00:00This is Tom and his team. They're offices in the town hall and their workshops are next to the town hall and Tom's come to make their bid. There you go sir.
00:16It sounds like our projects may be quite similar to this show. Steel Valley might mean that some people might accidentally vote for us so that could be a good thing.
00:31It's probably a part of that presentation. Thank you all very much for taking the time to vote today.
00:40My name is Tom. I am from the Steel Valley Project. We've been around Stocksburg since 1988 working with volunteers on a range of environmental projects to try to improve sites for people and wildlife.
00:56The project that I'm here today to talk to you about is at Bibbins Wood. Is everyone familiar with Bibbins Wood?
01:03If you are. So if you're not familiar with it, if you go out of the deep garden right towards Sheffield, it's the very very large woodland one on your right hand side that kind of goes up the hill.
01:16People might know it because recently we've done a project there which was rejuvenating a dragon sculpture that we got in the wood.
01:25So it's been there for quite a long time, that sculpture, about 20 years. But its head basically rotted, it was made in wood, it fell apart and we decided that we needed to keep it in the head.
01:38So we made one out of stone so it will last longer. We installed that and we put some wild flowers in front of it so it looks like it's breathing fine.
01:47So we did quite good over the summer. So we did have a lot of people actually going up to the site and maybe it was having more front traffic.
02:00And unfortunately during that time it was quite wet. So the path going up the hill, off Moor Hallway, it did get very very muddy and a lot of people really struggled to get down there to visit the dragon.
02:14So what we'd like to do is, to improve that foot pan, we're going to put a sandstone aggregate surface down so that it doesn't get muddy.
02:24It's a lot easier to walk without still here, so it's still going to work hard. But hopefully not going to slip it around but we don't run away on past the path as well.
02:32There's also a really nice ancient dry stone wall alongside the pan, which we have repaired sections of in the past.
02:41But we have the resources to be able to do all of that wall and we'd really like to continue to repair that.
02:47So part of the project would also be repairing that wall, which is quite a bad state of repair on certain sections of it.
02:55So the idea of the project is not just to improve access, and we still did rise there more.
03:01We also work with a really fantastic group of volunteers who couldn't deliver our projects without them.
03:07There's a couple of people here tonight that are from our work today, so I just want to say thank you for all that hard work that they put in,
03:14for improving the environment around Stocks Creek, DECAR and the surrounding areas,
03:18because they did a fantastic job of working to improve green spaces for all of us, which is really appreciated.
03:26And during the course of the project, they will learn skills in dry stone wall, which is a bit of a traditional heritage craft,
03:33and also how to build a footpath. Some of our volunteers are from backgrounds where they try to get back into employment or get a job in the industry,
03:42so we try to skill them up and get on with that sort of career path.
03:47So we have our team with success in the past. We're asking for £18,000, which I know is quite a lot of money.
03:55Tri-stone one is very blatant intensive, and we do want quite a lot of footpath repairs in the Woodland.
04:03It's not just the path that goes up to the dragon. There's certain sections elsewhere in the Woodland that get very relevant in very certainly in wet weather,
04:12so we try to prepare all the secret sections to make it more accessible for everybody.
04:18So yeah, thank you very much. Please do confuse us with people.
04:24And get your votes in for Steel Valley Beacon. I mean the Steel Valley Project.
04:30So yeah, thank you all very much.
