00:00Work hard, play hard, healthy body, healthy mind, face the future, fear no challenge.
00:10I strive to be the best that I can be.
00:16Work 2000, work hard 2000, play hard, be the best.
00:23Face the future, work hard, fear no challenge, be the best.
00:33Hi everybody, I'm Ryan Seacrest.
00:35And I'm Maria Sansom.
00:37Now for years you've been watching all the great games on American Gladiators.
00:40But to actually have the chance to play them yourself, you had to be a grown-up.
00:44Well, not anymore.
00:45Welcome to Gladiators 2000.
00:49All right, let's meet the blue team today.
00:51Weighing 128 pounds and standing 5 feet, 5 inches tall, is 13-year-old Mason Bonberg.
01:00And at 121 pounds, 5 feet, 6 inches tall, 12-year-old Leandra Jefferson.
01:09Coaching the blue team today are Nitro and Sky.
01:14And for the red team, at 5 feet, 5 inches, weighing 146 pounds, is 13-year-old Millie Bussey.
01:21Competing with Millie is 13-year-old, 5 feet, 4 inches, 141 pounds, Stephanie Florio.
01:27Coaching the red team today are Sabre and Ice.
01:33For the next half hour, you're going to see these outstanding young athletes facing off
01:40in some incredibly exciting tests of physical skill.
01:42But Gladiators 2000 isn't just a challenge for the body, it's also a challenge for the mind.
01:47Now after each event, the teams will be given a chance to up their scores by correctly answering a bonus question.
01:51Those questions will test our contenders' knowledge of physical fitness, health, the body, and good nutrition.
01:56All things we've been learning here at Gladiators 2000.
01:58All right, let's get started!
02:04Here it is, all 3, 2 feet of an intense vertical challenge, meet the wall.
02:09Our wall is divided into 5 different zones.
02:12Now we're going to set the clock to 90 seconds, and each contender will have to climb as high as they can, as fast as they can.
02:17They'll earn 5 points every time they get their entire body into a zone.
02:20And if someone gets to the top before time runs out, they'll earn 10 bonus points.
02:25All right, you've got Mason and Nitro on the blue team.
02:27And Billy and Sabre on the red team.
02:29Here we go, blue team ready, red team ready.
02:33Peggy steps up, 90 seconds, let's kick it!
02:36Their coach is giving them some last-minute tips right there.
02:39Each block, each colored block, with the exception of the first one near the green, is worth 5 points as you see Mason get into that area.
02:46It looks like Billy is ahead by just a little bit, but it is really neck-and-neck right now.
02:50Remember, the higher up you get on the wall, the tougher it gets as it begins to slant out.
02:54You see that slant right there, that little wedge?
02:56It sure is difficult.
02:57You're always looking for somewhere to put your hands.
03:01There is Mason placing his feet, looking up.
03:05And it looks like Billy is ahead right now by just a little bit, but remember, anything can happen.
03:09Did you see that?
03:09Mason, both feet came off the wall, used the upper body to pull himself back towards the wall.
03:14Great job.
03:15That just goes to show you that anything can happen.
03:17And he could have slipped off there, which would mean he'd have to go back to zero.
03:1945 seconds.
03:20Here comes Billy.
03:21He's got to grasp over the top.
03:22Billy is almost at the top.
03:23Pulling himself.
03:24It looks like...
03:25There he goes.
03:26He's over.
03:26And he's over.
03:27Great job.
03:28Meanwhile, Mason is fighting.
03:30He sees the top.
03:31He knows he is almost there, but he's got to place his feet and his hands strategically and get over the top.
03:37He will get five bonus points if he gets up and over before the clock runs out.
03:40Now he's just trying to find the next stone to put his hand into to try to pull himself over.
03:45The crowd chanting and cheering.
03:46Go, go, go.
03:47I'm getting excited.
03:48What's going to happen?
03:4915 seconds on the clock.
03:51We see his hand with the chalk.
03:52The aggressive pull.
03:54Here he goes.
