00:00Boost your immune system. Energy for the whole day. Superfood, detox, natural.
00:04In 2024, the supplementation market was valued at $485 billion.
00:12485 billion dollars in English.
00:15But by 2030, they're expected to rise by 44%, to 700 billion.
00:21Some juicy facts, right?
00:22Yes, indeed. And that's what hundreds of influencers and doctors of questionable ethics think.
00:27who invent their own products and promote them.
00:30Or thousands of scientists who sell how vitamin D and vitamin K are essential for your health.
00:36Of course paid by laboratory.
00:38But it's true. Taking omega-3s will make my heart healthier.
00:41Taking vitamin C will make me better at defending myself against viruses.
00:44Today we are going to delve deeply into this whole world of supplementation.
00:49We will see what is true and what is not, according to science.
00:52And if you stay until the end, I'll probably save you several hundred euros.
00:56But first, if you enjoy this type of content, please like and subscribe.
01:00We upload content every week.
01:01Now, let's continue with the video.
01:04Vitamins for everyone.
01:07Before getting into it, we need to know exactly what this whole world of supplementation is.
01:11and all the politicking behind it.
01:14Supplements are products that contain nutrients or bioactive substances.
01:18that are complementing our diet.
01:20They can be the famous vitamins, amino acids, minerals, etc., etc.
01:24In Spain, the European Union, and virtually the entire world, they are considered food, not medicine.
01:30And therefore they do not need to demonstrate effectiveness before being sold.
01:34That's the key.
01:35If I am a pharmacist, for example, and I want to develop a cure for the flu,
01:39I have to do experiments and clinical trials to prove that my drug is actually working.
01:45But the same does not happen with supplementation.
01:47I, right now, if I want, can launch a product that I have called Albert Chamena that sells vitamin C
01:52and I can put it on the market without anyone saying anything to me.
01:55I just have to comply with the minimum regulations, ensure the labeling is correct, and make sure it's non-toxic.
02:00Result of lack of regulation.
02:02A market that is too free and with messages on labels that are too ambiguous
02:07that make you believe something that is not true.
02:09But then, where does this whole world of supplementation come from and why are so many companies behind it?
02:14So let's travel back a few hundred years.
02:16Vitamins were discovered in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
02:20Scientists like Casimir Funk give it the name, vital amine.
02:24Since they saw that it had the power to prevent diseases such as scurvy or rayitis.
02:28Too common at that time.
02:30In 1933 we began to be able to create them in the laboratory.
02:34And it was after World War II that they became fashionable.
02:36The pharmaceutical industry is born.
02:38And vitamins and minerals are starting to sell like hotcakes.
02:42And it was in the 70s that it started to become perverse.
02:45Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling releases his famous book, Vitamin C and the Common Cold.
02:50He explains that megadoses of vitamin C could prevent that cold.
02:54And boom! Multivitamin sales soared.
02:57The problem?
02:58The problem is that science never backed up Pauling's claims.
03:02People simply decided to believe him.
03:03And the industry took advantage of that.
03:05And from there we moved on to 2002, when the European Union considered them a food and not a medicine.
03:10So the industry is perfectly consolidated on the continent.
03:13Nobody stops them.
03:15Mega-flight chains, pyramid schemes, and online sales appear.
03:19And now we've reached the beginning of the video.
03:21A $485 billion industry each year.
03:26And it keeps growing.
03:27Despite these multi-million dollar businesses and their questionable ethics, to say the least,
03:31Science has followed behind, little by little investigating independently,
03:36what happens with this supplementation.
03:37And he has analyzed the real effect that taking vitamin C, K or calcium has on us.
03:42And what does science say?
03:44Well, we're going to see it right now.
03:49I would be a very poor communicator if I only focused on the bad.
03:52And leave all the good things that it has.
03:54So far we have seen how supplementation is sold, and a lot,
03:57as a solution for many ailments.
04:00But the reality, and we will see it later in this video,
04:02If you are healthy, you don't need to take anything.
04:05Still, it would be a mistake to simply add supplementation to the industry's list of lies.
04:11Science has shown that there are contexts in which yes, they are clearly important,
04:16and even save lives.
04:17Look, the human body is a perfect, highly refined machine,
04:20connected to the outside and needs food to function well.
04:24When we are healthy and have a balanced life,
04:27Your body knows how to juggle to get all the materials it needs to live well and live a long time.
04:32But there are situations in which we are much more vulnerable,
04:35and external help is a godsend.
04:37So, for example, obviously, in a person who has a deficiency of some nutrient,
04:41such as vitamin B12 or vitamin D,
04:43supplementation is key.
04:45Although, before continuing to take pills chronically,
04:48It would be interesting to know why you have this deficit.
04:50But that's another story.
04:51Another example is elderly people or pregnant women,
04:54that to be 100% healthy they need that supplementation.
04:58And then we have complex situations,
05:00such as hypertriglyceridemia,
05:02or for example when you have diarrhea, you can take antibiotics.
05:05They come in handy there too.
05:06Okay, now that we've got that out of the way,
05:08Let's now see the dark side.
05:14Imagine you walk into a pharmacy and see it.
05:16A huge bottle of multivitamins that says it.
05:20More energy, more life, more defenses.
05:23And only for 17.99.
05:25Who wouldn't want to have more energy, more life and be healthier?
05:29And only 17.99 a jar.
05:31Look, I'd be irresponsible if I didn't take it, wouldn't I?
05:34Why live in mediocrity when I can literally live longer, better, and healthier with one pill a day?
05:40Well, because reality, sadly, is not so epic.
