00:02:52car number six by about a minute and 17 seconds over car number one that is the the porsche
00:02:59of timo bernhard currently driving that car in third place the second of the toyota's that's
00:03:03kazuki nakajima at the wheel of car number five he's about another 15 seconds farther back down
00:03:08the road behind him is the second of the porsches that's neil jani at the wheel of car number two
00:03:13that was our pole city you'll remember he's about 38 seconds behind nakajima another half minute
00:03:19behind him the best of the audis lucas de grassy driving the brazilian at the wheel of car number
00:03:24eight the sister car number seven that lost six laps earlier in the very early on in a race where
00:03:31the turbo charge upon that to change the turbo did a heck of a good job to get that done in just losing
00:03:37only six laps so a little bit more than 18 minutes or so remarkable job by that audi team that car is
00:03:43running into seventh place and in six is the best of the rebellion car that's kind of a 30
00:03:49matteo touche currently driving that kind of the sister car number 12 that had a lot of problems
00:03:54and it's way back down in the order in lmp2 is pierre terrier who has taken over the wheel recently on
00:04:00the number 46 car that's a terrier by tds orica nissan he leads from seven rakel me in carnival 36
00:04:08who has just made a pit stop also in the third place in that car's kind of a 47 the kcmg orica that
00:04:16also has just made a pit stop and in fourth place is roman ruzinov for g drive racing with the jota
00:04:23jota sport team kind of a 26 he also has made a pit stop roman ruzinov in carnival 26 had a
00:04:29drive-through penalty uh two or three hours ago now for an infringement but still up there in the top
00:04:36four or five that's going to elevate simon dolan in the number 38 the sister car into the probably to
00:04:42the second well no it'll be there quite a way back probably into the third place in that class in
00:04:48uh lmgt pro it's number 68 for gt of sebastian boudet that leads over the sister card of the ford
00:04:58chip ganassi racing usa entry number 69 of scott dixon and then the best of the ferraris jucano fizzy keller
00:05:06for rizzi competizione card of 82 those three cars covered by about 14 seconds at the moment in
00:05:12fourth place in that class and the only car still on the lead lap in gte pro is billy johnson in the
00:05:19number 66 ford chip ganassi racing uk entry billy had a spin about an hour or so ago but he's been running
00:05:27well since then and in fourth place running out the top five one lap down to the leaders in gte pro is
00:05:34darren turner aston martin racing car number 95. in gte am it's number 88 machine that is the
00:05:42abu dhabi proton racing porsche and it's uh cali dalpa comezi who's driving that car right now ahead
00:05:48by a little bit over a minute over the aston martin carnivore 898 of pedro lami third place now in gte am
00:05:58jeff siegel is driving the scuderia corsa carnivore 62 entry that is a ferrari 458 italia run but also
00:06:06by the af corsa team so thank you to our leaders at the moment with seven hours in down in this race and
00:06:12mark cole has joined us as well again he's back with us and mark still a long long way to go and
00:06:19it's certainly looking good for the the uh toyota team right now they've been leading and stefan sarazen
00:06:25has just brought that car on to made another pit stop yeah and kept kept that lead i've been thinking
00:06:30about that while we were on the break and toyota won three who would have expected that uh this far into
00:06:35the race and of course there hasn't been an outright japanese win since 1991 johnny herbert
00:06:41volker weidler and bertram gashow in the mazda that rotary mazda that deafened half the crowd and certainly
00:06:48ended the racing career volker weidler because he just got this tinnitus after having driven that
00:06:54car for so long the vibration and the noise and uh but anyway that's that was then this is now can
00:07:00toyota pull it off two cars in the top three after 17 hours of racing it's very impressive i mean they've
00:07:09really done a fantastic job they are running one lap longer than both the audi and the porsche at every
00:07:15pit stop and as a result of that stefan sarazen he's just made the pit stop right now and he's
00:07:21still maintained his lead over timo bernard in the best of the porsches yeah that that's the really
00:07:26impressive factor isn't it we never really saw that coming did we and of course we didn't have a
00:07:31chance to see how cars were going to to really push set their race race pace in qualifying because
00:07:37it was such a fragmented practice and qualifying destroyed by weather by yellows by red flags
00:07:4317 hours to go there's still p1 base looks really good right now well there's a little uh little
00:07:51booster there there's an eco booster there for sebastian bordet yeah guys 17 to go we're leading
00:07:57we want to see you there in 17 hours as well still in the same place look the speed is carrying 300 clicks
00:08:03just then wow yeah that's crazy but uh toyota look fantastic at the moment don't they and their car
00:08:08is allegedly really easy on us tires also so they don't have that worry they're going longer on fuel
00:08:14they don't have that worry and look who's set the fastest lap so far yeah it's toyota yeah they don't
00:08:19really have actually that was on lap 81 we're now at 111 and uh just looking so so racy toyota and uh we
00:08:29we didn't really see this at spar either because uh they had the engine problems bottoming out in eau
00:08:34rouge which sent these shock waves throughout the for the whole engine system just damaged components
00:08:39and uh they learned a lesson from that though jeremy well you know they've done a fantastic job over the
00:08:43winter when they came here one year ago they were so far off the pace just saying about about not