03:54The eyes.
03:55Look at that.
03:56He's fighting.
03:56Pulling.
03:57Almost over.
03:57And there he goes.
03:58There he goes.
03:59And he wanted that.
04:00Seven seconds left.
04:01And he did it.
04:02Great time.
04:03Five bonus points there.
04:04Now let's go to Peggy, who's got the official results.
04:06Peggy?
04:07We've got Billy from the red team earning a score of 30 points.
04:11And Mason from the blue team earning 25.
04:14Great job.
04:15Was it as easy as you made it, love?
04:17Uh, no.
04:18It's harder than I expected.
04:19Did the crowd help you or did the crowd hurt you?
04:22No, they helped me a lot.
04:23Yeah, I like when people psych me up.
04:25It's fun.
04:26Okay, thanks a lot.
04:27We'll be back to see how Leandra and Stephanie do when they get to scale the wall.
04:31So don't go away.
04:33Hey, it's not like I want to be here, okay?
04:42Please, act like you can't see me.
04:46Thanks.
04:49Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey!
04:50I thought I told you not to look at me.
04:53Can't a kid get some privacy around here?
04:59My name's Ben.
05:01That's my problem.
05:02But let's not talk about it.
05:04Let's talk about how my parental units ditched me at this gladiator training camp.
05:10Let's talk about how these red, white, and blue meat monsters are polluting my brain with all this exercise stuff.
05:17Lift the weight, lift the weight, put it down, lift the weight, put it down, up, down, up, down.
05:26Can't these people make up their minds?
05:28All right, we've already seen our first two contenders race up the wall, but before the game continues, let's take a look at another part of gladiators.
05:47Let's talk about how many of you.
05:49Ready, set, go!
05:53Hold it right there!
05:54What's going on?
05:55That's what I want to know.
05:57Brushing your teeth isn't supposed to be a race.
05:59Do any of you really know the right way to brush?
06:01Sure, watch.
06:02Listen, the only way you're going to keep those teeth in your mouth and looking pretty is to clean it for at least two minutes.
06:16Too long.
06:17Oh, no, it's not.
06:19This is plaque, not the kind you hang on the wall, the kind that stains your teeth.
06:24This is tartar, not the sauce you put on your fish, the stuff that causes tooth decay and gum disease.
06:30So how do we get rid of it?
06:32You can't get rid of tartar.
06:34Only a dentist can chisel away the tartar you let grow.
06:38But a good toothbrush with soft, rounded bristles can remove plaque and prevent cavities, but only if you use it the right way.
06:46Start from the back of your mouth.
06:48Too many people worry about their smiles and forget about the hidden back teeth.
06:51When's the best time to brush?
06:53If you can, do it after every meal.
06:55The idea is to get rid of the plaque before it has time to set up shop on your teeth.
06:59But the most important time to brush is right before you go to sleep.
07:03Otherwise, a plaque has eight hours to settle in and start doing its dirty work.
07:07But remember, brushing is only half the story.
07:10You've got to clean the areas even a small brush can't reach, and that takes dental floss.
07:15Along with brushing, it can keep your teeth and gums intact and in your mouth.
07:20Remember, take care of your teeth, because if you ignore them, they'll go away.
07:25We are back for the second half of the wall.
07:31For the blue team, Leandra Jefferson being coached by Scott.
07:35Okay.
07:35When you get to the pink, just start going straight up the middle of it.
07:39Okay.
07:40And for the red team, Stephanie, coached by Ice.
07:44Exactly.
07:45So here, here, push up.
07:48Exactly.
07:48All right, 90 seconds on the clock, please.
07:50Round two for the wall.
07:51Peggy Odita starts the race.
07:55Up to a great start.
07:56Both getting up there.
07:57Remember, each colored zone is worth five points to get your entire body into it, with the exception of the green.
08:02And the first person over the top will get ten points, and the second person over will get five points.
08:06All right, you've got Stephanie fighting.
08:08Look at Leandra on the left, who's gone about a body length ahead as she fights into that third zone.
