Once you've got simple major and minor chords under your fingers, 7th barre chords are the next stage to make your playing sound more professional. Stuart Ryan shows you the relevance of the major 7, minor 7 and dominant 7 chords.
00:00Hi, I'm Stuart Ryan. In this video I'm going to explain the three primary seventh chords,
00:05what they are and how you can use them. Perhaps the best way to think of these chords is as more
00:09colorful versions of simple major and minor chords. To build seventh chords you take the notes of a
00:15triad, the root third and fifth, and then add a major or minor seventh onto the triad. Part of the
00:20character of seventh chords comes from where you place the seventh in the chord itself. Let's start
00:25off with three common C major seven shapes.
00:55Next, here are three minor seven chord shapes.
01:25And now here are three dominant seventh chord shapes again played in C.
01:37C.
02:07play the C major scale harmonized as 7th chords now, so you're going to hear major, minor, dominant
02:13and minor 7b5 chords here. Knowing how to play a scale of 7th chords is the gateway to playing
02:19more colourful chord progressions.
02:49Let's turn it into music, here's a 1-4-5 chord progression in C using 7th chords, so that's
03:11going to be C major 7, F major 7 and G dominant 7. I'm going to play a soul inspired rhythm
03:17to bring the part to life.
03:24I'm going to play a song.
03:31I'm going to play a song.
03:38I'm going to play a song.
03:40Dominant 7th chords are really at home in styles like blues and funk. So here's a 1-4-5 blues rhythm
03:47part in C. I'm going to play a song.
03:49So that's going to be C, F and G with each chord played as a dominant 7th.
03:56Dominant 7th chords are really at home in styles like blues and funk. So here's a 1-4-5 blues
04:09rhythm part in C. So that's going to be C, F and G with each chord played as a dominant 7th.
04:15You're completely different.
04:18Thanks for playing.
04:22You're completely different from C. So that's going to play again for you.
04:26I'm playing with a chant for you.
04:30So I'll be making a song for you, Peter.
05:14Next we'll explore the sound of minor 7th chords with a 70s disco style rhythm part. This is another 1 4 5 in C, but it's all minor, so we'll play C minor 7 to F minor 7 and then G minor 7.
05:44This is another 1 5 in C.
06:14You'll hear 7th chords in all styles of music, but especially in soul.
06:38I'm going to play a 70s soul inspired track now, using chords drawn from the C major scale we studied to begin with.
06:44When you've learned my part, try creating your own rhythm part with my backing track and the chords we studied.
07:08I'm going to play the 70s.
07:12I'm going to play the 70s and the 50s which I'm going to play with you as a 10000 student.
07:16And now we're going to play a 50s.
07:17First we're going to play depending on your way in the car, which I've been wearing.
07:20It's a 70s.
07:22The 70s have been described as something that you've only 10 years ago.
07:58Thanks for watching and don't forget to hit
