President Lai Ching-te used his National Day speech to highlight Taiwan's plans to boost its defense capabilities, while calling on China to renounce its threat of force and coercion as a responsible major power.

00:00Taiwan is celebrating its national day with a big ceremony here in the middle of Taipei
00:05and a speech from its president Lai Qingde who had some words for China.

00:38He says they'll be using that budget to do things like speed up development of a so-called T-Dome
00:44which is an elaborate air defense system that can intercept aerial attacks
00:48as well as integrate AI into its combat systems

01:30The day also featured performances from dance groups, bands and Taiwan's military
01:39with nearly 200 foreign dignitaries in attendance
01:42as well as members of the public
01:44many of whom say they feel proud of their country
01:46and are excited to celebrate its birthday