08:12She's just getting up there.
08:12She's finding all the stones and getting up there.
08:15If you look at Stephanie, she's having a little bit of trouble trying to find where to put her hands to be.
08:18The Andre is doing a swift job, if I ask you, swift.
08:22Oh, and she comes off the wall, hanging, hanging there, using her upper body strength to pull herself, regain that grab there.
08:29Great job.
08:29She's got those long legs.
08:30See those long legs?
08:31She catapults herself up, pushes herself up to the next stone.
08:34Almost.
08:34On the other hand.
08:35If she can get her body into the red zone, she'll get 20 points.
08:38And Stephanie approaching 15 points if she can get her whole body into that next zone.
08:43Here she goes, up to the top, 20 points there.
08:45Stephanie now.
08:45Stephanie has got the upper body strength that it takes.
08:48She can bench.
08:49You know what she can bench?
08:50200 pounds.
08:51And Leandra is pulling herself.
08:53There she goes.
08:53And she's over.
08:53The top, 28 seconds, over the top, 28 seconds to spare.
08:58She stands up there and says, ha, ha, ha.
09:01And Stephanie now has got, she's got plenty of time left.
09:0420 seconds on the clock.
09:05She needs to keep going and at least try and get up to another colored zone for five more points.
09:09Meanwhile, at the bottom, Ice cheering on Stephanie.
09:11Now, the blue team was hoping to win this race because the red team got off the wall first last time.
09:16That's right.
09:16They need this to catch up.
09:17Five seconds left.
09:18Four, three, two.
09:20She's deciding.
09:21Can't decide.
09:22One.
09:23And that's it.
09:24Oh, great job.
09:25Great effort.
09:25Now, let's go to Peggy Odita for the official results.
09:29Leandra earns 30 points for the blue team.
09:32And Stephanie earns 15 points for the red team.
09:34And now, let's go over to Maria for a bonus question.
09:37Our contenders have finished their first physical challenge.
09:40Now, it's time for their mental challenge.
09:42The subject they'll be quizzed on is brushing your teeth.
09:44Since the blue team won our first event, they get to choose which question they want to answer.
09:48Which one will be question A or question B?
09:52A.
09:53Okay, question A.
09:53If you get this right, it'll be 25 points to your score.
09:56What is the minimum length of time most dentists recommend you spend brushing your teeth?
10:00Two minutes.
10:01That's correct.
10:0225 points for you guys.
10:04Great job.
10:06Red team, again, if you get this question right, 25 points will go to you.
10:11Here's your question.
10:12Good luck.
10:14If you can only brush once a day, when is the best time to do it?
10:18Before you go to bed.
10:20That's right.
10:2025 points to you.
10:22Great job to both teams.
10:24And let's go to Ryan.
10:26Oh, man.
10:27Oh, man.
10:27It's going to be sweet.
10:28It's swing shot.
10:29It's the bungee cord.
10:29You know, you bounce back and forth and back and forth.
10:32Also a chance for the teams to score more points.
10:34It's coming up next on Gladiators 2000.
10:36Stick with us.
10:38Ever wonder why we have two ears?
10:40Listen up and I'll tell you.
10:41Sound usually hits one ear a fraction of a second before it hits the other.
10:45By calculating the difference from the time each ear hears the sound,
10:49the brain can pinpoint where the sound came from.
10:52I bet you it came from over there.
10:54Told you.
10:55Peace.
10:59We're back for the second half of Gladiators 2000,
11:02where the blue team has a 10-point edge over the red team, 80-70.
11:06These two teams are playing for more than just pride, though.
11:09They're also playing for some great prizes for themselves and their schools.
11:12But before we can give away any prizes,
11:15I want you to meet a very unique member of the Gladiator 2000 team.
11:19Take it away, lab man.
11:20Oh, hi.
11:21My name's Rudy, the mad scientist of Gladiators 2000.
11:25And today I'm here to talk to you about muscles,
11:27what they are, how they work, and why we need them.