00:08:50bottoming out he goes straight over the curbs and the number five car as uh nakajima-san comes in
00:08:55night we'll see that again in a minute he just completely misjudged the pit entrance
00:09:02maybe he did but this is a routine stop for kind of a five it's been stopping uh one lap later than
00:09:09the number six car as a result of the fact that anthony davidson uh way back what time was that uh earlier
00:09:15this afternoon at about 6 45 on 55 laps in the books and davidson made the pit stop went back out again
00:09:22complained of a vibration brought that car straight back in again at the end of the next lap they
00:09:27changed all four tires and now do you see the difference now between the number six car and
00:09:32the number five goal though it was mike conway's brilliant opening stint in number six that opened
00:09:36up a pretty handy lead it really was tremendous drive damien fortner yeah it was super it was
00:09:41absolutely uh a stonking drive from uh from him and uh hopefully we're going to see more of that here's
00:09:47a replay of what mark was alluding to just now so nakajima coming in oh and completely missed the the
00:09:56second chicane on the on the on the right hand side as as he should have gone left went straight across the
00:10:02gravel um yeah this might have been a faster entry actually yeah i just got a bit of time there i was just
00:10:07going to say to you how smooth and uh keeping off the curbs the toyota drives a bit and then then
00:10:13nakasan goes and does that so i won't tell that one do you think they spotted that that advantage of
00:10:18them okay the track one the camera doesn't show that just how steep that is down from uh the
00:10:24dunlop bridge down through the s's and then on another steep climb up the hill and of course
00:10:28that first corner after the dunlop bridge forever known as scotch corner now after mcnish's huge
00:10:33jackson there three years ago when he tangled with beltoise's ferrari slightly uh warmer climate than
00:10:41the scotch corner i know of in the uk oh yeah well we're going to be taking a break in just a moment
00:10:49but we've still got a long way to go as jerry reminders 16 hours and 51 minutes of racing and it's
00:10:55all live here on eurosport if it's a 24 minutes showing on your sport one switch over to eurosport two
00:11:01if you want the live action or follow what's been going on through neil cole and tom christensen's eyes

00:14:16Let's just have a little recap for those of you who may be joining us later in the evening, stroke earlier in the morning, at lunchtime or whatever mealtime it is where you are.
00:16:11We're right back.
00:16:35or 12 seconds and the number one car of timo bernhard in second place the number two porsche
00:16:43of israeli in third place but both of those cars will be due pit stops fairly fairly soon
00:16:50the toyota 7000 was injured four laps ago and we can expect the next pit stop for the number one
00:16:58porsche that is the second place car in uh 152 more laps stunning shots on our screen of the
00:17:07toyota going three wide down the hard shoulder of the former n138 levon to tour road to go around
00:17:14the outside of a wheel-to-wheel battle the the most on straight is public highway it is a two
00:17:20lane road not until carriageway one up one down and then there are two hard shoulders and that is
00:17:26basically as you find on most route national or d roads as they are now in france blue lights
00:17:32flashing up ahead because there is a quicker prototype on the way chasing down that slower or
00:17:39marginally slower lmp2 car in front number eight porsche uh audi rather this is the car that has
00:17:44uh been in fifth position having a routine stop waiting now for the fuel to finish going in
00:17:51and then the car will re-fire and be sent back out on track and the only problem the only problem
00:17:57that cars had so far uh martin was a and it wasn't an unscheduled pit stop but it was a longer than
00:18:03scheduled pit stop uh just before eight o'clock this evening when oliver jarvis brought the car in
00:18:08before it should have been just a regular fuel stop but they also they're at every stop they always open the
00:18:14left hand door and exchange the the uh the uh replenish the bottles and they're in there one for the
00:18:20driver and the door basically wouldn't open they had to take the door off completely replace it and that
00:18:27cost them about 25 seconds ollie baldwin wanted to know on twitter could we have a full list of
00:18:33retirements jeremy it won't take long it won't uh i think it's basically one car i think at the moment
00:18:39certain that would be the number 89 uh porsche in gtm that's the protein competition entry the weather
00:18:47tech car uh with uh with uh mark miller and lee keen uh cooper manil also was supposed to drive that car
00:18:54but couldn't because he was uh not feeling at all well this morning so mark miller uh was at the wheel
00:19:00of the car when he had an instant up at the under braking for the dunlop curve hit the wall pretty stoutly
00:19:05with the front end and that is so far our only retirement in this race and the irony won't be
00:19:11lost on him that the fluid he went off on was dropped by a factory porsche in the pro class so
00:19:18that cost them their participation in the race unfortunately as you say the single car so far
00:19:24retirement we are a quarter distance in a 60 car field biggest field on record certainly the biggest
00:19:32field i can think of for a long long time we've only had 56 garages up until now so we've only
00:19:36had 56 cars we now have 60 garages so we have 60 cars because we're quite generous we give them a
00:19:43garage each it is amazing though isn't it just one retirement after what is it seven and a half hours
00:19:49of racing and uh with various other cars have had various dramas of course we've documented some of
