Researchers have found that Matai'an Creek Barrier Lake in Hualien is now only 1.7% of its water volume compared to when it overflowed in late September. Teams are monitoring for dam erosion, so they can warn downstream residents. The area remains on red alert.

00:05since it overflowed late last month.
00:08The team found that the Matai-an Creek Barrier Lake has largely been filled with mud and
00:13silt and now only contains about 1.5 million tons of water.
00:18That's only 1.7 percent compared to when it breached and flooded Guangfu Township in
00:22September.
00:24The team is still closely monitoring the lake and watching for signs of dam erosion to provide
00:28early warning to nearby residents.
00:43The area remains under a red alert after 19 people were killed in the flooding.