11:30Now the body has three different kinds of muscles.
11:32When you flex your fingers or twist your wrist,
11:34you're using muscles attached directly to your bones.
11:37Guess what?
11:38They're called skeletal muscles.
11:40Now the muscles in your stomach, intestines, blood vessels, skin, eyes,
11:43and other organs are smooth muscles.
11:45Cardiac muscles are found in your heart.
11:48And when these muscles contract and relax, your heart beats.
11:51To help me illustrate this, I've talked nitro into helping me out.
11:54Tendons attach muscles to the bone,
11:56and these muscles cover your entire skeleton.
11:58Skeletal muscles are also called voluntary muscles
12:01because you can control their movement.
12:03Or in this case, I control them.
12:06Now would you please bend your elbow.
12:08Now most skeletal muscles work in pairs.
12:10This helps you move.
12:12Muscles in the front of the arm contract to raise the forearm.
12:15Then the lower your forearm,
12:16from the muscles on the back of the upper arm contract.
12:18Let's see how flexible Mr. Gladiator really is.
12:22Put your head inside this box.
12:23Be very careful.
12:25Perfect.
12:26Now skeletal muscles, smooth muscles, and cardiac muscles
12:29each have different jobs.
12:30But they all contract,
12:32which means to tighten up and relax.
12:36Now this contracting and relaxing causes movement, like so.
12:45Perfect.
12:46We'll try it again.
12:51Contracting and relaxing.
12:54Let's give nitro a big hand.
12:55Give him a nice big hand.
12:56See you next time on Gladiators 2000.
13:00Well, the game is called Swingshot.
13:04You know what that rhymes with?
13:06Sorry, I can't help you.
13:07It's slingshot.
13:08And that's exactly what it feels like
13:09to ride these giant bungee cords up and down
13:12from the high platform to the pole covered in balls.
13:14Each of these balls represents
13:16one of the three important nutrients we need
13:17in our daily diet.
13:19Carbohydrates, proteins, and fat.
13:20The blues, our carbohydrates, and sense carbs
13:22are our most important sources of energy.
13:24They're worth five points every time a team grabs one
13:27and brings it back to their Gladiator coach.
13:29Proteins are red and are worth three points,
13:31and fats, which we shouldn't eat too much of,
13:33are yellow balls and worth only one point.
13:35Okie doke.
13:3560 seconds on the clock, please.
13:37And here we go.
13:39Let's do it.
13:40Okay, we got the red team in place and ready.
13:43On the other side, the blue team is ready.
13:45Now 60 seconds on the clock, and we're off.
13:47It's Swingshot.
13:49There they go.
13:50There they go.
13:51Two balls right there.
13:52Two cover hydrates.
13:54Ten points total for Mason.
13:56That's right.
13:56You're coming down.
13:57You're pushing up.
13:58Look at Leandra pushing up.
13:59And she just got one, but she hit somebody.
14:00Look.
14:01Bodies everywhere.
14:02Did you see that?
14:03They hit each other.
14:04It's tough to control yourself on these bungee cords.
14:06You're going down, and then shoots you right off.
14:09Billy on the red team having a little trouble getting out.
14:11Same thing with Stephanie.
14:12Stephanie trying to fight through the tower.
14:13Look at Ice holding onto her.
14:14Pulling her in.
14:15Great job there.
14:1630 seconds now.
14:17Halfway through the event.
14:18Mason, he gets a red ball.
14:20Leandra knocks down a fat and gets one.
14:22One point right there.
14:24Now Stephanie grabs the red in her hand and puts the yellow in her mouth.
14:28You can see Ice helping her out there.
14:29Did you see?
14:29She sure did.
14:31A fat right there in her mouth.
14:32That's difficult to do.
14:33It's hard enough trying to grab those.
14:34Billy right there missed.
14:35Now sometimes you do strike out.
14:37You go down and you strike out.
14:38We're down to five seconds almost on the clock.
14:41Ticking down.
14:41These guys are rolling.
14:43Jumping bunches.