00:19:54them already the number 67 ford chip ganassi racing uh uk entry that that of uh andy prio they've had
00:20:03all sorts of difficulties had a problem right away with with the gearbox i think that was and that was
00:20:08on that it took a while before that car got going then they had another problem later on and then marina
00:20:12frank kitty put it in the gravel chop up more side corner as well now did you hit to find out
00:20:28quiet acknowledgement that it was quite simply driver error which is unfortunate for marina because
00:20:34you know i have a lot of sympathy what happens is you're breaking from nigh on 200 miles an hour
00:20:40through a curved braking zone over a bump and if you miss your breaking point by just a few feet
00:20:47you will have exactly what he had which is a the most almighty lock-up with a car going straight on
00:20:53as the circuit inconveniently turns 90 degrees to the right when the darkness sets in the track which
00:21:02is a living breathing thing constantly changes its grip level because the temperatures are changing
00:21:09all of the time and it can be the case that from one lap to the next the car's ability to break at that
00:21:15exact same point isn't quite there in the next lap and we see this a lot all just as we see it lights
00:21:21off on the number 47 orica third place kcmg car matt house and richard bradley both driven sugi amatsuda in
00:21:29his second stint in the car so winning car from last year yes exactly winning team from last year if
00:21:35not exactly the same chassis kcmg chased the world endurance championship in lmp2 as well came up shy
00:21:42in second place in the season's end results but that is a car that is a dead stick isn't it exactly the
00:21:47phrase i was going for no lights on but somebody is home unfortunately he's now going to have to cycle
00:21:54through all sorts of control or delete options in the hope of getting the wretched thing to restart but
00:21:59we're talking to the mana team earlier on in the week and they were saying there are so many
00:22:04supplementary backup systems there's a second this for everything a second sensor for everything a second
00:22:10system for everything so hopefully he will be able to sort himself out and get it fired back up and if
00:22:16he can get back to the pit lane again it might just very simply be that there is a sensor gone down
00:22:23and it's trying to shut the engine down even though the engine is perfectly healthy here we get a
00:22:28second slow motion look at it he has power the lights are on but he's lost drive he's coasting to a
00:22:34halt so either he's maybe he's losing what do we think guys he's he turned it off there try to i reckon
00:22:43he's turned it off there try to control or delete martin right now i had a quick question earlier about
00:22:50why are there purple lights on the porsche there are purple lights on the number one porsche only in
00:22:55the pit lane the number two porsche has blue lights it's to identify them at dead of night
00:23:02in the darkness with the glare of white lights coming towards you white lights only means a prototype
00:23:07your car has a distinctive light pattern you'll see like little ribbons of light marker lights whites in
00:23:13the windscreen and start to identify cars to their teams as they come down the pit road to know
00:23:18exactly when to step out and usher it in carry on my brother alice is tweeting me saying is it
00:23:23possibly a drive shot failure i mean yeah anything that could could lose drive but at the same time
00:23:29when you go to do the the full ecu reset basically you have to turn all the power off wait a few seconds
00:23:36and try it again sometimes it fires sometimes it doesn't um i'm surprised though to see that the lights
00:23:43were on after the drive had failed but then they didn't come back on so we need to get to the
00:23:48bottom of that it's either turned itself off or he's turned it off and a little slow creep away from
00:23:56the pit stall looked almost like a stool for the tirier by tds car this car was second in the lmp2 class
00:24:03pierre tirier is on board and his uh father's company father's grandfather's company i'm not sure family
00:24:09firm anyway uh supplies frozen food and frozen fruit products so he's you know the captain bird's
00:24:15eye who he was referred to earlier on in france and uh tirier by tds racing in the european le mans
00:24:21series in lmp2 which is the top category in european le mans in the last two seasons very very strongly
00:24:28run team strongly driven strongly motivated multiple winners got very close to last year's championship and
00:24:35he comes back out still in second place ahead of number 26 orica
00:24:49retaken that and then you can see the p2 car coming onto the mulsanne look there's two cars battling for
00:24:54position he's flashing the headlights he has to go onto the hard shoulder and now he's on the right
00:24:59hand side uh is that the right side or wrong side right side of the road for a continental driver
00:25:04trying to work it out in my head you can see how tough it is when we're here blue lights flashing
00:25:09as he comes down to the first chicane not slow downs slow zones further around the track from
00:25:14all-time corner on and linking all the way down to our large now so that's a very long slow zone
00:25:22and that can't we see your calls kcmg car partly it is the kcmg ah i would imagine that car still hasn't
00:25:30certainly hasn't yet uh come around it's not completed that third sector on a lap so it's now
00:25:35lost uh a lap to the leaders in fact two laps leaders white headlights one of our p1 cars that has
00:25:41all the look of being an audi coming down into the second chicane on the mulsanne picking off track of
00:25:48traffic as it goes

00:28:49It's a very hard sport, but you have to take into account that everything you do at 24 hours of the day is to go as fast as possible on the bike.
