In the remote Aboriginal community of Aurukun on Queensland’s Cape York, grocery prices are high enough to make city shoppers look twice. Locals say feeding a family can cost thousands of dollars a month and healthy eating is beyond the budget of many.

00:53Arrakoon is 800 kilometres from Cairns. During the wet season, it can be cut off for weeks at a time.
01:00You can't get trucks in. You've got to rely on sea freight, which is more expensive.
01:05And we've got to fly fresh produce in there, fresh milk, and it really drives up our costs.
01:12The Queensland Government subsidises some items by 20 per cent at the checkout.

01:21I'm very conscious of the price in remote stores.
01:24And that's why this investment of over $50 million is about the reduction of nearly 50 per cent in the cost of foods in these stores.
