00:00Okay then Sergio, just give me some specifics about how many defibrillators are being donated and how much was raised to do it?
00:07Well I'm delighted to be here at Durham Constabulary this morning to donate 140 defibrillators to the force.
00:14They're going to go into every single police response vehicle and it's cost Red Sky Foundation a huge amount of money.
00:21There's £185,000 have gone into this of funds raised from across the year, our fundraising activities
00:28and we'd like to say a huge thank you to everybody who's done some amazing things to raise that money.
00:33The importance of the defibrillators going into every police vehicle is absolutely to the max
00:39because we hope that they never have to be used but we have evidence to show now that when a 999 call is made
00:46generally speaking it's often that a police response vehicle is first on the scene.
00:51Those police officers are now going to be equipped with the defibrillators
00:55in order to perform not only early hands-on CPR but also early defibrillation.
01:00The difference that's going to make is increasing the chances of survival from as little as 7% all the way up to nearly 80%.
01:07So if somebody is in cardiac arrest it means that they're going to be in safe hands.
01:12I was here actually when we had a similar donation for Northumbria Police.
01:16I understand that these defibrillators have already been used a number of times, yeah?
01:20That's right, so the donation that we made to Northumbria Police just recently was for the value of £200,000
01:26and they have been used in the first two weeks of them being in every police vehicle over 15 times now
01:32and lives have been saved.
01:34This whole project is a kickstart to hopefully influence the Home Office.
01:39We go to London and we're going to demonstrate with the statistics from this project
01:44to show that a device in every police vehicle across every force across the UK will save thousands of lives every year.
01:52It's a known fact that over 40,000 people have an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest every year.
02:00Only 1 in 10 people survive on a national level and right here in the North East that statistic is a little bit more harrowing
02:08because it's 1 in 14 people survive.
02:10So with these devices we're hoping that police officers can help the paramedics of the ambulance services
02:17but most importantly they're in the heart of the community and should anybody need one in a medical emergency
02:22we're confident and we're hopeful that lives will be saved.
02:26So it really is a difference between life and death?
02:28It certainly is the difference between life and death.
02:31We encourage as many people to learn CPR.
02:33Please visit redskyfoundation.com forward slash CPR and learn this skill in 10 minutes.
02:39Anybody can do it and anybody can use a defibrillator.
02:44Okay then Simon, I understand you know firsthand just how vital defibrillators can be.
02:49So yeah, what's your story? What happened to you?
02:51Yeah, absolutely.
02:52So in April this year I was unfortunate to have a cardiac arrest
02:57whilst in the gym locally.
03:00The good thing for me was that I was saved by a colleague and some wonderful members of the public
03:08who actually thought about CPR, life saving procedures and were quick to think and grab a defibrillator.
03:16So I wouldn't be here today without the tremendous actions of those people and the fact that they were able to access a defibrillator within minutes of the incident happening.
03:29So what we're doing today with the Red Sky Foundation is just phenomenal.
03:35And I'm really proud of the organisation that Durham Constableys made this commitment to work with Red Sky and put these defibrillators in all our response police cars.
03:48So it gives us the opportunity to support members of the public should they have a medical episode and need the life saving procedures that I did earlier this year.
04:00As I understand quite often, even if an amateur is being called, it's often the police were first on the scene to emergency situations.
04:07Yeah, absolutely. So it just depends where we are. We're obviously going to be out in the community and we could come across an incident or get called to the incident and respond first.
04:19So it's fantastic that those officers that get there are going to be able to help the public and potentially save somebody's life.
04:27Again, Sergeant Archer Ball, I understand that these pieces of equipment are going to be fitted in Durham Constabley police cars.
04:34So just how vital is that going to be for the force?
04:37It's absolutely amazing and very vital.
04:40Over my career, I've been to countless CPR in progress incidents.
04:45We've had to manually do CPR at something I hear on a near daily basis that my colleagues are out doing.
04:51So the ability to deploy a defibrillator at those incidents will undoubtedly save lives.
04:59It is absolutely amazing that Red Sky have partnered with Durham Constabley to make this happen.
05:06The ripples from that are significant.
05:11We'll be able to be hands on, have the right kit there and hopefully save lives.
05:18And obviously I understand that healthy heart and heart care are particularly important to you for personal reasons.
05:25Yeah, so my daughter Beatrix lived at the Freeman Hospital for 15 months while she waited for a heart transplant.
05:34And during her time there did have a cardiac arrest and a defibrillator was used to help revive her.
05:41So the partnership there again with Red Sky on a personal level.
05:47It's absolutely amazing to see such a can-do organisation come together to support us in our work
05:55and keeping the community safe and in saving lives.
05:58And that was인지 to know more we can get into that ability for social distancing.