00:28:58I'm very strong and I fight a lot with the rivals.
00:29:02Monument Iстины приближается.
00:29:32The PR girls from the IMSA series, Kelly Brea, were saying this probably actually, this is her first time here, probably actually even shades the centenary Indy 500 for spectacle and occasion.
00:29:43I'm glad to know that it is appreciated outside of Europe.
00:29:46Wherever you're watching, thank you for joining Eurosports Extended, live and flag-to-flag coverage of the 24-Hours Le Mans.
00:29:53We ride on board down the Mulsanne Strait with the number two Porsche.
00:29:57This is Neil Charney, who started the car in foul weather conditions, jumps coming back out of the pits and into a very slow section of track, where the slow zone is a mandatory 50-comps now, Sam Hancock.
00:30:08We were just asking off-air what the little LED lights are inside the cockpit of the Porsche that we can see when we're riding on board, just to the right-hand side of the windscreen.
00:30:21And I just noticed as the number two Porsche approached the beginning of the slow zone, there was a series of these flashing, in this case, yellow LED lights, which act as a warning system to the driver that they are in what is confusingly, I think, called the next slow zone.
00:30:39And what it actually is, is a deceleration zone, and those lights are a warning system telling them they must slow down in preparation for the next marker point, which marks the start of the actually restricted slow zone, where the incident is being cleared up.
00:30:55So, effectively, next zone is a yellow flag zone, where you should reduce racing speed anyway, but it is also the warning that you're coming up to the slow zone.
00:31:03Now, also, in front of the driver's eye line, which we don't get from this view, is an LED screen, which replicates all the flag and light signals that are being shown around the circuit.
00:31:13So, he'll be getting a blue screen if he's in a blue flag zone, a yellow screen in a yellow flag zone, an 80 screen in front of his eyeline in an 80 zone as well.
00:31:24I've had probably more texts asking, what are the purple lights inside the Porsche than on any other Le Mans subject?
00:31:30And the answer is, we're guessing, but that's what we think they are, because we haven't been told by Porsche.
00:31:36I'm interested, because we're riding on board here with the number two Porsche, as it goes blazing through the Porsche curves.
00:31:43I love that sight, when they're unimpeded by traffic, using all the road, those yellow lines that you just saw them driving over,
00:31:51beyond the white perimeter line of the circuit as it came out of the Porsche curves.
00:31:54There's deeply corrugated grooves, gouged into the tarmac there, that is supposed to act as a disincentive to go beyond the track limits.
00:32:04But we often see drivers going over them regardless, because A, it adds so much to your exit speed,
00:32:12and B, the cars are just so strong these days.
00:32:15Oh, and coming into the Dunlop chicane, there's an LMP2 spinner, that's the Murphy prototypes car.
00:32:21The Porsche has to take evasive action.
00:32:24I think it was Neil Yarny's Porsche, the third place car, and he went...
00:32:29That's Ben Keating aboard the 48.
00:32:31Yeah, locks it up under braking, back gets away from him.
00:32:37The bike call is coming, and the right decisions go, the inside.
00:32:41Oh, meanwhile, Yarny comes barreling in.
00:32:43That was the second place car.
00:32:44So that was the second place car, it was two red lights, that was Timo Bernhardt, I think, possibly,
00:32:48in the Porsche that took evasive action.
00:32:51Yeah, there's very little to choose between those two, because after that pit stop that they've just made,
00:32:56there's virtually nothing between them.
00:32:58They've both been onto the pit lane just recently, but how they've got quite so close together again,
00:33:03I'm not quite sure, because before that round of pit stops, they were separated by quite a long way.
00:33:08Well, the last pit stops are minute six for the number one car, minute five for the number two car,
00:33:13so it wasn't on that pit stop.
00:33:14It must have been, just as a result of that slow zone out there, because it was a long slow zone.
00:33:19While they were pushing that car out of the way, the number 47 car, they come to a halt there.
00:33:23I guess the number two car, well, also, the number two car was on pit lane while that stop was happening,
00:33:31so the number one car was out there going very, very slowly as well, so that enabled.
00:33:36Yeah, so then the number two car, they closed right in there, so very little to choose between those two,
00:33:41and Kazuki Nakajima, now in car number five, he's within ten seconds of those two Porsches as well.
00:33:47We saw shots there of some of the external activities that go on around here,
00:33:52apart from eating and drinking and listening to the radio and watching the races.
00:33:56There's all sorts of other things going on.
00:33:58I'm not sure they've got the freak show with the snake lady and all of that, the bearded lady,
00:34:02all the things they used to have here in the 80s.
00:34:04I think those have probably been sort of moved on to other less reputable locations,
00:34:09but certainly rock concerts every night, lots to see in the village,
00:34:13lots to go and buy in terms of team memorabilia, Le Mans memorabilia,
00:34:16the museum is open as well, which has got some stunning car displays.