14:44Two seconds left.
14:45Two, one.
14:45Look at that.
14:46Didn't get the fat.
14:47Time is up.
14:49Now let's go to Peggy for the official score.
14:51The blue team earns 46 points, and the red team earns 21.
14:56It's time for a bonus question.
14:59Big deal.
15:00Come on over here.
15:01The category is muscular facts, okay?
15:05Now blue team, since you guys won right here, you get to go first.
15:08And if you get the question correct, choose A or B.
15:11It's worth 25 bonus points, okay?
15:13What's it going to be, A or B?
15:14A.
15:15Question A.
15:15Here we go.
15:16The question.
15:17What organ is made of cardiac muscle?
15:22Five seconds.
15:23Oh, the heart.
15:23There you go.
15:2425 points for the blue team.
15:26Good job.
15:27All right, red team.
15:28You guys ready?
15:29Your question.
15:31Where would you find smooth muscles?
15:34Your eyes.
15:35That's right.
15:3625 bonus points for the red team.
15:38Congratulations.
15:38Great job.
15:39Maria.
15:41At the end of two events, the score is 151 to 116.
15:45But in just a few minutes, that can all change.
15:47Because up next, we've got our final event, the Eliminator.
15:50You won't want to miss it, so stay with us.
15:53What is waterproof?
15:55Blocks out and destroys harmful bacteria, regulates body temperature,
15:59and constantly communicates with the brain.
16:02Do you know?
16:02It's the skin, which is also the largest of all human organs.
16:05In just one square inch of this miracle substance, there are 19 million cells, 625 sweat glands,
16:1490 oil glands, 19 feet of blood vessels, 19,000 sensory cells, and over 20 million microscopic
16:21animals.
16:22Gee, no wonder I itch a lot.
16:30We're back for the final exciting challenge.
16:32It's the Eliminator.
16:33And that's exactly what's going to happen here when one team is eliminated and a champ is crowned.
16:38That's right.
16:38Now, Maria and I snuck in here a few nights ago and checked this Eliminator course out
16:42to see how tough it really is.
16:43Look at this.
16:45The Eliminator starts with a climb up the ladder.
16:48Next, a giant slide to a row of hanging rings and our first question board.
16:52To add 25 points to your score, choose the correct answer by selecting one of our treacherous
16:56rolling logs.
16:58Next, a razor-sharp high-speed turn and a jump down takes you to the question room for our
17:02second question.
17:04A wrong answer here means a locked door and lost time.
17:06But get it right.
17:08Earn 25 points and move on to quickly tag your partner.
17:11Contender number two has to climb over a row of hurdles on their way to question number
17:15three.
17:15Choosing an answer here means climbing the correct rope over our glass wall and then racing up
17:20the moving treadmill.
17:21It'll take skill and balance to get to the top where the final question board awaits our
17:25contender.
17:26Answer this question by picking one of the two swinging ropes and it's hang-on time for a ride
17:31through the barrier to the finish line.
17:32The team with the fastest time will receive a bonus of 50 points, which should determine
17:37who wins today's super cool prize package.
17:40So now it's time for the Eliminators!
17:45Since the Red Team is behind, they'll face the Eliminator first.
17:49Billy will start the relay race and Stephanie will pick up in the middle for the final push
17:53to the finish line.
17:54All right, let's do it.
17:55Red Team is ready.
17:56Saber is ready.
17:57Let's go.
17:58All right, that's the signal.
18:02Billy Bussey for the Red Team takes on the beginning of the Eliminator as he scales that
18:06ladder to the top, looking down.
18:08Look at this line.
18:08Hey, how about that?
18:10There's Billy, the karate student, grabbing onto the rings and using his upper body strength.
18:16See Stephanie cheering him on.
18:18Billy really knows what he's doing there.
18:20Great job on the rings.
18:23Now he's going to come up to bonus question number one.
18:25Which muscles work in pairs, skeletal muscles or smooth muscles?
18:29Skeletal muscles, and that's the right answer.
