, Professor.
05:55The only ghost at work here is the spirit of Sir Isaac Newton.
06:01Brevity fell and rolled away.
06:05Come on.
06:06Let's have a look around.
06:07At least we know Lord Marchwood was real.
06:20I've no doubt he was.
06:22And his children probably disappeared, too.
06:25Perhaps Lord Marchwood did spend the rest of his life looking for his children.
06:28But the afterlife?
06:30I doubt it.
06:31Oh, it's so sad how this house has fallen into disrepair.
06:35It must have been quite wonderful.
06:38Now Professor Rivers couldn't have picked a creepier place for a ghost hunt.
06:42It's felt like someone's been watching me since we got here.
06:44It's psychological.
06:45You know this house is supposed to be haunted and your imagination starts to work overtime.
06:51No wonder Luke wanted to stay at home.
06:53I could get bored of jumping at my own shadow pretty fast.
06:58What about the disappearances?
06:59An entire family vanishes into thin air.
07:02Whether or not you believe in ghosts, that's just sinister.
07:05But I've seen so many strange things in my life.
07:07Wonderful and frightening.
07:09Yet all of it had a scientific explanation of some kind.
07:12The trouble with ghosts is, there simply isn't any scientific basis for them to exist.
07:20What's that?
07:21Dimitra?
07:22I didn't see any bell tower.
07:24That's because there isn't one.
07:29Miss Smith?
07:41Why didn't you hear it?
07:42The bell.
07:42Church bell.
07:44What bell?
07:45There's not a bell tower.
07:53There's nothing.
07:55And why did we hear something like Quasimodo on a joyride and Professor Rivers and Toby heard nothing?
08:00It doesn't make sense.
08:02I'm telling you, I don't care whether Sarah Jane believes in ghosts or not.
08:07There's something seriously freaky about that place.
08:09Let's check up here.
08:30History of Ashen Hill, ma'am.
08:32I thought.
08:32Look at this place.
08:59It's beautiful.
09:00Yeah.
09:04I bet Castle Dracula looked okay on a sunny day, too.
09:08Look.
09:22It's not like it's been used in years.
09:24Well, that would be because everyone just disappears.
09:29Are you scared?
09:31Clyde Langer.
09:32Scared.
09:33I've taken on just about every creep in the universe.
09:35Right?
09:36Iron afraid and a ghost.
09:37Good.
09:38Come on, then.
09:39Oh, I suppose that cucumber farts in here.
09:49It's just old and damp.
09:50Must have been wonderful here years ago.
09:53Picnic by the fountain, taking the boat out on the lake.
09:58If you like to paddle.
09:59Can you turn that on?
10:15Who's there?
10:18Is there someone out here messing with us?
10:20Because they're not falling for it, okay?
10:25I'm not hearing this.
10:27I don't believe that.
10:28I'll bring to this in this.
10:33My footprints?
10:33Hello?
10:47Hello?
10:50What are you doing?
10:52It's a ghost that can't hurt us.
10:53It's already dead.
10:54Besides, listen to her.
10:56Hello?
11:18Are you feeling freaked, Jen?
11:26What's wrong?
11:29I think what you experienced was a stone tape manifestation.
11:33Some of us are a bit new to this kind of thing.
11:35You might need to explain.
11:37It's the theory that events can be recorded on physical matter,
11:40normally stone,
11:41and then, under certain circumstances, they get played back.
11:45That's the most convincing explanation for most so-called hauntings.
11:49The house is built on a giant slab of granite bedrock,
11:52which research suggests is a great conductor of these psychic recordings.
11:56There are stories about the grey lady that walks the castle rampart,
12:00or sometimes a legion of Roman centurions marching along a road.
12:05Only people only ever see them from the knee up.
12:07Because the Roman roads were lower.
12:10Exactly.
12:12I heard about this castle where some lord was murdered by his jealous brother.
12:16He locked up his head, and every Halloween it rolls down the castle steps.
12:20The man in the mirror, he didn't like any sort of recording.
12:23If it was a disembodied spirit, let's hope he shows up again tonight.
12:28It's after eight and it's gone dark.
