00:00A brazen and shocking act is how Victoria's Premier has described it.
00:07The alleged stabbing occurred on the 2nd of October.
00:10A woman allegedly stabbed a 36-year-old woman who was on her way to work just behind me
00:17near the intersection of Little Bourke Street and Spencer Street at about 7.40am.
00:22Now that woman from Melbourne's West was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
00:27Police searched the area and they arrested a woman and seized a knife.
00:32A 32-year-old woman was charged with intentionally causing injury
00:37and committing an indictable offence whilst on bail.
00:41Now she appeared at the Melbourne Magistrates Court the following day and has been remanded in custody.
00:47Now the Premier Jacinta Allen has thanked police for their work and says it was a shocking attack.
00:53No one who commits such a brazen, violent act on our streets should be on our streets.
01:00It was sickening.
01:02And I want to thank Victoria Police for moving swiftly, for moving swiftly, for apprehending this individual.
01:09Now Victorian opposition leader Brad Baden has criticised the government saying that those who break bail should face jail.
01:17And he said that it should have been that the government informed the public about the attack right after it happened
01:25and not two weeks later just now that it's coming out.
01:29And he also said that it wasn't enough that the government was only thanking the police without providing the support that they actually need.
01:35We've also spoken to a manager of a business that's just up the road here.
01:40And he told us how it's been quite common for crime to occur on Little Bourke Street,
01:45that he's witnessed multiple robberies and people being held at knife point.
01:50And he's been telling his employees to avoid this street altogether on their way to work.
01:55We've also spoken to a few tourists who say that they've been feeling unsafe here.
02:01And one who was even considering moving to Melbourne has since reconsidered because of the rising crime rate.
02:07And speaking to a business association for those in the CBD,
02:11she's also told us that it's been disappointing given that businesses have already suffered after COVID with a decrease in visitors.
02:18And now with the crime rate rising, she's afraid that this is going to be another factor that drives visitors away.