00:34:21The America's actually blown away because the return of Ford 50 years on from their first win,
00:34:26there's a massive American influence at Le Mans, a special exhibition this year,
00:34:31and that's always worth saying.
00:34:32And you think, well, no, if I went to Le Mans, I'd watch every second of it.
00:34:36I guarantee you wouldn't, apart from anything else you planned, it wouldn't let you,
00:34:39but, you know, it's an astonishing thing where you can go away from the racetrack for half an hour,
00:34:44six hours and come back, they're still racing, it's still the same race.
00:34:49It's just the most ridiculous thing ever.
00:34:52So there's so much to see and do.
00:34:54And if you come for the first time, I was talking to some guests at the parade on Friday night,
00:34:58and they say, what should we do?
00:34:59So everything, everything you get offered, yeah, we'll do that, everything.
00:35:03Yeah, you've got plenty of times, Phil.
00:35:05It's nice for me to see that Americans at Le Mans exhibition featuring the Cunningham C4R
00:35:11that I was lucky enough to race recently.
00:35:13In fact, I've raced it a couple of times at Goodwood in the members meeting and the revival meeting.
00:35:18Fantastic car.
00:35:19We had a race win in that,
00:35:21and here it is, much celebrated on display in its exact specification that it raced here all those decades ago.
00:35:31One of the delights of historic racing is seeing cars that you were not either alive to watch race
00:35:39or present to watch race.
00:35:41And that's, you know, that's why historic racing per se and events like the Goodwood revival are so popular
00:35:46because they kind of recreate glorious races.
00:35:50And we haven't got Ferrari 250 LM versus Ford GT40,
00:35:54but here we've got those same battles being played out by the modern versions
00:35:58that hopefully our kids will then be hankering to see in 40 or 50 years' time.
00:36:05Back to the action.
00:36:06We've got a flurry of multi-category cars winding their way through the Porsche curves,
00:36:11trying not to trip up over one another.
00:36:14For me, I love this view.
00:36:15We've just got a little bit of ambient light left,
00:36:18but it's dark enough for the headlights of the cars to be blazing.
00:36:22And from a driver's perspective,
00:36:23this is definitely my equal favorite time of the race, along with sunrise.
00:36:29If you're lucky enough to be the guy in the car that gets the full transition
00:36:32from light to dark or vice versa, so it's quite a gradual process,
00:36:37what happens is you very naturally, subconsciously alter your vision.
00:36:41There's no sense of shock or having to re-find your feet.
00:36:45It just happens automatically, and it's a lovely focusing thing to find yourself in the dark.
00:36:53As we're looking at the pit spot, you get an idea of just how aggressive a driver change can be.
00:36:58The door opens, you get hauled out by the scruff of your neck
00:37:02for the next guy to get in as fast as possible.
00:37:04Well, and that's the format that we use here in the commonship booth as well.
00:37:08The door opens, the hook comes in, and you're off air.
00:37:11Yeah, but whoever's getting out there was clearly hopping on one leg there, wasn't he?
00:37:15I mean, there was some problem there.
00:37:17Yeah, I wonder whether he's run into a cramp issue.
00:37:22It is a tailor-made car.
00:37:24It's not particularly long in development.
00:37:26It may just be with the seating position.
00:37:29We talked about making custom-made seats.
00:37:32Maybe that his seat insert is not quite comfortable enough,
00:37:35and it's starting to pinch a nerve,
00:37:36but he's ended up having a cramp battle here
00:37:38between Pat Long and Pedro Lamy.
00:37:41And Pedro Lamy has been racing GT cars since the 1990s,
00:37:45and Pat Long was still in,
00:37:47well, he quite often wears shorts because he's in California,
00:37:49but it's short pants.
00:37:50And Pat Long, one of the standout GT drivers,
00:37:54and Pedro Lamy raced in Formula One, of course.
00:37:56He's raced prototypes, had lots of time in GTs.
00:37:59He's a factory called Viper Driver, among other things,
00:38:03and still racing harder.
00:38:05And this is for the lead of the class in the GTE AM category.
00:38:09Aston Martin, Pedro Lamy now at the front of the field.
00:38:13The Aston Martin bosses are down,
00:38:15watching in the Porsche curbs.
00:38:17They'll be particularly excited in the next couple of minutes
00:38:20to see Pedro coming past in front.
00:38:22Yeah, he's just taken a lead on this lap,
00:38:25halfway around this lap, has Pedro Lamy.
00:38:26I'm pretty sure that's the first time
00:38:28that Aston Martin has led in this race.
00:38:30So GTE AM cars, of course, they're the 2015 specification,
00:38:34so they're not the latest and greatest
00:38:36that run in the GTO pro class now.
00:38:40They have the longer diffusers, more downforce, better aero.
00:38:43These are the same cars that raced last season.
00:38:45And Pedro Lamy, of course,
00:38:46has a lot of experience in Aston Martins
00:38:48and has now taken over the lead of this race
00:38:50for Patrick Long.
00:38:51I mean, it was Patrick Long that led in the early stages as well.