12:30It's time to begin the experiment.
12:32If I could have everybody's mobile phones, please.
12:35Our phones?
12:36What for?
12:37And mobiles can interfere with our equipment.
12:39We can keep in touch throughout the house with walkie-talkies.
12:42I'd like to speak to Luke first.
12:44And Clyde and Ronnie should call their parents.
12:45Of course.
12:47We'll be in the control hub, running final checks.
12:50Toby?
12:54Hi, Mum.
12:55Everything's cool.
12:56Just bedding down for the night in the old haunted house.
13:00I haven't seen any ghosts yet, but I reckon they're in a skeleton stuff.
13:04And yes, we've had dinner.
13:06We had ghoulish.
13:10The EMF network?
13:12All meters through the house, operating and online.
13:14Thermostraps?
13:15Operating and online.
13:17Video cameras?
13:21Toby?
13:26Sorry.
13:28For a moment, I thought I saw...
13:31You saw what?
13:34Oh, nothing like that.
13:37All cameras are fine.
13:38Good.
13:41Oh, no.
13:42Hang on.
13:44Nursery cam's on the blink.
13:46Mm-hmm.
13:47I'll go and check it.
13:57Apparently, Luke's been driving Dad round the bend all afternoon.
14:00What?
14:00Luke's your dad's star pupil.
14:02He's probably just secretly planning your wedding.
14:04Yeah.
14:05Not anymore.
14:06Dad taught him to play chess today,
14:07and Luke beat him six times before he went home.
14:09Oh, I bet he had your father in pieces.
14:12I closed that book.
14:13I know it.
14:16Is there a draft here?
14:18Someone tell me the window's open.
14:20Please.
14:21It isn't.
14:21Must be a draft coming down the chimney.
14:24It's him.
14:25That's the man from the video.
14:27That's Erasmus Stark, the magician.
14:31I bet he made a mean-blown draft for kids' eyes.
14:34That's better, Professor.
14:59Oh, the camera doesn't do you any favours.
15:04I heard that.
15:06Where's the professor?
15:08Something seriously freaky just happened.
15:09Which I'm sure has a rational explanation.
15:12She's in the nursery.
15:13It won't be long.
15:14Happy with the positioning, Toby?
15:16Right on target.
15:18Miss Smith wants to talk to you.
15:20I'll be down in a minute.
15:21I refuse to believe that book was opened by any ghost.
15:42It was certainly not the ghost of a supposedly evil magician from the 17th century.
15:46Well, something opened it, Sarah Jane.
15:48And there wasn't any breeze.
15:49We would have felt it.
15:49And that was definitely the man in the pavilion.
15:53Oh, wow.
15:54Look at that.
15:56What is that?
15:57EMF readings throughout the house are spiking.
16:01Something's happening.
16:16What happened?
16:17Where did she go?
16:18She's vanished.
16:21Come on.
16:22Better check the landing.
16:22Professor Riverstone, strike me as the kind of place hide and see you.
16:48Hello?
16:49Hello?
16:50Hello?
16:52Is anybody there?
16:55Professor?
16:56Where are you?
16:57You had us all worried for a second.
17:00Hello?
17:01Where am I?
17:02Is anybody there?
17:04Can anybody help me?
17:06Professor?
17:08Celeste?
17:09Whenever Professor Rivers has gone, she can't hear you.
17:12Yeah, but where is she?
17:13I don't know.
17:14These readings, they're like nothing I've ever seen before.
17:16What is that?
17:17It's like your EMF meter, only more useful.
17:25Can you set that up?
17:27Hold the geist activity.
17:31This room is famous for it.
17:33Or perhaps just a freak mechanical fault.
17:36I just got hit by my rookie horse.
17:43No, you must have knocked it.
17:45I didn't mind.
17:46I know I didn't.
17:47The electromagnetic signature is increasing by five milligold.
17:55Eight.
17:57Ten.
17:58But this is astonishing.
17:59No, this is freaky.
18:12Students are all crazy.
18:17We had to get out of here.
18:19What are you kidding?
18:20This is amazing.
18:21Come on, now.
18:29It's locked.
