00:00A big topic that comes up in most National Day speeches is Taiwan's relations with China
00:05and security in the Taiwan Strait.
00:07How do you think Lai's speech compares from this year to last year, which was his first
00:12National Day speech?
00:13I think Lai, bilaterally, he tried to be using more graceful language towards China.
00:20When he called on China to talk about assuming responsibility befitting of a great power,
00:26he's really calling on China to listen to the better angels of Beijing's nature.
00:31And the better angels that Lai still believes Beijing has.
00:34And when it comes to more multilateral terms, that's when he tries to be more deterrent-oriented,
00:40when he talks about first island chain, Taiwan position, and that regional countries have
00:46reason for building common cause to deter and dissuade Beijing from regional geopolitical
00:51expansionism.
00:52I think Lai this year is very specific about the defense strategy Taiwan's pursuing, specifically
00:58as a metric strategy.
01:00And he also talked about he's about to launch what he called Taiwan DOM, that is a strong
01:05anti-missile attack system, air defenses for Taiwan.
01:09He talked about building more collaboration with the defense sectors of other advanced nations
01:14who are most likely like-minded partners who share Taiwan's democratic values, so that together
01:19they can pursue a joint non-red supply chain, especially when it comes to defense sectors.
01:25Lai's been a big advocate of peace through strength, so with, like you said, boosting defense
01:30spending and this T-Dome air defense system, what do you think will be the international reaction
01:37to this, you know, with life-minded partners, but also with China?
01:41I think the international community is going to feel very encouraged, they're going to have
01:45more confidence in Taiwan's commitment to its own defense.
01:48Lai is pretty comprehensive.
01:51He talked about strengthening internal balance and external balance.
01:55Internal balance in terms of strengthening Taiwan's own domestic defense system as the
01:59increased spending.
02:01Also about external balance, that is, leveraging more friends, partners from abroad, so that
02:05they can lock themselves into a more sustainable, longer-term ecosystem of defense cooperation,
02:12thereby creating more path dependency that's going to sustain Taiwan's defensive commitments
02:18going forward.
02:19So international countries who are watching should be very emboldened by Taiwan's commitment
02:23to defense, judging from Lai's speech.
02:25Lai also talks a lot about social welfare policies and ways that he wants to help students, elderly
02:32people and just people in Taiwan and facing the daily challenges.
02:36So what do you think is the message that he's trying to send to the people of Taiwan?
02:41That while Taiwan enjoys great economic success and growth recently, a redistributed justice
02:47remains high on the agenda.
02:49That President Lai sees not only bigger pictures about international turmoil economic situation,
02:56he also cares about the story of the little guys and little girls in Taiwan.
03:01And that is why he talks so much about investing in Taiwan's elderly and Taiwan's youth as well.
03:08And this manifests an increased program for taking care of healthcare, as well as more education
03:14subsidy for Taiwan's younger students.

03:16Sent to you all.
03:17But it's a great question.
03:18You can have your question about high enough.