00:38:54As our US correspondent,
00:38:56although Jeremy Shaw doesn't sound very US, does he?
00:38:58Pop quiz from Cole Trickle.
00:39:01You might guess from that name
00:39:03in which direction of motorsport we're going.
00:39:06Which four drivers...
00:39:08I'm going to throw this open.
00:39:09Answers on a postcard, please, or Twitter, if you must.
00:39:11Which four drivers in this year's Le Mans 24 hours
00:39:14have NASCAR starts at cup level?
00:39:19Top-tier NASCAR starts.
00:39:21And he gives us a hint.
00:39:22Only one is from the USA.
00:39:25Where Boris said was here,
00:39:25that would be my first pick immediately,
00:39:27but he isn't.
00:39:29Four cup start drivers.
00:39:31OK, there's one for Twitter.
00:39:35At Martin Haven,
00:39:37or at Jeremy Shaw Racer,
00:39:40or even at Sam Hancock.
00:39:42No, not at Sam.
00:39:43At Hancock underscore Sam.
00:39:46But if you want to ask us any questions,
00:39:49just use the hashtag AskEurosport.
00:39:52You don't need to type in all of our Twitter handles
00:39:55taking up valuable characters.
00:39:57Just ask your question,
00:39:58hashtag it AskEurosport,
00:40:00and we'll try and answer it for you on the air.
00:40:04Or alternatively ask the audience
00:40:06if we haven't got a clue what the answer is.
00:40:08But I just want to go back to that lead battle
00:40:10between Pat Long and Pedro Lamy
00:40:12in the GTE AM category.
00:40:15I just acknowledge that we're eight hours
00:40:17into a race thereabouts,
00:40:18and they are separated by tenths of a second.
00:40:22It's unbelievable.
00:40:23And that is replicated in the other three classes as well.
00:40:30Got it!
00:40:36Go, let's go!
00:40:53Go, let's go!
00:44:02It's still pretty difficult, though, isn't it, to get clear laps this time of night, too, because there's still a heck of a lot of cars out there, just the one retirement.
00:44:08Yeah, only one retirement out to 60 starts.
00:44:12The 47 KCMG car stopped out on the track.
00:44:18We're not aware of what's happened.
00:44:19We're not aware of what's happened.
00:44:20The team haven't put anything up on Twitter.
00:44:22And did we rescue the Aston Martin?
00:44:25I think we probably did that had that big looping spin, didn't we?
00:44:28So that is still running.
00:44:29So that is still running.
00:44:30Andrew Howard waiting to take over the Beach Dean car.
00:44:32Martin Short.
00:44:33Hello, Martin.
00:44:34Martin, you're here this year.
00:44:35Wants to know, Sam, how you bent the roof on the Ferrari in your first Le Mans.
00:44:38Listen, I deliberately took care of that in the private confines off air on Twitter and having had him throw me right under the bus.
00:44:46You just had to go and voice it.
00:44:48There was another bus coming.
00:44:49What can I tell you?
00:44:51I feel a conspiracy theory coming up.
00:44:54Okay, so our NASCAR answer, Nelson Pico Jr., that was a good call.
00:45:00Oli Gavin, I'm not sure, I don't think so.
00:45:04Briscoe and Dixon, Scott Dixon, Ryan Briscoe.
00:45:07I don't think they did.
00:45:08It's a possibility.
00:45:09I don't think they did sprint cut races, did they?
00:45:12I think we're going to have to get a cold trickle to answer the answer.
00:45:15Spooky Gadget Man wants to know, how do the drivers not get blinded by other car lights?
00:45:20Well, to a degree you do get dazzled, but you have to make sure that your interior mirrors have got a kind of slight dipping effect on.
00:45:30It won't be a bad news thing in the day, but slightly against the fact, because you see when they come towards the camera, the lights are very, very bright indeed.
00:45:39Johnny O'Connell may have made some road course starts.
00:45:43Johnny O, yes.
00:45:44Well, see, Ron Fellows was always a good champ for that when he was racing Corvettes, but he's now retired.
00:45:49He's here, of course.
00:45:50Is he here?
00:45:51I didn't see him.
00:45:52Oh, yeah, yeah.
00:45:53He's very much part of the scenery at Corvette Racing.
00:45:55With his wealth of experience, he's very much a brand ambassador, but very much involved also in the team side of things as well.
00:46:01I thought he was still running Canada Time Moxport Park.
00:46:04And Jonathan Wesley reckoned it was Poojun Jim hopping from the Eurasia car, although the team said he was getting in.
00:46:12So...
00:46:13Into a NASCAR?
00:46:14No, no, no, out of the Eurasia car, so I'm not quite sure what was going on with that.
00:46:18And another question, I've lost it on Twitter.
00:46:24How much would the number one portion cost?
00:46:27Well, the glib answers are, one, if you have to ask, and two, they're not going to tell you, because it's an open number.
00:46:34It doesn't matter how much it costs.
00:46:36It costs what it costs, because if you win Le Mans, it didn't cost that much.