18:30It can't be.
18:31The village in here is building.
18:32I don't want to be in here when it...
18:33Still say there's no such thing as the paranormal, then?
18:47I only wish the professor were here to see it.
18:49And my father.
18:50Your watch?
18:51Did it pick up something alien?
18:52The readings were confused.
18:53Alien?
18:54That's what I like.
18:55Aliens I can handle.
18:56We have to track down the source of whatever is happening here.
18:59We have to stop it and get Professor Rivers back.
19:02Now, how do we do that?
19:04We do.
19:04We always do.
19:05We look for clues.
19:08Oh, my readings are different now.
19:09Still energy signatures that I don't recognize.
19:12Either human or alien.
19:14Less intense, almost dormant.
19:16The EMF readings have gone back to normal as well.
19:18Those readings in the nursery were completely unnatural.
19:21Unnatural, but not supernatural.
19:23There's an energy source somewhere in this house.
19:25If we can locate that, we'll be on our way to finding the professor.
19:29Shall we split up, yeah?
19:30Oh, I don't think so, Ronnie.
19:32Professor Rivers managed somehow to disappear in the blink of an eye.
19:35The same thing may have been happening here for centuries.
19:38Yeah, but it's a big house, and we don't know how much time we might have.
19:42All right.
19:43But don't take any unnecessary risks.
19:46Hey, there's nothing to worry about.
19:48We all know loot is the loose cannon, and we can't keep the levels through the house.
19:52Yes, have a look around, but be careful.
19:55OK, the study.
20:03Always a good place for clues.
20:06This place doesn't look like it's been touched since the last people disappeared.
20:09Yeah, just be careful.
20:12Around here, I wouldn't be surprised if there really was a skeleton in the cupboard.
20:15Oh, I'm jumping in the shadows now.
20:31Please, you must leave him.
20:33Oh, Lord Martial's children, but you can't be.
20:41We want our father.
20:42Your father?
20:44He keeps us from him.
20:45Who does?
20:46You must leave the house before he comes for you.
20:48All of you.
20:49Who?
20:49Who will come?
20:52Was it you that opened the door?
20:54Were you trying to warn us about Erasmus' darkening?
20:56He will take you all.
20:57You will never leave.
20:58I want to help you.
21:07I want to help you.
21:07Clyde, look at this.
21:22Someone was researching the house and the people that disappeared.
21:24Well, it didn't do that much good, did it?
21:26At least it all disappeared.
21:28Look, this list goes all the way back to 1665.
21:31Lord Martial and his children.
21:32I'm a new friend.
21:34Erasmus' darkening.
21:35I'm unable to find any historical records of Erasmus' darkening.
21:43But Marchwood's household accounts prove he existed.
21:47Stories that darkening was responsible for disappearances from local villages are impossible to substantiate.
21:52Perhaps the answer lies in the secret passage.
21:57Did you say secret passage?
21:59Mm-hmm.
21:59As in whoever wrote there went looking down it and maybe never came back?
22:03You should show this to Sarah Jane.
22:06Oh, no, no, no, no, no.
22:08What is it?
22:10It's a list of the secret passages.
22:12Well, and guess what?
22:14There's one in Toby's control hub.
22:24Hello?
22:24Is there anybody out here?
22:28Whoever you are, I'm not here to hurt you.
22:30I promise.
22:36Give yourself, my lady.
22:38Get into the network!
22:40Shh!
22:40Shh!
22:41Shh!
22:41Shh!
22:41Shh!
22:41Shh!
22:41Shh!
22:41Shh!
22:41Shh!
22:42Shh!
22:42Shh!
22:42Shh!
22:42Shh!
22:43Shh!
22:43Shh!
22:43Shh!
22:43Shh!
22:44Shh!
22:45Shh!
22:45Shh!
22:46Shh!
22:47Shh!
22:48Shh!
22:49Shh!
22:50Shh!
22:51Shh!
22:52Shh!
22:53Shh!
22:54Gorgon Nights, he got us out by opening a secret passageway.
23:01It's just a question of finding a panel, or something to press, and...
23:09Ah!
