00:00Now we go live to Vatican City, where the canonization of seven blessed men and women
00:15will be presided by Pope Leo XIV. Among them are blessed Jorge Gregorio Hernandez and blessed
00:21mother Carmen Jorandiles, the first two Venezuelans to be canonized in a holy mass presided by Pope
00:27Leo XIV. Let's see more. St. John Paul II beatified him on October 7th, 2001.
00:45Another of the blessed is Peter Torot, who lived from 1912 to 1945.
00:54He was born on the island of New Britain in Papua New Guinea. He was born in a trading
01:02village of Rakunai. And at the age of 18, he enrolled at St. Paul's College in Taligalpi,
01:12which was established to train full-time catechists to proclaim the Gospel.
01:16In 1936, he married and had three children with his wife. Then in January 1942, the Japanese army
01:30occupied the island and imprisoned the European missionaries. During that time,
01:36Peter Torot found himself leading the mission of catechesis. Then in 1944, the Japanese occupiers
01:51forbade him from carrying out any religious activity. And Peter, despite the ban, refused and built
02:02a an underground shelter and continued to gather people for prayer and the celebration of the sacraments.
02:11He was well aware of the risks he was taking
02:13and he opposed the village leaders and some of the local population who
02:28supported the legalization of polygamy, which the Japanese legalized.
02:33and he opposed this stance in defense of monogamous and indissoluble marriage.
02:44He was arrested and sentenced to two months in prison. And while in prison, his sister came to visit
02:52him. He said to her, do not cry. I am here for a good cause. I am very happy because I am here for my faith.
02:59In July 1945, he was murdered by a lethal injection. Pope Saint John Paul II celebrated his beatification
03:11in January of 1995 in Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea.