05:43If you are healthy, multivitamins do not reduce the likelihood of cancer.
05:47They don't increase longevity, they don't give you more energy, they don't do anything.
05:50It's literally throwing money at some colorful capsules.
05:53Let's go back to the specific example of vitamin C from earlier.
05:56The Nobel Prize winner and great defender of megadoses makes it fashionable.
06:00Hundreds of thousands of people go out to buy those bottles of vitamin C so they don't get sick.
06:05Result?
06:06Decades of research later make it clear.
06:08It does not prevent colds in the general population.
06:11One thing is certain.
06:11Some studies say that taking vitamin C when you are already sick reduces the severity and length of time you are sick.
06:17Point for vitamin C.
06:19But hey, these studies, each one says a different thing, it's very inconsistent, so, well, try it if you want.
06:25And no matter which example we go to, it's always the same.
06:27In the 90s, antioxidants became very fashionable.
06:30A perfect formula for living better and preventing cancer.
06:33Today we know that it is not a lie, but that it is also counterproductive.
06:38For example, in 1996, when I was born, a curious experiment was carried out.
06:42Several universities in the United States managed to recruit 18,000 people at risk of lung cancer due to tobacco use.
06:49A large majority were given special supplements to prevent that cancer.
06:53And they just waited until 2001 to see what was happening.
06:56Well, they realized that those people who took the supplement had a higher risk of getting cancer.
07:02They immediately stopped the experiment.
07:04And in 2006 they went back to see what was happening to those people.
07:07Well, those who took the highest doses still had a higher chance of getting cancer.
07:11All that glitters is not gold, is it?
07:13Look, I don't want to scare you or disappoint you if you're a supplement enthusiast.
07:18I just want to show you that the world is more complex than we are led to believe, whether we like it or not.
07:23For better or for worse.
07:25And to finish this part I want to highlight something that has become very fashionable.
07:28Ginkgo Biloba.
07:29Promoted and sold as a natural cognitive enhancer.
07:33Better memory, better brain, everything more powerful.
07:35But again, science sees none of that.
07:38It does not improve memory, attention, or concentration.
07:41Only in some cases where people already had cognitive impairment did it help them feel better.
07:48So be careful, the lack of regulation and misleading advertising can lead you into slightly dangerous situations if you're not careful.
07:54Another quick example is that excess vitamin A causes hypervitaminosis.
07:59And that can cause birth defects in your baby if you're pregnant.
08:02But as we've said, it's a multi-billion dollar industry.
08:06In Spain alone, it moves more than 2 billion euros each year.
08:10More or less the same as luxury hospitality.
08:12And it grows at a rate of 8% per year.
08:14For investment, not so bad.
08:16Furthermore, marketing, influencers, and today's fitness culture are all working in their favor.
08:21They promise us a better life.
08:23Strengthen defenses.
08:24Have more energy to spend with our children.
08:26And now we return to the topic I brought up in the video on psychoneuroimmunology.
08:30We all want to be well and healthy.
08:32And the life we have, most of us currently, takes us away from that.
08:36And many times we feel guilty because we know it.
08:39And you know who else knows?
08:41The companies.
08:42And they play with us, with our fear.
08:44And for our part, we simply believe them.
08:46Because it's the easy thing to do.
08:47We hope so.
08:49We hope that with a simple pill a day, our lives will be much better.
08:52It's just too beautiful to throw away, isn't it?
08:55We hope it is true.
08:56And we blind ourselves so we don't see anything else.
08:59The positive part is that there is a path that leads us to that healthier life,
09:03longer-lived and with more energy.
09:05And naturally and for free.
09:06And I tell you about it on this channel practically every week.
09:09Yoga, meditation, a good diet,
09:12letting go of resentment and hatred, self-knowledge, going to a psychologist...
09:16All of this leads you to a healthier life naturally.
09:19This is the royal road to hard-hitting health.
09:22Okay, so is supplementation a scam or a useful tool?
09:25Well, as always, it is much more complex than it seems.
09:28Your body has evolved over millions of years to adapt to the resources available on Earth.
09:33If you have a balanced diet and are healthy, you don't need anything else.
09:37In other situations, however, supplementation is essential.
09:40For example, pregnant women with folic acid.
09:42The laboratories that create these supplements play with your fear
09:46and they sell you promises that they themselves know they cannot keep.
09:49and that surely if you start eating well they will come true on their own.
09:53And in fact your body is very wise.
09:55That excess calcium, vitamins or whatever will end up in the urine.
09:59The most expensive urine in the world, by the way.
10:01And now a good question might come to mind.
10:03How do I know if I'm one of those people who needs to supplement or not?
10:08Well, we're going to see that right now.
10:09The urine that is worth it.
10:13We have already seen that taking vitamins, just in case, is not only useless,
10:17but it can be dangerous, as well as a waste of communal money.
10:20Knowing whether you need to take supplements or not, and which one to take, is very easy.
10:25Go to the doctor, tell him/her your current situation
10:28and asks for a complete blood test.
10:30Your doctor will help you choose the type of supplementation you need.
10:35and whether you need it or not.
10:36And here comes a key.
10:37Supplements do not replace habits
10:40and should only be taken at specific times in your life.
10:43Eat well, move well, and think well.
10:45That's enough.
10:46But now it's your turn.
10:47Did you know all this?
10:48What surprised you the most?
10:50Tell me in the comments.
10:51Remember that we also upload videos on TikTok and Instagram.
10:53Everyone can find balance again.
10:55See you next week with more Human Perspective Sciences.
10:58Bye.