23:11Hey, Presto!
23:14I think we've hit a brick wall.
23:16Oh, that's magic.
23:17It's pretty dark down there.
23:18Yeah.
23:19I can't believe I'm without one, especially if you're going somewhere with Sarah Jane Smith.
23:24Have you got it?
23:25Have you got it?
23:26Look, someone's got a hold of your hand, haven't they?
23:27Go on.
23:28Go on.
23:29You've bought a bigger torch?
23:30What, and spoil the look of my jacket?
23:31I'm not just an action hero, you know.
23:35I am a style icon.
23:36Yeah, yeah.
23:37Yeah, yeah.
23:38The very Spider-Man.
23:39Come on.
23:40Come on.
23:41The very Spider-Man.
23:42Come on.
23:43It's alright, Toby.
23:44It's only me.
23:46You're alright, Toby?
23:47It's only me.
23:48You're alright.
23:50It's only me.
23:51You're alright, Toby?
23:52Yeah.
23:53I'm not just an action hero, you know.
23:54I am a style icon.
23:57I'm not just an action hero, you know.
23:58I'm a style icon.
23:59Yeah, yeah.
24:00The very Spider-Man.
24:03Come on.
24:04It's alright Toby, it's only me.
24:10You're alright.
24:12Are you all right, Miss Smith?
24:14I'm not sure.
24:16Well, they do exist, Miss Smith.
24:18But we could be on the verge of something so enormous here.
24:22Is that why you're so jumpy?
24:23Oh, I'm not jumpy. I'm excited.
24:30This could be the scientific discovery of all time.
24:33The ultimate question answered is their life after death.
24:38And that would mean you could prove yourself to your father.
24:42I'm presuming he doesn't approve of your area of research.
24:46Science has a very short-sighted view of the paranormal.
24:49For a good reason.
24:50There is nothing scientific about ignoring phenomena
24:53just because it doesn't fit in with your view of the universe, Miss Smith.
24:57Believe me, Toby, my view of the universe is very detailed.
25:00And I understand humanity's need to believe in some sort of afterlife.
25:04But whatever is happening here, ghosts, do not exist.
25:07Well, I have those EMF briefings for you.
25:15Talk to me.
25:16Where?
25:20He's gone.
25:26Are you sure you don't believe in ghosts?
25:27Look at this place.
25:42I'll take it all back.
25:44Everything else, that was not creepy.
25:46This place...
25:48This is creepy.
25:49This is Creepsville, Transylvania.
25:52Look at this stuff.
25:53This is Hogwarts, Tim Burton style.
25:59It's Harry Potter.
26:01Has a close shave off some of your time to find.
26:04Do you know where we are?
26:06Well, it isn't Senter's Workshop.
26:08According to the legend,
26:10Erasmus Darkling spent two years
26:11working in a secret chamber beneath Ashen Hill Manor.
26:15This is it.
26:16It's all for real.
26:18This isn't been around in a while.
26:19Maybe this is the reason for whatever's going on here.
26:23If this part of the legend is true...
26:25Then maybe he really did make those tickets disappear.
26:28And Professor Rivers.
26:30Brandy, this guy lived hundreds of years ago.
26:33And I know what I saw in the pavilion.
26:34It was him.
26:36Darkening.
26:37Well, I have to admit it.
26:39I've seen some weird stuff.
26:40I mean, there's weird, and then there's...
26:43This place.
26:48What was I signing up for?
26:53It's like electronics, but from hundreds of years ago.
26:57But it's still working.
27:02Who's there?
27:04Welcome to my dominion.
27:07My halls of granite.
27:09You cross my threshold of your own free will.
27:12And now, by my will,
27:14you shall study.
27:18No more eternity.
27:24Release us from this purgatory.
27:27No, do this!
27:29What is going on in this house?
27:30It is far more dangerous than a haunt.
27:33Here we go!
27:36What was that?
27:37It's a poltergeist activity.
27:39I think it's following us!
27:40It doesn't matter what you shut out.
27:43You never know what you're locking yourself in.
27:45Come on in here!
27:46Hmm...
28:08You never know what you're locked in
28:10You