00:46:41If you don't win Le Mans, it costs quite a lot.
00:46:43But honestly, there's no earthly way a team of that caliber is going to tell us how much it costs to run a car to buy a car,
00:46:52because they're not for sale to anybody at any price.
00:46:55So I'm afraid I can't possibly tell you.
00:46:57Andy Prio, NASCAR Cup starter.
00:47:02No, no.
00:47:05So just aside diversion, just keeping half an eye on the battle for third place between a Porsche of Timo Bernard and Nakajima in the Toyota behind.
00:47:16They're separated by just 14 seconds, and that's gap that's been fluctuating between about 11 and 15 over the last few laps.
00:47:24They're running around at a vaguely similar place between 324 and 326, which is not amongst the quickest times we've seen.
00:47:33The Porsches, certainly earlier on, had this slightly unusual habit of throwing in one astonishingly quick lap right in the middle of their stint that could be between three and four seconds faster.
00:47:44Just wondering, we've got this number seven Audi back in the pit lane now.
00:47:48That's having swing adjustments.
00:47:51Wing adjustments going on.
00:47:52You can see all the way through there, there is another wing tab, and that long twiddly thing on the end of an electric screwdriver, essentially,
00:48:00they're going to adjust that to give them a little bit more wing in the denser air, a little bit less wing.
00:48:07Maybe.
00:48:08I mean, would they have had time on the grid to make a wing adjustment, and if they did, for the rain, have they not had the time to take it off?
00:48:14But you're right, it's back in the garage, and they go in the garage, Sam, don't they?
00:48:18Because you're only allowed to have a maximum of four people working on the car in the pit road, and so any work that needs doing,
00:48:24they throw as many bodies at it, so they wheel it into the garage first.
00:48:28They do, but obviously they've got bigger problems than wing adjustments right now to deal with, which is why the car is back in the garage in the first place.
00:48:35They're just taking the opportunity to trim the car according to the latest feedback from the drivers as the temperatures change.
00:48:41I said a minute ago, it's amazing.
00:48:43You don't just start this race, find that the car has a particular balance, and enjoy or not enjoy that to the end of the race.
00:48:50Everything is changing all the time, any race circuit, especially one that's derived from a predominantly road surface that's used by public traffic for most of the year.
00:49:01It literally is a living, breathing thing.
00:49:04It changes throughout the night especially, and you can go from this beautiful, what we call happy hour, early in the morning, just as the sun starts to rise, but the air is very cool.
00:49:15There's a huge amount of grip, the engines are delivering tremendous power because of the cool, dense air, and then all of a sudden, in the space of what feels like 20, 30 minutes,
00:49:26it gets really slippery and greasy out of nowhere, and it's the dew and condensation on the road, and these guys are just having to feel that out every single lap.
00:49:36Lucas, we have to make a repair to the car, the 7 car has the same, the guys practice it on the 7 car, and then we'll do it on ours, so you've got to stay out, okay?
00:49:51Wow, my goodness.
00:49:53Big, big news there from the Audi team.
00:49:56Now then, is it the front, because the engine covers off, number 7's already blown a turbo?
00:50:02Well, we were saying earlier on that, very unusually, having had this turbo issue on the number 7 car, it's such an unusual occurrence.
00:50:14We heard Dr Ulrich saying earlier on they never have anything like that, so it's not as though the sister car has been driving around thinking,
00:50:22Oh, God, how long until ours happened? So maybe they've had something else come up, or maybe they just feel they've got to play the safe game and make the repair anyway.
00:50:32And you notice, although the team member there pushing the camera back out of the way as he was trying to get the air hose to allow the car to come back down,
00:50:40no longer are they using sight screens or walls of bodies to stop us seeing what's going on in the garage as much as the camera can from the pit road,
00:50:48because the ACO banned that specifically last week, because they said, if you're here to race, and the door's open because you're not retired, we get to see in.
00:50:57I think that's an excellent choice. Now, whatever the issue was, it does affect the number 8 car.
00:51:04Talk to Tom Christensen after we had, before he came in on air, after we had the conversation originally about the number 7 car and its turbo failure.
00:51:11We heard from Dr Ulrich saying, well, this is not expected.
00:51:14Tom was saying only like three or four years ago, and he was still racing, he had a slew of turbo failures, and he lost to Le Mans because of one of them.
00:51:21If he'd won nine times, of course, we'd have given him an umbrella on the grid, but he only won eight times, so it doesn't count for one.
00:51:26But if you've got a car that is built so individually and so specifically, and there are two of them that are identical, it's unusual one's going to have a mechanical problem that's different from another one.
00:51:41And that, you know, it's so early in the race, you're going 18, 19, 20 hours, hoping that the same problem doesn't afflict the car that is identical and was built next door.
00:51:52I mean, you know, they're twins, they're brothers from the same mother.
00:51:56It's unlikely that it's not going to strike both cars.
00:52:01He did win nine, by the way, Tom.
00:52:03Ten then.
00:52:04Yeah, exactly.
