The Vatican is celebrating the canonization of seven blessed men and women, including Blessed José Gregorio Hernández and Blessed Mother Carmen Rendiles, the first two Venezuelans to be canonized. The holy mass is being presided by Pope Leo XIV in St. Peter's Square. Among those being canonized is Peter Torot of Papua New Guinea, who was martyred in 1945 for defending Christian marriage and continuing religious activities during Japanese occupation. Also being canonized is Italian Vincensa Maria Poloni, founder of the Sisters of Mercy in the 19th century, who cared for chronically ill women. The ceremony marks the official declaration of sainthood for these individuals, allowing Catholic faithful to venerate them.
