00:00Devil's Tower, the first U.S. national monument, established in 1906 in northeastern Wyoming,
00:06near the Belforce River. It encompasses 2.1 square miles and features a natural rock tower,
00:13the remnant of a volcanic intrusion now exposed by erosion. The name Devil's Tower originated in
00:201875 during an expedition led by Colonel Richard Irving Dodge, when his interpreter reportedly
00:25misinterpreted a native name to mean Bad God's Tower. Geologists agree that Devil's Tower began as
00:32magma, or molten rock buried beneath the earth's surface. The story behind Devil's Tower is,
00:38in the Arapaho legend, a young girl is transformed into a bear and injures her sister while chasing
00:43her siblings. When her sister does not recover, Bear Girl climbs to the top of Devil's Tower,
00:50abandoning her family to keep them safe. The tower is made up of mostly hexagonal
00:55columns, but some have as few as four or as many as seven sides.