00:52:05You point is well taken, though, Martin, and it is remarkable, though, isn't it, that the Audi is having all these problems.
00:52:14They've had difficulties in the first few races of the season, but not with the turbos, as far as I can have understood.
00:52:21Yeah.
00:52:22But it's all sorts of niggly little things.
00:52:23Not so far.
00:52:24Not so far.
00:52:25No, exactly.
00:52:26They had a drive shaft failure on the, or a, what do you call it, step gear from the electric motor to the front axle on, during qualifying.
00:52:38And now the, the problem with the turbo early on in the race, and now another problem here, which we're very, very careful not to divulge exactly what it was during this last few minutes.
00:52:48And there was a five minute pit stop, almost, for that car number seven.
00:52:52Pat Long is being thrown up by Joanna Wright Bend as a US Spring Cup driver.
00:52:57And Gabor, I'm going to murder your, Chris, your surname, so I'm not going to do it, but Gabor, you know who you are.
00:53:04Nick Johnson, he said, did a NASCAR Busch race in Montreal, but that's not top tier, that's not cup race.
00:53:10In court records, Ryan Briscoe, Townsend Bell, seems unlikely.
00:53:17Johnny O'Connell, your own Blake Molen, Scott Sharp, Nelson Piquet, we think definitely.
00:53:22Johnny O, I think is a great shout.
00:53:24Scott Sharp, possibly.
00:53:25Yeah, possibly.
00:53:26Probably.
00:53:27Sebastian Bordet.
00:53:29Don't believe so.
00:53:31Poussons, not in cup.
00:53:33Jan Magnussen, not in cup.
00:53:34Scott Speed, well he's not here.
00:53:36Somebody suggested Darren Manning.
00:53:38I know Darren Turner's got the same Christian name, but they're not the same person.
00:53:42So that doesn't work.
00:53:44Scott Sharp started one NASCAR Cup race at Watkins Glen in 1992.
00:53:49Yes, admits Glen Allott, I did Google it.
00:53:52Very good Glen, well found.
00:53:54Ryan DL.
00:53:57Again, I'm not sure.
00:53:59By the way, if anybody's got chocolate sauce sweeties, we're in the middle of the upstairs row of porter cabins and I didn't go shopping yesterday, Sam.
00:54:06Please, sir, my hand is up because the number eight Audi, Lucas Degrassi, has just come in for that pit stop for the repair that we just heard the engineer get on the radio and warn his driver that they will need to do.
00:54:20So let's keep a close eye if we can on the cameras and see if there is any indication of what it is that has failed or they are making a preemptive strike on the Audi.
00:54:31Well, while you watch Olivier Plus on board, I can see that the number eight Audi has arrived and is on pit road and is still on the pit apron.
00:54:40Why? Because they are fueling it first.
00:54:42They're going to do a driver change.
00:54:44Lucas Degrassi will get in.
00:54:46But if they need to do anything else, and we have heard them say they do, we're going to need to fix it.
00:54:52It's going to go back on the trolley dollies and there you go.
00:54:55Yeah, and this is three laps earlier than we expected this car to be on two pit lane because generally it's been in the pits every 12 occasionally or more usually 13 laps.
00:55:08This stop is just 10 laps since this last one.
00:55:11Okay, this is sleight of hand at the front. What's going on at the back is the engine cover is coming off.
00:55:17So it's not a wing adjustment. The wing adjustment, we're getting around a wedge or whatever at the front, but the engine cover is off at the back as well.
00:55:25This is sleight of hand, smoke and mirrors at the front end.
00:55:41.
00:55:57.
00:56:02.
00:58:36And Sam Hancock here.
00:58:38We're riding on board 4th place in the GTE Pro Class with Olivier Platt in the Ford GT.
00:58:43We've just seen the number 8 Audi come in for what Audi's Twitter feed says.
00:58:48It's routine service, fuel and tyres.
00:58:50They neglect to mention it was pushed back in the garage, both ends of the body were taken off, stuff was done and it was pushed back out.
00:58:56So we're going to have to have a bit of a guesstimate as to what it was.
00:59:00Jeremy Shaw, what's the most extraordinary long shot?
00:59:02Triple stint.
00:59:03No.
00:59:06And triple stint there.
00:59:08Olivier Plies informally who will be starting.
00:59:10He's just gone under the pits a few laps ago.
00:59:12No idea what they would have been on the Audi quite frankly, but it did cost them about an extra two minutes by going back into the garage and back out again.
00:59:20But clearly they learned suddenly for a number 7 car because that stop was 4 minutes and 54 seconds.
00:59:26The stop for a number 8 car was only 3 minutes and 30.
00:59:29Generally speaking, when you change drivers and fuel and take on tyres as well, the stop's going to be just a little bit less than a minute and a half.
00:59:39But generally speaking, that doesn't involve a trip into the garage because you can do all that with the standard number of people.
00:59:45It might have been routine, but it certainly isn't something you planned for before the race meeting.
00:59:51No, and having then told the driver on the radio they had to stay out until they were ready to fix what they needed to fix, which was the same as...
