A US State Department spokesperson says Washington welcomes Taiwan President Lai Ching-te's commitment to regional peace in his National Day address last Friday. It also says Beijing shouldn't use the speech as a pretext for destabilizing action.

00:20grown considerably. It also said that Beijing should not use Lai's speech as a pretext for
00:26any action that destabilizes the Taiwan Strait. China has said that Taiwan independence activities
00:31are the greatest threat to regional peace. In his speech, Lai called on China to renounce the
00:37use of force in the strait. He also vowed to strengthen Taiwan's self-defense capabilities.
